This entire sequence is just incredible. The acting and the cinematography really bring about the feeling of terror, helplessness and how stressful it can be, as well as how quickly things can go wrong. At the same time, Whip is calm, tactful and confident that he can minimize the casualties and the damage as much as possible, doing whatever is theoretically possible to succeed in that endeavor. I kno the copilot was understandably losing it but Whip kept him from locking up from fear and gave Margaret the confidence to follow his instructions. It really conveys just how terrorizing and stressful that situation can be and how quickly one must decide and act in order to try and regain control of the situation or to at least try and reach the best outcome. Just a really great 8 minute segment that sets the tone of the whole film. Denzel appears to be an actual seasoned pilot and he's one of our greatest actors, of any generation.

to me the scariest part of this scene is not the emergency or having to fly upside down. It's the captain telling the purser to tell the blackbox she loves her son. The captain has the understanding that 99.9% they arent getting out of this, and that line may be her last ever coherent sentence the world will hear. Telling someone to say their last words/knowing they are your last words, has got to be one of the most helpless feelings imaginable.

This crash sequence was inspired by the real life crash of Alaska Airlines flight 261 just off the coast of California in 2000. The real crash also had a mechanical failure that led to an uncontrollable pitch down attitude and the real pilots were able to arrest their dive by inverting their plane just like here. Unfortunately, they could not maintain enough thrust for lift and crashed into the ocean with all lives lost. The pilots on that flight are the only people to receive the pilots' association Gold Medal for Heroism without successfully landing their plane.

For those interested - Alaska Flight 261 was the inspiration for this maneuver in the film... and actually did fly inverted to correct for an uncontrolled nose down when a jackscrew controlling the horizontal stab trim failed. Everything except rolling this plane back to level and gliding into a field seems feasible, but realistically the plane would have to land inverted. No one actually survived on Alaskan 261.

it boils down to problem solving and checklists. he was able to trouble shoot what was wrong with the plane by going over all of the systems required for flight control. he realized something was forcing them into a dive, whatever it was that was forcing them down when the plane was upright should inversely help them to stay aloft when upside down. now obviously there is a lot more skill and knowledge involved, and it's not so simple, but this is what is required of people in urgent situations like this. good thing he woke up, the co-pilot absolutely was not going to pull this off

Video: Plane crash Ad after video: Are you considering becoming a commercial pilot?
@babalonkie3 жыл бұрын
Movie Watchers: Thank god this only happened in a film. Reality: Two Commercial Aircraft lost all elevation/pitch control. One dived straight into the ocean. The second managed to use flaps & engine throttling to slow down the decent for miles, in a last ditch effort, The captain tried to roll & invert the plane whilst hurtling towards earth only 500ft above ground... The wreckage was later found. It is believe the Captain only managed to get half way through the manoeuvre before hitting earth. Zero souls survived both scenario's.
@isavv_3 жыл бұрын
I saw the first accident on air crash investigation, but I couldn't find the second one
@babalonkie3 жыл бұрын
@@isavv_ It should of been mentioned on the same episode. Both scenarios have been featured on that show. Point is, the film used actual events... the only difference is he pulled it off in this film. A pilot went over this scene saying it's all fake... but his experience is only with 1/2 types commercial airlicraft. He stated the engine would instantly die due to fuel starvation or oil loss on inversion, whilst true on some aircraft others have inline fuel & oil pumps, meaning being upside down wont effect them short term (Like in the film). Also, not all engines immediately fully shutdown on extinguish mode for all aircraft. Some models pump C02 before cutting fuel, others self reignite immediately after extinguish, some fully shutdown etc etc. He does admit he is only experienced in certain aircraft. It was even calculated that the pilot in the second scenario would of likely pulled off the inversion maneuverer if he started 500 feet higher than he did (But that is in hindsight of course). So... it's not actually "impossible" as well as being a maneuverer of worthy thought & the scenario causing the problem has actually happened multiple times.
@isavv_3 жыл бұрын
@@babalonkie From my understanding.. If you lost the horizontal stabilizer on a T-tail plane like the first scenario which was a broken screw dew to not servicing, what's the point of inverting the plane? the stabilizer is loose and not stuck..so whatever you do, you will just fall straight to the ground..
@babalonkie3 жыл бұрын
@@isavv_ Edit: I got the stabilisers wrong in this comment (I assumed incorrectly due to multiple scenarios), so to stop incorrect information, i have edited this comment. Credit to bunker931. What i remember... Jammed and broken pins have been a factor in several scenarios. Both aircraft mentioned still had control in the wings. The first scenario may of involved loss of both vertical and horizontal in the tail, i cant remember to be honest. But the second scenario definitely involved the pilots doing these very manoeuvres as shown in the film. Hey i am not a aircraft technician, i am just regurgitating what the professionals said at the time.

It’s amazing the idea of how realistic this movie is. Other movies with plane crash scenes are actually disrespectfully unrealistic
@bazukaman73293 жыл бұрын
Actually, it isn't really that realistic...like the MD-80 family jets do not have Fuel dumps, the landing gears & flaps won't deploy at high speeds and also after you put out an engine fire, it won't restart again cuz it cuts off supply of fuel from the engine and get rids of everything that can cause a fire, it basically kills it. A very similar thing happened to Alaska Airlines Flight 261 (you can look it up if you wanna) Oh yeah also, pilots usually wouldn't talk so much with the ATC in a situation as intense as shown in the movie, they just follow a general rule of "Aviate, Navigate then Communicate". There are several other inconsistencies in the movie but the ones I mentioned here are the ones that bugged me the most, other than that the movie was really good. P.S.- I'm not an expert in these things but just an Aviation enthusiast. So, if I made any mistakes or said anything wrong then please feel free to correct me
