Interestingly enough, Romeo and Juliet is always the first Shakespeare story we talk about when entering Highschool. I agree trying to remove the aspect of death cheapens the impact for sure, but at the same time the leads entire attraction comes off as hollow looking back on it. If you want to remove death, at least have an equal or just as impactful consequence that doesn’t undermine the intended message.

I love seeing Romeo and Juliet retellings that have the main pair be a little more sane, and a little less "our infatuation has a body count!" "lovestruck". Also... "No parties forever, LEAVE or cut this feuding out" is pretty extreme.

Imagine what if Spike was the friar, giving a kind of parody to his motivation to change the story. The friar wanted to use the marriage as a chance to end the feud, so Spike having that role would make sense with him using the position to change the story, thus leading to a different but still disastrous consequence. It doesn't even have to be death, just something unfortunate.

If you want another explanation for why tragedies appeal to us, this one lyric from Hadestown sums it up pretty well. It’s a musical retelling of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. At the end of the play, the narrator Hermes addresses the audience and says this, “To know how it ends, and still begin to sing it again. As if it might turn out this time. I learned that from a friend of mine”. Basically, a well made tragedy can appeal to our desire to hope. Even if we know going in it will end badly, there is a small part of you that wants you to believe that it’ll be alright. You think, but maybe if I read it or watch it, the ending will be different. You don’t feel cheated at all by the sad ending, because you knew it was coming. But it does still hurt because you allowed yourself to hope for what could’ve been. Tragedies also serve other purposes, like as serving as a cautionary tales, where you see a character you may or may not relate to cause their own demise or despair through their own actions and choices. Season 5 of the Dragon Prince did this really well with the shows main villain Lord Viren, where he’s forced to confront how his pride and drive for power not only eroded all of his goodness away, but has torn his family apart and cause his beloved daughter to walk down that same path.

I read Romeo and Julliet in high school English class and later we were asked to write a paper over whose fault it was this tragedy was allowed to happen and I blamed it all on Romeo (It felt too easy to blame the feuding family). After, I wanted to learn why it was written like that and why people still call it the greatest love story, despite the lead's love coming off as teenage crush turned rushing into downward spiral. Part of the reason why I read so many adaptations and reimagining of classic tales is seeing what they can do and address for the leads so they're more likeable and their love stories (if there are any) can actually work, because there's only so many times, I can see what was written on the page play out before I start tuning out the movie.

not going to lie I wish it was actually a discord and fluttershy story. think about it discord was seen as a villain and the embodiment of chaos fluttershy is a pegasus that can age and die but is the element of kindness herself. already the odds were against them yet they somehow became friends. so instead of doing romeo and juliet use the concept of star crossed lovers but have it be discord meets fluttershy and she could be the only pony to not be afraid of him. have some villains like Chrysalis or Tirek try to turn discord to their side by saying no one will ever care about a monster like him. but fluttershy's kindness melts discords cold heart and he gains friends and uses his magic to protect her. a concept that has been done before but it could be made interesting. sorry I do love pinkie and cheese, but I do wish to see more fluttercord content.

Cheese Sandwich: "And now that life is only sorrow and anger, we're going to get the cruelest revenge possible!" Cheese and Pinkie, together: "We're becoming lawyers!" All present from both families: "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" Cheese and Pinkie... after a moment of horrified silence, are suddenly rolling on the floor, laughing. Pinkie: "I told you they'd freak out!" Cheese: "The looks on their faces!" Both families at that point were dumbfounded, watching Pinkie and Cheese laugh at them. It was a stunned silence that turned to anger and frustration, until two words were exchanged, from one leader to another: Twilight: "Friendship beating?" Starlight: "Friendship beating!" Twilight and Starlight, together: "Get 'em now!" And thus, everyone lived happily ever after... once the wacky couple recovered from their mandatory friendship meeting and had a proper wedding.

Also, this comic is kind of stupid, but also funny and endearing, in the best sort of way. Then again, I DO have a soft spot for Romeo and Juliet rewrites that remove the stupid infatuation and let people survive, instead of being a tragic fling with a body count. EDIT: I like The Perfect Pair as a Romeo and Juliet retelling because Bright Mac and Pear Butter are actually sane and don't get people killed. EDIT2: This one is more meant to be silly, relaxed, and fun. So very much against the "infatuation is stupid and grow up it's not love" feel of Romeo and Juliet... Is it obvious I'm one of those people who has "no heart" because I don't gush over Romeo and Juliet?

