😢🥺 my father struggled with alcoholism from the time he was 17. when i first saw this film i wept like a baby. denzel’s performance helped me understand my father’s internal struggle, when prior to, all i felt toward my father’s battle w alcohol was resentment. the shame & heartbreak when he says “i’m an alcoholic”- no matter how many times i see this film, it makes me cry. my favorite part is him saying “God help me” & THEN being compelled to tell the truth like vomit…when vomiting usually from alcoholic CONSUMPTION, this time, he was vomiting from alcoholic CONFESSION. 👏🏽👏🏽 brilliant writing & superb acting from mr. denzel.

The woman that was questioning him knew he was drunk on the plane, but couldn't accuse him of it because the report was non-usable. Moreover, Ms Brock (the woman in red), even knowing what he did, was giving him an out: "In your opinion did she drink those bottles?" or, in other words "Blame Trina and you're home free". She was doing this because his actions were still remarkable and he saved a lot of people's lives. This scene is so powerful because he was only 1 more lie away from walking home free, all he had to do was accuse someone else, and he couldn't do it. Like he said later in the film, he had hit "his lifetime allotment of lies". This is my opinion is by far the most powerful scene in the movie.

@@TheMike3333 I can only speculate but her job is to read people. That naive first officer knew, and he could probably tell for reasons other than how he smelled. At least two of the three flight attendants knew, though one died and the other - like the FO - didn't tell the FAA. You can tell. In a person's body language, facial expressions, tone of voice. You can tell an addict, not in what they show but in the act of covering it up. Someone drank those two bottles. They turned up in the investigation and even she couldn't choose to overlook it. Probably the fact that he lawyered his toxicology report as inadmissible was a dead giveaway.

His honesty with himself and the NTSB inquiry help him more than trying to cover up his addiction and evade responsibility in blaming the other flight crew member for the 2 empty vodka bottles. Now he can forgive himself, get help, and get beyond his weakness.

This scene is a real message about addiction: at some point, you can't keep living in the dark anymore and you have to come to the light. Imo, the best part of the film was when he was in prison and he said that even though many people are angry at him for his lies, he's happy with himself for telling the truth when it counted. He found Christ, he got sober, and he rekindled his relationship with his son. Powerful.

Denzel - Oscar worthy clip of confession of being an alcoholic. Great perspective of an activated conscience at the cross roads of the pilot's life. There is still that fundamental integrity though it took a lot to confess. Amazing clip because of the gamut of emotions Denzel translates in the character through the screen to the movie-goer. Brilliant.

If you remove yourself from the intensity of the scene and focus on Denzel‘s acting, it is incredible. To see him sweat and move his tongue uncomfortably in his mouth. You can almost taste the metallic taste your mouth gets when confronted with extreme uncomfortable situations. We have all felt this at some degree in our lives.

I seen this movie when it first came out and it took me forever to come to a conclusion on what was the right thing to do. I know this is just a movie but what if it wasn’t, what would’ve been your conclusion? YES he was drinking the night before he had to fly this plane (that was wrong). Whether he had a few drinks, drugs or whatever the plane wasn’t a 100% when it took off so it was going down no matter what and that wasn’t his fault. When that occurred he was able to do the unthinkable which saved the lives of damn near EVERYBODY on the plane. They tested what he did to save those lives which had results of no other pilot being able to do what he did. YES he was guilty of the drinking but he didn’t cost nobody they life, that was the airlines fault. The airline should’ve been more than THANKFUL for him because without him everybody would’ve died and it still would’ve been their fault. I think this should’ve been one of them situations where you just gotta overlook the bigger picture and focus on the entire photo album. He didn’t deserve to go to prison...

I completely agree. If I was the government, I would either offer him a high quality rehab, or give him a truck of whiskey and let him drink into oblivion/death, if he wishes. Although that would mean no more piloting for him. :D

Which is why his "punishment" was as mild as it was - the judge even acknowledged that. See, you have to think in wider context. A "front" figure (a pilot, a surgeon, a bus driver etc.) who breaks the rules makes it easier for everyone in the background to break the rules. If the pilot is a drunk, why wouldn't the stewardess be drunk? If the pilot and the stewardess is drunk, why shouldn't the airport mechanic who is supposed to be refueling the plane be drunk? And so on and so forth. Before you know it, you end up with "Russia", where about 10% of drivers at any given moment have alcohol in their bloodstream, their cars are in disrepair, traffic regulations are ignored...
