Right, imagine they didn’t know about the books at first and broke up with him beforehand then later finding their personal lives and trauma plastered everywhere, their full names and everything. So they both meet each other and talked about their horrible experiences and realize they don’t want another girl to go through this. Then they expose his lies, sue the crap out of him and ruin his life entirely. I would read that

girl if you think what he did to Natalie in the movie was bad... the book is so horrendous I can't even explain. My jaw dropped when you said Natalie's name and it brought back so much trauma In the book, Hardin and his friends in England had running bets on how fast they could take girl's virginity. There were MULTIPLE girls him and his friends did this to, where they pretended to be into them, fucked them, and left. But one of Hardin's friends said he wanted evidence because they didn't know if their friends were telling the truth about the girls, so they all started recording themselves having sex with girls. None of them asked for permission Natalie was the only girl Hardin recorded, but she did not know about the video being taken, and when it got out things were so much worse for her than the movie. Not only did she lose her scholarship, her parents kicked her out, and because she was around 17, she had nowhere to go. So she went to Hardin and asked him to let her stay AND HE SAID NO Hardin knew he was the reason Natalie lost her scholarship and her home, he knew Natalie had fallen in love with him and that he was the only one she had left, AND HE LEFT HER ON THE STREETS Don't even start with this series, it's worthy of a death sentence Edit: I completely forgot about this but it's so nasty I have to add it on. Natalie was the only girl he recorded when he played this gross game in England, but after he came to the US after his mom found out about the Natalie thing, but he did this to his friend Dan's sister. Dan told him to leave his sister alone, but Hardin still slept with her and recorded it just to piss Dan off for telling him not to talk to his sister. And when Tessa judged him for it, he said 'It's fine, he's a dick anyway.' He didn't even view this girl as a person, he just uses her to hurt other people

The central theme of "Only fix yourself for a woman who deserves it" is one of the most harmful messages that men can consume in modern media. Women can get unalived for rejecting a men who has become obsessed with her and redeeming themselves THROUGH her after all they've done to people. It's a selfish message that reduces women to objects who are soley responsible for men's redemption. Hardin doesn't want to be good for himself, because what does he get out of it, if not Tessa? She's just another cope, just like his drinking.

Hearing this after all the devil stories crossposted from subreddits like Off My Chest and Confession of guys admitting to taking advantage of homeless women and coercing their exes into sex but because they made a big show of talking about how disgusted they were about themselves about it but not how apologetic they are, people just treated what happened to those women as a learning experience that those dudes grew from, yeah. Tessa ended up with the Devil Incarnate of a partner and the fact that he got zero accountability up till the end makes me wish to high heaven the author never gets kids, especially sons. People can call escapism all they want but I think certain writing just unveils the author's personality rather than the characters if you ask me.

something that really bothers me about those movies is that everytime SA is mentioned it's never about the victim. the whole situation that happened with hardin's mom, while, yes, he would absolutely be traumatized by witnessing something like that, it's never adressed how this would affect her; she just goes "i'm over it, you should be too". and now with natalie, it's the exact same thing; she's also magically over something so deeply traumatizing like that and hardin is the only one who is still dreading it and SHE is the one to tell HIM that he should be over it. except this time it's even worse because he is the abuser in the situation. it feels like they are trying reaaally hard to paint him as this super great guy and be like "look how caring and worried he is. even the victims don't care anymore and he still does:((((("

Honestly like sir, feeling bad is the bare minimum. If everyone felt bad about shit they did n could move on, we wouldn't need prison. I mean it's sad that the author utilizes the trauma of women to gather sympathy for the male mc who by all accounts (except his mum) is the cause of those trauma. I swear, the author was way too young to publish this with a matured conscience, but I mostly blame the adults for letting this happen. We've all made some cringe worthy media at least once in our lives, but to have it popularized to this extent as 'After', I wonder if the author ever looked back to realize the problematic undertones of her works

for anyone who was also confused as fuck as to why tessa, the protagonist of the last 4 movies, was barely there: josephine langford, who plays tessa, didn't want to come back for the 5th movie because she felt that the story was over and there was nothing more to add. then the studios said "eh fuck it" and greenlit the 5th one, using footage of the wedding and them as parents that was actually filmed as the ending to the 4th one. i guess this is kind of based off of "before", which is the prequel book? never read it, so i can't say for certain, but yeah that's why nothing makes sense and there's a shit ton of flashbacks 😭

I don't think she knows what an artistic muse is. I was at the movie theatre after watching a movie with my mom around a month ago and while I was waiting for my mom to go to the bathroom, I saw an ad or poster of sorts in the hall for this movie and I thought to myself "What if I take a picture of this and post it on twitter and @ Kendall" but then I decided eehhh she probably already has people hounding her I probably don't need to. I'm surprised to find out no-one did. Well at least you now know the thought was there. Never stop thinking about the holy dog mother, queen of squishmallows, punisher of rats and bad movie connoisseur with a verbose vocabulary that also makes music sometimes!!:)

The 'I'm giving a speech about something super important to some other people, but it's also secretly a message to my love interest, so the speech is really about ME! ME! ME!' reminds me so much of Meredith telling the guests to Cristina's wedding that the wedding isn't happening - while also signalling to Derek that their relationship is "so over" - and I hate it. It's so disrespectful. Go have your moment somewhere else some other time.

