As a long time airline captain, I can tell you that everything about this scene is made up Hollywood bull stein. Trust me, the LAST thing you do in moderate turbulence is speed up. That intensifies the effect of the turbulence on the airplane and you risk potential structural damage. Furthermore, no Pilot in his right mind would thread the needle like that between two thunderstorms when you could easily take a 45 degree turn to the right and go around the entire system. Better yet, just stay on the ground and wait 20 minutes for the system to clear out of the way. But that would make for a boring story. At least the acting was good….

They were both bad pilots -- flying at max speed in heavy turbulence is a great way to break the airplane -- they should have been slowing down, not speeding up. Poor judgement. Not only that but his Cockpit Resource Management (how well you work with your copilot), was terrible. The 1st Officer was also bad -- he allowed himself to be intimidated by the Captain, and didn't push back when the Captain broke the rules and exhibited poor judgement.
@christopherfischer69985 жыл бұрын

I love how the movie forgets this scene when the over-speed of the engine probably cause the damage that led to the crash.

The entire flight crash was loosely based on the crash of an Air Alaska MD-80, which briefly flew inverted and level before crashing into the pacific ocean off the coast of California.

I was flying a V-tail Bonanza over the Donner Pass one New Years eve, on a long distance flight from Florida, when I encountered the most severe turbulence I've ever flown in, w/ 50-100 ft. changes in elevation occurring in the blink of an eye. Thankfully, I always wear my safety belt or I would have been slammed into the roof and maybe knocked out. As it was, I came into Rialto airfield w/ 50-60 knot cross winds and just managed to put it down and requested assistance w/ the tie down, as I was flying alone. It took everything I and the flight deck guy had to secure it, but after 10 minutes it was secured, but it wasn't necessarily on the ground, but kinda floating on its tie downs. When I did a post-flight inspection the next day, I found the port wing tip was missing its red lens and the housing was bent in a bit. It only dawned on me why that lens was missing once I was in the air again - that lens had made contact w/ the ground when I made my landing!?! My heart beat a little faster for a few minutes, but I remember smiling to myself, knowing/feeling I had somehow cheated death.

Definitely an example the difference between text book and ole school experience and knowledge Thant can’t be taught in school
@6828oaklawn3 жыл бұрын
I disagree: No pilot with old (not "ole") school experience would intentionally overspeed his aircraft. Or intentionally launch into a thunderstorm. Or fail to brief his flight attendant crew about departure turbulence. Or gigantically violate the sterile cockpit rule during the takeoff roll. Or lie to ATC regarding his altitude. Or ignore the well founded concerns of his first officer while failing to communicate a coherent plan to him. Nothing old school about that at all. This is a gigantic helping of made up Hollywood BS, ripping off what really happens at the airlines so the studio can make a buck. Here's what a real "old school" captain would have done. 1: Never in a million years show up drunk for work. 2: Brief his front and back end crews properly. 3: Delayed takeoff until the storm had passed. 4: Let the passengers know what's going on frequently, instead of subjecting them to an E ticket ride from Disney World. 5: Written up the airplane after exceeding multiple limitations which would likely have damaged it. "Old school" is EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE of what Denzel was doing . But why let a little truth and accuracy get in the way of a good story, especially when the producers can make a buck doing it?
