This Rashomon-style double-header was so cool because of the dual perspective. I love the added details during the Boxer Rebellion portion. Plus the foursome powerwalking amidst the chaos like bosses never gets old.

I dont know why people say darla was "explored much better" on Angel. not because i disagree, i love darla on angel and bringing her back was one of the best decisions the show ever made, but the wording implies that darla on buffy was a character with missed potential for being explored when she really wasnt. At most she was a plot device to further the arcs of other characters and, while entertaining, was very one dimensional herself and it wasnt until angel that she became anything more than that.

I always loved Angelus meeting the Master. It demonstrates how bold Angelus was as well, to talk back to the vampire king, insult him. Angelus even laughs as he's getting beat up.

Yeah that was season 1 episode Angel where Angel tells Darla last time I saw you was Kimnios he was talking about the Boxer rebellion where Spike killed his first Slayer Xing Rong on June 18th 1900 and Angel left Darla afterwards the Buffy Episode takes place in April 1997 so 90 years later they see each other again although Kimonos are Japanse clothing not Chinese

Xing Brothers tried to take revenge for there sisters death but where killed by Spike in the 1933 worlds Fair in Chicago. Xing brothers damaged Drusllia so bad that she didnt recover for 10 years.untill 1943. Xing Sword was also blessed with Buddist priests which is why the scar on Spike eye brow never healed.

Drusilla is her real name. Last name Keeble was revealed in the official canon comic books that Joss produces. The actress playing her chose the name. As for Darla, Joss hadn't revealed it yet. But he probably will. I mean, we even know the Masters name.

Aaron Chand I’m feeling the urge to go into full dork pedantic nerd mode. 😜 The year 1900 is technically the last year of the 19th Century and not the first year of the 20th. The year numbering comes from the Julian calendar which predates European knowledge of the number zero. So they started counting the years from 1. If the year 100 belonged to the 2nd century then the first “century” would only have 99 years and wouldn’t be a complete century. Of course in modern times we normally write the years in Hindu-Arabic numerals rather than Roman numerals. So instead of an intuitive sense of completion when the last year comes, we get a sense of beginning like when the zeros roll over on the odometer. I normally wouldn’t go into detail about the calendar like this. I thought I made my peace with it when most people celebrated the millennium a year early. As most people choose to take the last year as the first year of the following century it has become a de facto convention. So feel free to ignore my rambling. (I fear I’m suffering from explaining withdrawal since I decided to stop trying to explain basic math and science to flat Earthers in KZbin comments. They can get pretty hostile and I really don’t need that kind of abuse.)

I think people were just trying to get you to have the full experience by watching the Buffy episode and this episode back to back because that's how it aired originally on The WB.

I think these episodes were written to be viewed in this order and the biggest pieces of evidence are Darla's line about "the first drooling idiot to come along", and Angel's demeanour at the time he finds out about Spike killing a Slayer. We obviously know that Darla's comment is about Spike. By this point he had been called an idiot, among other things, numerous times by Buffy, and we of course know who Dru chose for her sire, so his presence in the scene isn't even really necessary for us to know who she's talking about. It isn't until you see Fool for Love, however, that you find out that William really was a bit of a Sensitive Victorian Guy whose scary nicknames are actually the result of his awful poetry and not any notorious deeds. Watching Darla>Fool for Love reveals who William ran into and is a spoiler for his pre-vamp identity as a SVAG (Sensitive Victorian Age Guy). Angel's scenes have a similar effect. Angel's behaviour when Spike killed the Slayer in Fool for Love can be dismissed as him having a soul during the Boxer Rebellion, which is something the audience is expected to know after nearly 7 seasons of the Buffyverse. We KNOW he has a soul and we therefore know he's pretending to be evil. His attitude makes sense without any further information. What we DON'T know in Fool for Love is that Darla also knows he has a soul and is SUSPECTING that he's just pretending to be evil. Watching Darla first spoils reveals in both episodes. The only 'spoiler' in Fool for Love is something you should know before even seeing the episode.

Being a fan of this show since i was a little kid and i'm now 26, after so many viewings and years of watching it can depress you when all you have is just old episodes to re live over and over but now in this day and age with the internet we get awesome people like you who do reactions and you get to re live the episodes as if they were new episodes due to your excitement and and expressions and reactions. I love how you paused for a very long time on the part where Spike bumps into the three of them by chance and you realise who it was! yeah that was my reaction too. Hard to believe that Spike was once that clumsy, pathetically vulnerable kind of man. That was a really clever way of showing the character's first appearance. Obviously, Drusilla chose him because she saw his potential. I also love that scene because it reveals the relationship between Darla, Angelus, and Dru (and her calling Darla as grandma based on the order of who's been sired, thus revealing Angelus as her 'daddy'. Another scene that I love which is the iconic one with all four of them in one shot where Spike hops off of that box or whatever it is... and I just remember seeing that scene for the first time on Buffy flashbacks thinking Spike was the most dangerous one of all... but then after seeing this episode, you find out that this is where Angel got his soul and only Darla knew! It took until Buffy season 2 for Spike to find out that Angel had a soul and turned good! I'm curious as to what else went on with these four... like how did they all split apart with Darla in Sunnydale back with the Master and Spike and Dru in another place... how did they not know that from that point on when they were celebrating Spike's victory of his first slayer kill that Angel was no longer on their side? I guess Darla was afraid that the other two might do something to him and she didn't want things to end badly. Anyway, thanks for reacting to this ep! It just gets better from here. But I also love this episode for the way Darla gets so broken. There's so much more to her. She's the kind of villain/antagonist that you can sympathize with. I also wonder too what her real name was. Same with Drusilla. I wonder why their history is not nearly as clear as Angel's and Spike's. Probably 'cause in Buffy they weren't given much attention. It's good that we get more of that in Angel.

