As a long time airline captain, I can tell you that everything about this scene is made up Hollywood bull stein. Trust me, the LAST thing you do in moderate turbulence is speed up. That intensifies the effect of the turbulence on the airplane and you risk potential structural damage. Furthermore, no Pilot in his right mind would thread the needle like that between two thunderstorms when you could easily take a 45 degree turn to the right and go around the entire system. Better yet, just stay on the ground and wait 20 minutes for the system to clear out of the way. But that would make for a boring story. At least the acting was good….
@JustRememberWhoYoureWorkingFor3 жыл бұрын
I'm not a pilot but the thing I find unrealistic is the sound of an engine spooling up during the entire storm and suddenly when they get out of the clouds and into sunny weather that engine sound fades

They were both bad pilots -- flying at max speed in heavy turbulence is a great way to break the airplane -- they should have been slowing down, not speeding up. Poor judgement. Not only that but his Cockpit Resource Management (how well you work with your copilot), was terrible. The 1st Officer was also bad -- he allowed himself to be intimidated by the Captain, and didn't push back when the Captain broke the rules and exhibited poor judgement.

"If that's alright with you, Junior." I swear Denzel just makes you believe him in every role. If I had my way, he'd play me in my biopic. I'm white and 44, but he'll make it work.

I have a feeling, (I could be wrong) that captain Whitaker (Denzel) caused the crash by over speeding in the turbulent air, causing damage to the elevator rivets and causing them to malfunction and causing the plane to go into an uncontrollable dive
@santagemma62125 жыл бұрын
So did I, then blamed the airline for putting him on a broken plane.

It was the jack screw that stripped and failed. It is loosely based on a real incident near Los Angeles from which there were no survivors. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alaska_Airlines_Flight_261 but you are probably right that the turbulence (in the movie) is what stressed the jack screw enough to strip it.

Know this is an oooooold post, but couldnt help myself.. You were right about the "I could be wrong" part😆🤪

lol this isn't real life, the plane didnt crash cause of him damaging the plane. If it did they would have added that to the movie plot. The plane crashed because of whatever reason the writers and director chose the reason to be. In this movie they chose it to be a faulty plane. If this was real life, you would be right, but its not so logic doesnt apply.

@@robotman8444 The writers left it ambiguous on purpose whether Whitaker damaged the the jack screw, as Denzel himself confirmed in an interview.

I love being in plains and storms. It's exciting. It's awesome when the plane's going up-and-down and to the side. It's like a rollercoaster. The only thing you gotta fear is death. But when you die, you're not gonna feel it. Why worry about it?

I was flying a V-tail Bonanza over the Donner Pass one New Years eve, on a long distance flight from Florida, when I encountered the most severe turbulence I've ever flown in, w/ 50-100 ft. changes in elevation occurring in the blink of an eye. Thankfully, I always wear my safety belt or I would have been slammed into the roof and maybe knocked out. As it was, I came into Rialto airfield w/ 50-60 knot cross winds and just managed to put it down and requested assistance w/ the tie down, as I was flying alone. It took everything I and the flight deck guy had to secure it, but after 10 minutes it was secured, but it wasn't necessarily on the ground, but kinda floating on its tie downs. When I did a post-flight inspection the next day, I found the port wing tip was missing its red lens and the housing was bent in a bit. It only dawned on me why that lens was missing once I was in the air again - that lens had made contact w/ the ground when I made my landing!?! My heart beat a little faster for a few minutes, but I remember smiling to myself, knowing/feeling I had somehow cheated death.