I guess it’s not so much about depicting the real world literally, but instead having enough to echo reality so that fiction becomes relatable.
@Gemini_Hero11 ай бұрын
4:14 Thank you for addressing this! It always bothers me whenever it gets said that fiction "should mirror real life as close as possible" or some such. I think it comes from a fundamental misunderstanding of what the foundation of traditional fiction is. In real life, characters enter and leave the plot with no reason, story elements are introduced constantly with no payoff or purpose, the majority of chapters are uneventful and, often, payoffs and tragedies feel random and spontaneous. That is to say, real life is terribly written; if you just wrote real life without some kind of greater artistic purpose, you've probably written bad fiction. This is because the foundation of good fiction is that it provides us the ultimate illusion; a world based primarily on cause and effect, and one that can be followed by the audience at that. That's part of why so many fictional stories can have good outcomes for the characters; all the story needs to do is draw a series of logical conclusions from start to finish that leads us to our happy end. As you said, when you can follow the thread of why things turn out the way they do, the good ending feels earned and satisfying. On the flipside, you can do the same thing with a tragedy. Greek Tragedies are famous for characters who bring about their own ruin, following that same logical thread from start to finish. In this way, tragedy can also feel "earned", and even serve as something of a cautionary tale about how we can be our own worst enemies under the wrong circumstances. And sure, there's plenty of fiction (a lot of Junji Ito's horror) based around the cosmic and how arbitrary humans are in the grand scheme, but even that has a logical base in some way. The purpose of the story is to evoke that existential fear in the audience, so the events of the story follow that theme. How unsatisfying would it be if, at the very end of Uzumaki, a scientist spends 2 pages explaining exactly how the phenomenon happened and then the story ends with them fixing it? tl;dr, real life is very arbitrary, and fiction is the enemy of the arbitrary. It's composed of worlds crafted by authors who get to control events, to provoke thought and elicit feelings in their audience. I think a lot of people mistake the emotional cores and issues of these stories being rooted in real life, with the stories literally being *written* like real life.

Somehow, it was everything I expected, nothing I expected and everything I could want and nothing I wanted all at once. Plus, this isn't my first time with an MLP product adapting a tragic IRL event into something far more family-friendly (Doctor Whooves Adventures Episode 3 and World Party 1)... and both revolving around parties? If I had a nickel for every time an MLP adaptation turned a tragic event into something to do with simply finding out who can host the better party, I'd have 2 nickels. Read the comic shortly after watching your stream editing this video. My thoughts on it were that it kinda felt like a parody of the fix fic, where Spike is in the role of the fan trying to fix a story by forcing his own view of how things should have gone. I honestly didn't feel much else from it, those few times I've seen any version of the actual play, the whole thing always felt more like Shakespeare was making fun of this whole love at first sight theme. But that's just me, I'm not an overly romantic guy and just don't buy it for a second there is any real romance between Romeo and Juliet, just two teenagers acting more on impulses than any real feeling.

Romeo and Juliet is not my favorite story. I did several Shakespeare shows when I was younger, and there are many far better tragedies (King Lear) and love stories (Merchant of Venice and As You Like It). In fact, what I was told by my director is that R&J doesn't even technically count as a tragedy, and would fit better in the comedy category, because of how avoidable the whole scenario was. That being said, I have found that I like adaptations, parodies, etc, much better. They tend to make changes to the original characters or story that actually lend itself to being a better story. Perfect Pear is one of those. I'd like to eventually get into the IDW comics, but I will say that from your description, I like the idea of Pinkie and Cheese just going bland and their respective houses caring more about them than fighting. That part sounds like a good way to "ponify" the story

Yeah, that art style is a little jarring. I saw more than a few instances of the proportions being more humanoid. Specifically the shoulders being brought up higher on the body and shaving away the withers area. It's always a gamble to remove the teeth from something. I often think of the Abominable Snow Mobster of the North from the Rudolph special. It's not until his teeth are literally removed and he's humbled by Yukon, that he's willing to turn over a new leaf and be reformed. We see this as a win because of his savage nature throughout the first 2/3rds of the movie. Or we have two good examples from MLP itself; Discord and Starlight Glimmer. Both of them were too strong to have their, figurative, teeth removed. They had to be met on some kind of equal ground and persuaded to see/try things a different way. They are still able to relapse and mess up from time-to-time which gets us more invested in their journey. Though, also with MLP, there's the risk of over conversion. Too many villains coming to the good side. Inversely, if we see an evil character get rewritten into a hero we tend to bulk at that. Scenarios like Maleficent, feel forced because we're being told that the pre-established perspective is wrong and we should just accept the new. Disney in general has received criticism for doing this to classic fairy tales.