We get a decent amount of Dru’s history but it’s released here and there. Angel tells Buffy how he tortured and eventually turned Dru the day she was to take her Holy Vows and become a nun in Buffy 2-7 Lie to Me. And there is a scene where human Dru goes to confession, not realizing Angelus has killed the priest, and he first meets her. It might be in Becomming, but I’m not sure. So she always had her psychic powers.

i liked the memory episodes the most because their vampire team chemistry. Angelus was some type mass murdering artist. Darla was high born queen elite type person who not like humans or cracy wacko ones at all she despite them. Spike was driven some extreme acts that got everyone attention not been steahtly at all, fighting slayers,vampire hunters,large groups like that.

Yep, exactly - I remember when I was watching the episode I remembered the scene in The Vampire Lestat - and it takes place in the 18th century, too (I remember how Lestat describes himself as a dandy in 18th century clothes). Also, it's not that far-fetched - in Buffy versus Dracula she mentions a couple of vamps pretending they're Lestat. I don't know why, though - the book came out in the 80s and Interview with the Vampire movie back in the 90s. Though you could say that The Vampire Lestat was the last good vampire chronicles book Anne Rice wrote, so there's that.

The only info about Drusilla being her real name comes from a comic that's, at best, dubious canon (and probably not canon). I don't believe that was her real name. I can't see a super-religious Christian family giving their daughter an ancient Roman name. And the fact that one of the historical people named Drusilla was Julia Drusilla, Caligula's sister rumored to have had an incestuous relationship with him, makes it exactly the kind of name vampire Dru and her sires, Angelus and Darla, would pick for her.

Glad you watched 'Fool For Love' first so you could see the full impact the episode had. Its hard to remember when the name Angelus started as I have grown so use to just saying it when Angel has no soul. Perhaps this video will remind me it was this episode that it officially started. Sorry. Don't think it ever says anywhere what Darla's or Drusilla's original human names were. That would be a question for Joss Whedon himself.

No, they used "Angelus" interchangeably with "Angel" during the first two seasons of Buffy. Then they started the habit of using "Angelus" exclusively for soulless Angel and "Angel" for souled Angel - in the episode Enemies, late in season 3 of Buffy. But it's much more of a thing on AtS.

Darla's name, as has been stated, is never revealed. There isn't a definitive answer on Drusilla, though. The name was originally picked by Whedon to conjure up the Drusilla in ancient Rome who was the emperor Caligula's sister (and probably had some sort of incestuous relationship with him), but aside from the fact it's anything but a common name for a good Catholic girl in England in 1860, there's no proof it wasn't her human name. Fanfic, of course, has its own theories.

About the names: We never see Darla before she's named by the Master, so we can't know her previous name. It is not revealed in the TV series. (I don't know about the comics, but I suspect the answer is still no.) Drusilla, on the other hand, is taken from her family, and we have seen glimpses of life before being turned. There is no reason to assume her name has been changed. Not all vampires change their names; Spike is still alternatively known as "William the Bloody", and it is what Faith (in Buffy's body, during the switch) recognizes him as. ("William the Bloody, with a chip in his head.")

sadly no, all the best shows are good with the history or the main character. I just cant believe why no one realize the formula of whedon. example: breaking bad, amazing show but cut all the chapters of the one character, you get nothing (skyler, hank etc) take one character of buffy anyone. you get a serie. 1 or 2 season of faith the vampire slayer, spike, cordy, wesley, angel, oz, willow, anya, and the list go on. the character have a beginning, a lot in the middle, falls and raise, and the end. watch just the ep. of wesley and you have one amazing serie of this character "wesley the demon hunter" :).

Ines Zuniga I suppose for any crossover you'd need to have a main show and a spinoff at the same time, telling parallel storylines, and that's rare enough. Dr. Who and Torchwood comes to mind, and there are crossovers. I don't watch TV, though, so my experience is quite limited.

There's one thing of this episode that really bothers me. They didn't even realize how involuntarily racist it was. There were the Fanged Four surrounded by terrified people, and yet they felt the need to include a white missionary family to make them look human enough for Angel to save. Why? It could have been a Chinese family....

I already knew about the Boxer Rebellion, but that doesn't take away the fact that tv shows and movies have a history(and still currently) placing the focus of a white character(s) inside of the culture of another. A Chinese family caught in the mist of all the chaos, of the own home being destroyed in the mist of it all could been just as effective, but Hollywood doesn't like to do that...

Look, I wasn't trying to mock anyone in particular, but it's just something that I feel at times we're all doing (me included) these days when it comes to older pieces of media/fiction - even slightly older, like 15-20 years ago: there's a special urge to find as many 'problematic' things as possible. And a lot of it is justified, but sometimes I just feel like we're all being smug and patting ourselves on the back: "How great are we now, so enlightened, unlike all these stupid, bigoted people of the past".
