The fact that she can't just dump him is probably the most realistic and frustrating part of this movie. It's like watching your friend go back to the same clown again and again and again and eventually you can't even yell at them to dump him because they've morphed into a clown too with how many times they've gotten back together. I want to meet someone irl who has ever rooted for this couple to be together. This movie feels like a PSA for abusive relationships, not some romance.

The copious amounts of drinking Hardin does just makes me so uncomfortable. An alcoholic family member went completely manic in a drunken state, no matter how much we helped them it just wasnt enough. I’ve had to call the cops on them and I feared for my family’s safety. It isn’t romantic, it will never be romantic. You can’t help someone who doesn’t want to be helped.

If someone published all of MY trauma and sold it and didn't even change my name, that relationship is over for good and if I could afford it, a good lawsuit would be sent their way. Like, Tessa is also interested in English... she could've written about her OWN trauma. Hardin literally steals everything from Tessa: a college experience, sanity, self-worth, AND NOW HER OWN STORY. Don't know how anyone likes Hardin. Also - the way they recast everyone has me cackling hysterically. Bring back Dylan Sprouse's character please. I don't care what you have to pay him.

It was such a missed opportunity story wise to have Hardin write the book instead of Tessa. Like imagine: they’re separated, she writes the book as a way to process everything that’s happened to her. She decides to publish it and the book blows up. Hardin sees that she wrote a book and decides to read it and sees EXACTLY how shitty of a person he’s been. Like it’s laid out there plainly for him to see. It would have made more sense for her to write the book and the fact that it wasn’t is such a disservice.

Tell me you don't understand the human body without telling me you don't understand the human body. It's random! I can never forgive the author for setting up Tessa with Hardin who doesn't have sympathy and empathy for her at all, and she dared write Trevor out of the story completely by this point. Bruh, the fact that this story STILL screams "White TEENAGE GIRL'S Wattpad Harry Styles fanfic" when the author's been an adult for a while is Astounding. There's been Little to NO Growth in the writing of this series. TO BE FAIR, Stephanie Meyer, E.L. James & the chick who wrote 365 Days kept the same level of Mess or got Worse. So I can't really say that the After series author is unique either.

It blows my mind that Ned was apparently the head of HR at the Try Guys company and thought he could get away with that bullshit. Like the fact that he capitalized on his public marriage throughout his career on the internet and then publicly cheated with someone who was a lower level employee in his own company (where his own wife works as well) is just major yikes and a huge HR violation. I like how Tessa didnt have a good relationship with her dad, she eventually meets up with him again, he wants to be in her life, turns out he's homeless and a drunk, and then he dies and she took all of that better than Hardin just finding out that his dad isnt who he thought he was, which, yeah, is still rough, and you're validated in your sadness and anger, but I just love how Tessa's family turmoil is so glossed over, to focus on Hardin's boring storyline that proves to have no development when we are 4 movies in! Tessa could get her head cut off and Hardin would just be over in the corner crying into a bottle because he got a paper cut.

Cause, like discussed in the first video in the comments, the story is about Tessa, but it's actually about Him. The next movie has to have a twist. Harden is just an unreliable narrator of the whole series and currently in prison bc he was stalking and harassing tessa after the first time they broke up. The next movie shows a court hearing where tessa testifies the years of stalking and how she feared for her live and we get flash backs from her perspective showing a whole different story. Hardens books are ofc crap and will not be published so he uploads them to Wattpad from the prison library. His therapist thought that writing would help him but she reads the shit on wattpad and decides that he is still a danger to society bc he doesn’t acknowledge reality and still his obsessed with tessa.

Dude, the worst part of this movie specifically is that shows that Tessa has literally lost everything since meeting Hardin, like she was at a good college, she had a good relationship with her mother, she has already been at peace with her father out of the picture, and had a quite good job/internship thing, but she ended trying to put back the pieces of her life, and he still haunts her and writes about the worst and most hurtful parts of her life, WITHOUT EVEN CHANGING HER NAME, like, dude, you have literally broken this girl life and put such a burden into her shoulders with the whole "fixing" shit, and you cannot keep her life at peace, like wtf. And he ends up a super popular writer and at peace with his parents, yet she ends up trying to move on? And, to add insult to injury, there will be a fifth movie in wich they'll end together and I think they have kids, because there was this rumor about a movie ABOUT THE KIDS. Like, omg, this really needs to stop like NOW, and the fact that there's people still romanticizing it blows my mind. With that being said, Kennie could make anything funny and worth the watch, so I'll have to keep coming back to this anyway lol

Testify! The only thing I disagree with is Tessa's relationship with her mom. From what I've seen, that relationship is just as toxic as Tessa's relationship with Hardin. In the first movie, her mother knew nothing about her relationship, so it can't be said she was trying to protect Tessa from abuse because she didn't even know at the time that was going to happen. Even if she had, cutting her off financially for not listening to her STILL would've been inexcusable since it only drove her further into Hardin's web. In the second movie, she got worse by getting mad at Tessa for rightfully being upset at her for not letting her father contact her and once again denigrated her relationship with Hardin--again, not because she was concerned for her daughter's well-being, but because she was angry at her for not living her life exactly the way she wanted her to. In short, poor Tessa simply went from one toxic control freak to another.

