It is set in 1995, in a Boy Scouts summer camp, and tells the story of Aiden, who is bullied for his appearance, including acting in a manner considered stereotypical of gay men. Curato was a scout and based his experience as a closeted teenager to write the novel. The book was published in 2020 by Henry Holt and Company and was praised both for its emotional story and its artistic choices, such as the use of red tones for emotional moments while being mostly drawn in black and white. No matter what your opinion is a teenager in high school should be old enough to read those types of books if they so wish. I read the book and researched it. The book he is talking about is called Flamer. Theres a lot of miscontext that the dad put. For one that’s not a “kids” book it’s a graphic novel made for teens 14 and up. That book is not showing up in elementary schools or middles schools but is appearing in high school. With the little context shown it seems bad but it’s really not, especially when you compare this to priests forcing their kids to attend “Bible study” to read a book that talks about much more controversial things like, murder, rape, slavery, etc. all Flamer is about is the life of a gay teen who grows up in a catholic household and goes to public school.

Unfortunately, this is another example of parents completely missing the point of what books are meant to be. The book is Flamer by Mike Curato. It's about the struggles of a young gay boy as he navigates boy scouts and bullies. Interestingly it also explores his upbringing in the catholic church, which naturally leads to the suppression of his identity. Anyone surprised this is the book being banned? Should there be an age restriction? Yes. Does it have the potential to be important in the lives and journeys of many kids? Yes. Should it, then, be outright banned in a futile attempt to protect kids from profanity? Nope, and struggling with the profane nature of pubescent boys a major theme, which clearly went over these parents' heads.

It's obviously idiotic for the board to censure his language while he's reading text from a book available in the school library. But the context in the book is that it's about a gay 14 year old sharing his experiences of what it was like to grow up being gay in high school. Those quotes are from peers mocking him because of his sexuality. The point of the book is to teach acceptance based on sexuality and for the author to share what he went through while he was in school to help prevent that from happening to others. This is not pornographic material and if you think 14 year olds and even younger kids don't speak like this and mock those who are different in very similar or much worse ways than what's depicted there, then you are hopelessly out of touch with either your own children or youth in general. This is being paraded around and posted on social media as if it's evidence children are reading pornography in schools, which is laughable and completely ignores the context of the material. If you actually want to have a discussion of school reading materials, don't base your views on reactionary Tik Tok videos and at least do the bare minimum of looking into the context of the book you're talking about
