Brexit has me worried sick. I get the 'we don't mean you' all the time, too. I have my settled status now, but that was a complete nightmare and caused lots of stress to get (app did not work on my phone, had to send my passport off as well as some other paperwork and then had to wait for weeks for an answer), and you get no evidence of said status. Eventhough the government has said nothing will change for EU citizens living in the UK, it also said that EU citizens were 'automatically granted status' when you had to apply for it, it wasn't given automatically. Brits get what they deserve. Denmark, Austria, Norway, Switzerland etc. have tighter controls when it comes to "foreigners" and expanded integration programmes, despite being either in the EU, or very closely aligned with it (a "soft" Brexit deal arrangement), yet people don't care and would rather blame the EU for a choice the British government made themselves. Now, they're going to be kicking out culturally more aligned, well educated, EU-citizens and make up for it with "qualified" people from Africa and Asia. I do not have any problems with anyone making a new life in a new country and doing it by their own sweat. I lived in Germany for 10 years , I was an engineer and had 3 factories under my control, I had all nations on my work roll, we were a very mixed bunch. The only real problems I ever had was with the local German guys - who all wanted to be foremen or charge-hands. The most reliable workers were the Polish , you give em a job and it will be done - end of! Yes, I agree, not all Poles are the same, but you tell me of any group of people that are all angels, because I don't know of one. And don't, for heavens sake, tell me the Brits would do a better job coz that's why the Poles are here because the Brits couldn't or didn't want to!

We’ve never seen eye-to-eye with EU politics either. We rejected the single currency, for example... I think we need to make it simple for EU nationals currently living here to apply for, and be accepted for, UK citizenship, if that’s what they want. I know it’s a time of uncertainty for many people. We need to take that on board and make sure that everyone who considers Britain to currently be their home know that they are valuable, worthwhile and accepted members of our country...

Immigrants from the EU tend to integrate very well (note the lack of Hungarian, French or Polish slums on the outskirts of big UK cities). It's an absolute nonsense to suggest that there's a significant anti-polish sentiment in the UK or that when people voted for Brexit (for immigration concerns) it was the Polish they had in mind.
@onahilltopsatthemoon5 жыл бұрын
I'd like to believe that but your last paragraph was not exactly what I've seen and remember.
@CBfrmcardiff5 жыл бұрын
Well, I do remember seeing graffiti in Trowbridge in 2015, "Poles go Home!" It was hidden away in an alley and it may even have been ironic. On the other hand it may have reflected a sentiment that too many Poles and others (because of their numbers, I think Poles are sort of symbolic of the 2004+ wave of immigration) were coming in to the country. The thing is that I would seriously suggest - please don't scoff before considering the idea - that being against a social phenomenon such as immigration, or even a prominent subset of immigration, is not the same as hating the immigrants themselves. We will never know what was going through the mind of the teenager who put that graffiti on the wall, but he (I'm sure it was a "he"), if he was at all serious, may still nevertheless have opposed the idea of throwing out or harassing or hating the existing Polish population. It's not the zero sum game that the Guardian seems to want us to imagine, where you either oppose all immigration control, or you're a racist who wants to deport everybody. One of the ladies on here says that since the vote people 'openly' talk about their opposition to immigration. That is of course her subjective experience, the value of which is telling us how she feels and not how people behave, but it is interesting for 2 additional reasons. First of all, the very idea that people had ever been obliged to keep as a secret their opposition to a particular level of immigration is itself troubling. They must have lived in fear. But secondly, I've come across people complaining about immigration for *years* (less so recently), including fairly recent immigrants themselves. It's no recent phenomena. I imagine that people often take their cue from their environment: come to Britain and work in a 'working class' environment and you'll soon complain about immigration, just as your colleagues do. Come to Britain and work at the Guardian, on the other hand, and you'll soon shudder in horror at the idea of a UKIP voter.
@philippgebhardt22725 жыл бұрын
@@CBfrmcardiff True - The Guardian also treats immigrants as these isolated, atomic individuals without cultural norms/customs The social impact immigrants have on society should be at the front of our minds when discussing immigration - but this is completely absent from the discourse and we only talk about how it will affect the GDP.

I am English and live in France. I care little for the EU and voted for Brexit. Compared to other EU countries, the fact that the UK has more than 5 million EU nationals living there is a testament to the dynamic and welcoming society that the UK has. If you think that the UK is a terrible place to be post Brexit - why not come an move over here……. go on try it, then you will realise why so few Brits actually LIVE and WORK in the - it is bloody difficult.

@pat dunne : You are barking up the wrong tree Pat! I am an engineer and speak the language, but I have no rosy view of living here in France forever..... indeed, I will return to the U.K. when my children leave the nest and I have discharged my responsibilities accordingly. The Maastricht Treaty in the early 1990’s was clear that the movement of people within the EU was to Live and Work. You are indeed right that it is hard for most U.K. citizens to find work in the rest of the EU without a proficient use of the local language. That is also why the U.K. has more EU citizens working within its Territory than all other EU migrant movements put together. France for example has a total of 300K EU citizens working and/or living in France, the U.K. has over 5M!!!!! So, unless you have experienced first hand living in the U.K. and living in another EU state, I’d recommend that you button up.
