@computerwizard39083 жыл бұрын
How big do they get
@diveinnature29903 жыл бұрын
@@computerwizard3908 mine is still young it’s carapace is only about 10-11” long and it weighs about 3 lbs as of about 2 months ago. From what I’ve read they can weigh up to almost 40 Ibs when fully mature at around 20 years. Mine is an estimate of 6 years old.
@LonghornInOmaha3 жыл бұрын
@@computerwizard3908 Ours is about 21 years old and easily over 20" long. Luckily, it's a male and they don't get a big as the females. But, he's still a very large turtle. He lives in a 4'x8'x30" 600 gallon tank and I wouldn't keep one an anything smaller as an adult.
@dugangant3 жыл бұрын
Where are you guys purchasing them from? I would like to get one but can never find any place that sells them. And I know they are poached and are illegally sold but don't want one that way.
@diveinnature29903 жыл бұрын
@@dugangant unfortunately unless you are in direct contact with the the original person who either bred or imported its hard to know for sure the nature of how it got to the states. In my case I bought it from a guy who inherited the turtle from his deceased father who bought it to put in a display tank at a salon in Miami. The son kept fish but didn’t have time to take good care of it so he posted an ad on offer up of all places and me and my dad split the price and got it as a Father’s Day gift for ourselves. So I don’t know to put it shortly but luckily mine now enjoys a 1200 gallon pond all for itself instead of the 200 gal it was in and sharing with several large aggressive fish with its previous owner

Where I work, we have huge Fly River turtles. They're omnivorous but a diet higher in green stuff is recommended for adults. Fruits! They love sweet fruits like peach, mango, etc but not too much as sugar can fatten them up to the point of obesity.

I’ve kept turtles for many many years, including Flynose. If you need anything answered let me know. But basically they’re easy as to keep only with a few things to look out for as I’m sure you are aware. I’m in U.K. where all turtle sales now have been banned from stores / breeders due to our ponds / streams having them being dumped in.

Just a warning. I had a pair of large rare turtles here in Thailand and after over a year the male got stuck in some decoration. He went in and couldn't back out and drowned. I thought he'd escaped until the water started to smell. You have potential death traps in your tank. Good luck.
