Our Toyota GR Yaris first arrived 3 years ago and we really enjoyed having it around. Recently we’ve had it tweaked by Litchfield and it now kicks out 320bhp and heaps of torque.
But how does it compare to the new GR Yaris, my son Charlie went to the press launch and reveals all here..

And there we have the solution: Harry gen1 should keep the Yaris gen1, and Harry gen2 should buy the Yaris gen2. Compare again in three years (the cars, not the Harrys).

I bought one with the same mindset but after 2,5 years I just can’t keep it anymore for this purpose. It’s a car for speeds between 30-70 mph. Under 30 its suspension is harsh and engine under 3k rpm is laggy and gutless. Above 70 mph the road noise on everything but quiet asphalt is deafening (81db on our highway). So if you live in the Cotswolds like Harry where there is no traffic of highways it’s perfect. But otherwise it gets on your nerves real quickly. Greets from Belgium!

A couple of months ago I didn't own a GR Yaris. However, after seeing the price rise and a couple of changes I didn't like - like the dash - I went ahead and bought a Rallye here in Australia, which fortunately is like a combination of the Circuit and Comfort/Convenience pack in the UK. This review only reinforces to me that I made the right decision for me. I'll be going down the same route you have - a tweak to the suspension and a tune and that's it and I'll be happy with that. I do wonder where all the other GR's are because I know its limited run production but I've seen so few on the roads. I wonder if there are lots under covers in garages. Anyway, apart from me dropping an adventure bike on it and denting the bumper, it's not needed any remedial work of any kind. I don't fancy my chances much of getting my hands on a Gen 2 though. Thanks for this insight that really confirms what I've been thinking. If you have a Gen1, keep it & enjoy it, not worth going for the Gen 2. But, if you were not lucky to get a Gen 1, go for the Gen 2 ! Furthermore, I'll really have to think about that Litchfield Stage 1 tune. Looks like the sweet spot for B-road fun due to that extra torque. Suspensionwise, what is the stiffness of your new springs ? "Track pack" OEM springs are 37N/mm. I've been thinking for the past three years I've had the car that the "issue" wasn't the spring rate, but rather how the damping has been calibrated. I've been looking around different AM suspension providers, but haven't found any maker keeping approximately the same spring rates (soft & stiff enough for B-road fun taking into consideration the inevitable degradation of our French roads) and really improving the damping behaviour (except for BOS - who have provided suspensions for the WRC Yaris - but they really have a problem with after sales service for us private clients...), so still waiting to come across a maker that is able to provide an upgraded damping at a reasonable price range.

i had the previous model some years ago it looked inside like a high-end luxury/sport car ,i used to race with powerfull sport cars and always left them behind , after maybe 7 monthes i couldn´t look at it ,so i sold it for 50.000€ and in two days , i waited 6 monthes for it to arrive and in second hand was the regular price asked, new cost me with all extras 43.000€(manual gearbox, automatic doesn´t even make sense), this new look Yaris, maybe a great car also ,toyota is a trusted brand i also bought two hilux trucks with doble cabin to my work as a agricultor and it surprised me for the best ,incredible how good they are . The previous model was very good also so when buying this new ones i thought they would be worst but no just perfect in the most dificult terrain, they already made 2.000kms in the worst roads or ways in the countryside and it drives good in all, maybe i´ll keep them for more 5 years ,they have already 2 years. The Yaris when i bought it ,it was like buying a toy ,i had no need for it but bought it anyway and old porshes and ferraris couldn´t catch up this inside the city circuit at late in the night or early in the morning when the cops are drinking whiskey in a BP gasoline station that sells a bit of everything so inside the city no cop of trafic at those hours, i remenber passing through my old highschool in the center of the city at 2 in the morning and looked down for a second and was driving it at 190 km/hour and behind me a carrera from 96 and a mondial that i don´t know the year , the circuit we made is filled with turns and some straight sections of road but no more than 500 meters or half a km, inside the city we live and were born , this friends i have met them when i was 4 years old in kindergarden

But if your phone is connected and you press map, the map comes up. And yes that is with the circuit pack.

Circuit Pack only got red calipers, no changes in hardware between specs. All of them got the same brakes

Great reporting lads! Has really confirmed I have zero interest in one. So much more interesting stuff out there for that money. These are about as interesting as washing machines

Your original video back in 2021 made me purchase my own GR Yaris. I love the car but I ordered in 2021 and it arrived two months ago (1000+ days wait time). Anyone looking to purchase a new one has to consider Toyota and their shady delivery practices. They practically made us wait 3 years for no reason.

Brakes are the same on all three models ! It's mainly wheels, springs and LSD on the circuit, convenience has loads of additional tech features, HUD, Sat Nav, Parking Sensors, Blind Spot Monitor, JBL.

So many mods! Stunning pocket rocket of a Toyota - yours and the new model. You two are great co-hosts and Charlie comes with so much technical detail. Strong partnership. Who handles the camera when Charlie is in front? Mom? If so, nice videography,

With sadness I sold mine on after 36k miles and loved it on and off track. Another great video although don’t quite get the challenge with tyres. The Michelin’s were phased out hence supply challenge so I fitted Conti Sport Contact 7s which I found to be at least as good, if not better.

Great video as always guys! I’d love to hear about how this car performs on track. Specifically around the mods too, as it’s something I think a lot of people consider with these

I think a revvy MX-5 will give you similar smiles per mile, but with the added benefit of a convertible roof, RWD and a much, much lower on-road price.

I was wonder what Harry had done with the GR. Been on same journey and timeline with mine and still love it. Nor going to be changing for the new one. For what ever the improvements made , the lift in purchase price is disproportionately higher for the new car.

I sold my Litchfield Yaris because Toyota announced the mark 2. Scarcity aspect dented by their decision to evolve it IMO. Wonderful cars though!

Didn't imagine that Toyota can improve on perfection but they did with small subtle changes that make one big change for the better on gen2 Yaris GR. Thanks Toyota for still making proper hot hatches ❤❤❤ Great video keep up with great work 👍👍💪💪😊😊

18:00 Hang on, so have they completely removed the auto stop start from the mk2 (auto and manual), or just the ability to disable it? If it’s gone completely that’s a major win!!

Great Review, with the Steadying hand of Charlie. You would hsve gone for the NEW one with Track Mode and all the extras, I know. ! But you have already got most of the Mods you like ! Let the Newcomers go for the "latest gizmos" ! There are ALWAYS more mods you could do to it. ! More of the Duo Combo please. ! Stu xx

On the rally thing, there are a number of one-make rally championships out there for the GR Yaris, and I believe they are quite widely used for rallying in Japan in lightly modified form.
