After 3 Months with NO BATH, we finally found a SOLUTION!

After what seems like an eternity, after we thought we exhausted all options, we tried one last attempt at getting Mikko in a bath tub. Her texture sensitivities have heightened and it's been really tough to do basic things that she used to do with no problems. As always, we continue to help our little one the best way we can as we journey through autism!

For our little guy, it was the sound of the loud water that bothered him. We started filling it up when he wasn't in the room at that helped. We also added bubbles and that made it fun as well. Proud of you and your girl!

THIS is what I was wondering. The filling of the tub is loud even through the video. I think (i could be mistaken) I’ve always seen them filling the tub with her around or in the room. I’d almost try to fill it and either try bubbles, or water change color change tablets. Also, if it’s the bathroom, the tub, that is frightening…some kids might not see a small kiddie pool as frightening since the toys etc are associated w fun. I’d even try that.

This reminds me of a breakthrough I had with a 3 year old student of mine who has sensory sensitivities. It’s cold here in Chicago but we still try and play on the playground if its not too cold. My student came to school in a pajama top, so when we were suiting up to go outside I told her she had to put a sweater on before her coat. She hates when the fabrics bunch up under her sleeves so she started to melt down as usual. This time, I had extra time so I sat with her a moment, then I said I know a trick to make it feel nice and smooth. We can try it, and if you don’t like it, we can take it off. But I can’t let you go outside without your sweater. (I can’t leave her inside alone so in the past when she refused to put on the sweater I had to take her outside with just a t shirt and coat on ) She was really brave and she tried it, and for the first time she went outside with proper insulation! We didn’t get the gloves on, but one win is enough hahah
@inactiveluka

what did you do to make it smooth?

omg that reminded me I HATED and still do when the fabrics get scruched up. I just suffered in silence until I got my coat off.

Poor thing....I cant imagine how overwhelming it would be to have such big feelings about something but not be able to articulate what was causing that feeling. That has to be incredibly difficult not just for Mikko but for the 2 of you as well.

When my autistic son was 4 and afraid of the tub we eventually figured out it was from a book we had read where a toy went down the drain. We promised him we wouldn’t pull the plug until he was out of the tub and then he was ok.

This just brought tears to my eyes and I know how tough this is from experience. We moved into a new house and it took 3 weeks for my son to get comfortable enough to walk into the bathroom. He will only bathe in our tub. If we visit family he will not walk into the bathroom, so we have to do wash downs...I pray her baths gets easier for not only her, but you and dad!!!

Commenting for the answer to HVA. All I could find online were studies referencing higher levels of homovanillic acid (HVA) in the urine of those with ASD. I’m wondering if it’s just a little typo and she meant HFA, as in high-functioning autism? 🤷🏻

I've heard from some autistic people that it's the transition from dry to wet. It could be the echo of the bathroom because of tiles and hard surfaces. I hope you and your kiddos get through this challenge swiftly💚

This has me crying tears of joy for you. I noticed that Mikko seems nervous around RUNNING WATER or DUMPING WATER. Is it the sound it makes? Maybe a light ear plug could help, but then that could be another sensory issue to get over. Either way, I'm so proud!

This little girl has touched my heart in such a way. Ive been quietly watching and its amazing to see her reach milestones ❤. In reference to the tub, maybe she doesn't like running water. Or the splash it makes or the sound. Glad she was brave enough to try the tub. Maybe it doesn't feel as huge as the regular tub. I feel so sad whenever i hear her cry. She's such a little sweetie.

I’m so happy for you guys. Thank you for the update. My son is still struggling too. It’s been about 3 months for him too since he started the same exact thing as Mikko. Thank you very much for linking the inflttable tub, cause I was just about to ask. I was able for maybe one minute to get my son in to tub the other day . I put no water in it, and his bath toys but with a dry towel to cover the whole tub floor for maybe the texture comfort, I did it to just get him comfortable with the tub itself again. I’m hoping if I keep practicing maybe one day it will help. I’ve been thinking about trying the inflatable tub too just how you did outside of the tub and bathroom, hoping that it might work for my son as well. Thank you so much Precious for your channel. It brings me comfort as a mom of one, with who he is 4 with level 2 non verbal autism as well.