I have such an issue with every single "After" bc i feel like so many impressionable kids/teens love the toxicity. They will mimic the hot n cold tendencies. Also in a weird way i feel like this story represents a lot of white men, bailing him out everytime he commits atrocities and he gets forgiven after doing the most cruel things..... I've legit heard so many men like "why wont you forgive me?" despite doing 0 inner work and these movies just bolster that idea.....so exhausting

Dude the way I was soooo disgusted when they let us know what he did to Natalie like WHAT? This asshole did that crappy bet not only once but TWICE? Like wtf, how is this stuff still being made and this character gets a happy ending? He should've been beaten up right after the first movie fr, no waaaaay they tried to make people eat up this "redemption" arc when he should've been burning in hell a long time ago. Thank god it's over.

As a LOVER of Redemption Arcs, I just…wow. Its the most lazy, unseasoned, uneventful, bland “redemption” arc ever written, probably. Its just…what? Nothing happened in terms of events; nothing happened in terms of personal conflict…why is it even made, then? The whole video I looked at Kennie’s beautiful makeup and hair, and also, how one’s is able to sit through the shit without Kennie commenting on it? Like, its not even boring, its mind-numbingly empty of any substance.

there's something really funny about writing a self insert fanfiction about you and a celebrity and write them as so awful that you break up constantly. like, the author, who must love harry styles to write fanfic about him, wrote him as a character that she breaks up with multiple times? does she actually secretly hate harry styles? also poor harry styles, i hope he hasnt seen any of these movies.

To quote past Kennie, “I’m no lawyer, I’m just a girl with common sense” but a slightly better movie instead would be Tessa taking this man to court on a privacy lawsuit, cause how the hell is he gonna write a book based on her private life and things only he knew, not change her name in the book, make profit, and not expect his ass to be sued???

There is something to be said about male artists who use women to fuel their art and call them their muse despite it being to their detriment. It reminds me of an art piece, also called ThecMuse's revenge iirc where it shows a man laid past out surrounded by his paintings of a woman in his mansion while said woman -- his muse -- is about to shoot him.

Harden is a pathetic character for many reasons but my biggest upset is the normalization of man babies and the I can fix him mentality & all the feminism leaves my body when women like men like this cause I do not feel bad when reality hits them.

i will say, as someone who was in an abusive relationship, the abuser will often gaslight their victim and make them question their perception of reality, so the victim will think they’re overreacting or even making things up. my ex convinced me *i* was the one hurting *him* by trying to set boundaries. it wasn’t that i didn’t see a problem, it’s that i was made to believe it was my own fault. the only thing that got me out of there was lots of therapy.

What do you mean by ’reality hitting them’, to be clear? Because abusers prey on vulnerable, lonely people, shower them with affection and make them dependent on them, first. Is the first SA the moment when reality hits them, or is it when they realise they were sa’d and otherwise abused, which happens much later for those who survive?
@alanaadornato5596
@alanaadornato5596 8 ай бұрын
I'm sorry? Are you saying that you do not feel bad when reality hits women who like these men? If so, that's a horrible thing to say! If people knew that they are going to be victims of something horrible like SA and abusive relationships, do you think that they would want to be victims? Most victims don't even know that they're being abused because they're manipulated into thinking that this is normal and that they deserve this; which they clearly do not deserve this, nobody does! Pieces of media such as this film series manipulates women into thinking this ok as well so please don't tell me that you're going to punish the women who like these men and not even begin to address how horrible this side of society (aka the patriarchy) is. I would love for you to rephrase yourself because I do not want to be rude but, how can you call yourself a feminism if you're going to shame women for falling prey to these abusive behaviors and the attempts to continue to normalize them?

Seldom have I seen a character as unredeemable as Hardin. In the books he's even worse, especially when it comes to Natalie. The message of this all is so awful: he can go around, abuse people and treat everyone like shit, only to be forgiven cause he had a hard life too, and then finally steals Tessa's dreams. As I remember, she was always the one into books and publishing and now she's the perfect housewife while Hardin's got to be a freaking bestselling author??? Besides, of course her infertility that costs Hardin oh so much pain and trouble had to magically vanish, because it's no happy end if they don't have kids

I've never engaged w/ these movies, the books or the og fanfic outside of bmaab. I have no emotional investment in the story whatsoever, & yet still I'm infuriated. Like, a genre of romance that, for all its problems, is about centering the desires of young women - culminating in a film series that ultimately doesn't give a shit about what the female lead wants, feels or does is depressing af. At least the twilight series stays focused on *why* bella wants edward, & what *she* gets out of their relationship! After doesn't give a shit about tessa, & I'm really scared of how that reflects the current trends in romance aimed at girls/women (both published & fanfic). To me it seems we're so caught up in the drama of forbidden/"toxic" relationships & "flawed" love interests, that the actual core of the genre - female power fantasy/self-actualization manifested thru romance - is being disregarded. I dunno maybe I'm overreacting, but it pisses me off that the most popular het romances of the last 10ish years seem to think endless manpain inherently makes a story more "complex" & engaging than just, letting their female leads WANT things & work to obtain them.
