Texas has the most books banned of any state (438), with Florida in second at 357. (Source: PEN America) PEN America’s Index of School Book Bans identified 2,532 books banned from July 2021 to June 2022 alone. pen.org/report/banned-usa-growing-movement-to-censor-books-in-schools/

But they are only banned in public schools and some libraries’ children sections. That’s not really banned. It’s restricted access. And considering adults were not allowed to quote the contents of these books at school board meetings because they were so inappropriate, that is probably a good thing. Not to mention I’m pretty sure some of those banned titles included pornographic straight materials as well.

This kind of censorship confuses me. If the books are inappropriate for the intended audience, then of course they shouldn't be as available, but this is often not the case. As you address in the video, these types of books can help to resonate with people who have similar struggles, but also, they shouldn't be banned because banning books takes away the intellectual freedoms of potential readers. As people with rights, we should be allowed to form our own ideas and opinions, heavy control of the media limits this because people can't explore other ideas or see other perspectives beyond their own. Even if someone isn't lgbtq, is it so bad that by reading the book, they can understand a different perspective?

It's so unnerving that this is real, Utah Gov. signed a law to ban books under the guise of protecting students from "sensitive material". Materials will have to be "legally disposed" of and some physically destroyed. It was mentioned that there was literal joking of book burning and this to me is so concerning. They force teachers to duct tape over their bookshelves, and the teachers were instructed to lie to their students and tell them they were taking inventory. I was lucky enough to have a teacher who risked their job to tell us the truth about it. We are living in a world run by 80 year old straight white men. We need a change.

As I stated in another comment. Schools should be just a careful about what books they give students access to as what movies they show. The problem is there isn’t a rating system for books like with movies and they don’t require parent approval to check out books (and I don’t think they should require it) so I think is perfectly reasonable for them to limit what books are in school libraries. If parent want to give their child a book that the school can’t provide that up to the parents, just like they can show their child movies that the school can’t. Parent have a right to know what their children are being exposed to.

Of the ones who aren’t, half of them can drive to bookstores. You aren’t keeping the books from us, you’re just making them harder to access for most people. If these kids are old enough to drive, they should be old enough to read about sex. Half of them have been doing it for a couple years anyway. Also, the internet exists. Think about what’s on it. Also, if you’re going to give the argument my mother gave when I came out, that “we shouldn’t be labeling ourselves this young”, I don’t think you understand why I’m labeling myself. I do it so that I can try to figure out who I am. It isn’t permanent, I can in fact change it and have done so several times. Sorry about the rant, I do that a lot.

I wish that you would stop with the blatant propaganda. The "ban" was for explicit sexual content like in "Genderqueer" or "This Book is Gay". Playboy is banned in school libraries, and this is exactly like that, and for the same reasons. You do you as an adult with other consenting adults, but involving minors is not ok when it comes to sexual content.

But it also banned children's books like "And Tango Makes Three", which is a book about real male penguin mates adopting a baby penguins. It also bans books about puberty, which are natural processes of the human body that children go through and aren't always told about. It has explicitly been a way for the mere existence of LGBT+ people to be considered inherently explicit, especially since parental complaints about books don't need to be from the same school districts the books are held in.

@@time-mars let’s be clear, these books aren’t “banned” they just aren’t in the school library, if parents want to let their kid read one of these books they can get it for them or go to the public library. They are basically leaving the choice up to the parents which is the best option in my opinion. Schools should be just as careful when giving students access to books as they are with movies, but there isn’t a rating system for books like there is for movies. Parents have a right to know what teachers are showing their children and what schools are giving their children access to.

@claudeyaz Please tell me what books were in libraries for middle schoolers that were "sexual"? Nearly all the books being banned for younger kids are just for LGBTQ+ content they deem 'sexual for existing or age appropriate sex education on puberty, bodies etc. I think there was one incident in one library where Genderqueer was shelved for middle schoolers (probably because a lot of people assume graphic novels or comics are "for kids") which it shouldn't be but that doesn't mean we need statewide book bans on hundreds of books including completely non sexual books that depict same sex weddings or transgender people.