The abusive relationship I was in years ago had this language in it, taking a problem I had and extending it to the abusive partner. I had anxiety and, no joke, the guy I was with said, "How are we ever gonna have kids if this (my anxiety) happens every time (ie: when he wanted the horizontal tango, and my body freaked out because he'd done it against my consent before)?" I know it's just a movie, but Tessa? Run as fast as your legs can take you!

I’m going to applaud this movie for showing one thing: it shows how narcissistic partners use and abuse their victims for for their personal gain, and when they are done with you, they dump you out on the street and move on, without any thought of you. He used the tactic of being aware and remorseful of his abusive behaviour to constantly drag her back into the relationship. Narcissists often use this approach. They’ll preach about how they know they are awful, and how toxic they are to their partners, that they are not deserving of the love their partners give them because they are unloveable. They don’t say this because they love you, or want to change, they say it to control you. Then the partner thinks “Oh, he knows he is a terrible person, I should give him a chance. My love can save him”. They stay in the relationship, and the cycle continues. After he has gotten what he wanted from her, ie. using her trauma and his abusive behaviour during their relationship to write a best-selling book, he is no longer chasing after her. He’s now gonna be rich from her trauma that he massively contributed to. And now she is left to pick up the broken pieces. Just as he used her to win a bet in the first movie, now he used her to write a novel👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

This seems to be a thing with narcissists and similar types like Ned. People aren't individuals to them, and these people only matter in relation to them. Outside of whatever the relationship is (family, romantic, friends, etc) they don't matter. Take note of some of the more controlling or narcissistic types and how they usually refer to the people close to them (plus how often they do it, bc it's not weird to call someone your partner, but if that's the only way you talk about them and it's constant, beware)

But a few things; in the book the bet was to take Tessa's virginity and he showed the bloody sheets and used condom to his friends. In AWC we find out that he played these games back in London, there was a girl named Natalie who slept with Hardin and he recorded it without her consent or knowledge, then it went viral, Natalie lost her scholarship and her parents kicked her out of their home, when she went to Hardin for help he basically slammed the door into her face, he never felt bad about it until he imagined Tessa in that position (sick in the head much?) In AWF when Tessa is trying to find an apartment in Seattle, Hardin answers her phone when the estate agent calls her back and he makes up awful stories about Tessa being an unreliable person and that she was kicked out from several places because she didn't pay and trashed the apartments. And when they have sex in the hot tub he accuses her of seducing him and trying to get pregnant (he forgot about protection) so that he'd go to Seattle with her. There's also a part when Tessa was drugged and sexually assaulted, and Hardin's biggest concern about the whole situation was that he is the only one who can touch her, she's his, no one else's. In AEH when she tells him she can't get pregnant, he makes it about himself and gets mad at Tessa for taking the opportunity away of him of being a father and of course there is the whole writing a book about their relationship and publishing it without her consent. What I find the most concerning is not this Series exists and is so toxic; not that Hardin did all this over the movies and still got Tessa to want him; not that Hardin wrote down all this shit down as a way to have thearpy and sold it as a book *AGAINST* Tessa's consent, but the most concerning thing to me is that there are going to be gurlies that look at this toxic mess and think and say: "I wish I had a Hardin. I wish I was Tessa". And I do know that for most of them this is wish fufillment, *BUT* there is a nugget of truth in that these girls will see these toxic traits in their future romantic/sexual partners and not pull the plug, but INSTEAD continue those relationships. That's what I find so damning about these movies. Is that there are young people who subconsicously wish this on themeselves and THEY NEED HELP. Because girl that was me.

I think that's the problem with books/movies like these. It's fine to show and discuss toxic relationships, but it's not okay to romanticize them. Like there are books/movies about this topic that will never ever make you feel like "yup that's what I want". And then there's After...

This is the first After movie that finally gives a close enough depiction of how toxic "Hardin" was in the Wattpad series (he was still worst on Wattpad). None of the other films in the series do this terrible character justice. I feel the same amount of confusion and anger as I did nearly 10 years ago. Finally.

No joke, I read the first book before the first movie came out and, just for funsies, I pulled up a list of signs that a partner is emotionally abusive cuz I wanted to see if Hardin was as bad as people were saying. He literally checked ALL OF THEM. So I pulled up another list from a different website. He checked all of those too. 💀 That's when I knew we as a society were never going to know peace again.

I'd go more for BPD if I'm being honest. His attachment issues, mood swings, paranoia that everyone's his enemy and fits of uncontrollable rage tick most of the boxes on that list.

The little story about being alone definitely resonated with me. Back in uni, I went out with a friend and met with his friends (two of whom I'd only met once before, the rest I didn't know) and he left me, I had to tipsily get back to my dorm and I was FURIOUS at him

Imagine basically torturing a girl for months (because I don’t think it’s been years in universe) and being either the cause or proximate cause of a lot of her pain since you’ve met (I’m not saying Tessa and other factors didn’t contribute but Hardin was the biggest one for sure). Then finally going on a healing journey after she dumps your ass, moves to the other side of the country, starts a new school, and gives up the internship of a lifetime to be away from you. Just for you to write a book about the trauma you inflicted or caused in her life without telling her and for that book to become wildly successful. And you have to never to say not everything is about her?! Hardin can literally choke. This movie should’ve just been the end no to be continued just over and done.
