The name Bobby Fischer, at least to Americans, is synonymous with chess. A prodigy in the 50s, a world class player in the 60s, the 70s saw Fischer at his pinnacle. He earned the right to challenge Boris Spassky in a title run without comparison, defeating Mark Taimanov and Bent Larsen with perfect scores of 6-0, and ex-champion Petrosian 6½-2½. Now the stage was set, and the only thing standing between Fischer and Spassky was Fischer himself.
The match was mired in political overtones, during the height of the Cold War. The Soviet chess system had a monopoly on the title since 1948, and the expectations on Spassky were enormous. While Fischer studied chess virtually in seclusion, Spassky had the full resources of the USSR. Victor Baturinsky, head of Soviet Chess Sports Committee, said: "Basically, the Soviet leadership and the powers that be in sport, were interested in just one issue: how to stop Fischer from becoming World Champion.
With the match set to begin in Reykjavik, Iceland, Fischer (who had not signed any documents confirming his participation) began to make a number of demands, including a percentage of television rights, a larger prize fund, and all manner of conditions covering everything from the lighting to the chair cushions. To satisfy Bobby's demands of a larger prize fund, British chess promoter James Slater donated a dazzling $125,000 to be added to the prize fund. Fischer still needed more convincing by Bill Lombardy (Fischer's last-minute choice as second), and one famously persuasive telephone call from Henry Kissinger. Mere hours before he would be forfeited, Fischer arrived in Iceland.

Fischer had a lot of temper tantrums, and ruined his greatest victory for himself with them, but he was right about one thing. This was one of the most politically charged sports event of the century, comparable to Jesse Owens in the 1936 Olympics. Fischer and Spassky should have earned millions from it. I remember the excitement at the time. Americans were in complete awe of Soviet chess prowess, and Fischer was a godsend to Cold Warriors. His victory was like Neil Armstrong landing on the moon, beating the Soviets in the Space Race. It was huge (at the time).

Have you ever read what Jesse Owens said about 1936? He has his own book published. Learn to read books, don't believe U.S. propaganda. It was nothing politically charged in his win at the time. American Hollywood nonsense made you believe that.

Hi Agadmator, in a lot of my games playing black in Caro Kann, I have difficulty with games where 1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. e5... etc. I was wondering if you could cover a game you find particularly instructional in this line... Also: Shirov, Alexei (2746) vs. Bareev, Evgeny (2702) (Montecatini Terme | Montecatini Terme | Round 6 | 2 Aug 2000 | ECO: B12 | 1-0) is a pretty wild game! #suggestion

Fischer didn’t care about money . He turned down all endorsement deals and could’ve been much wealthier . Huge contribution to Chess

If only Fischer would of allowed camera's. At the time I was so rooting for Fischer not knowing how eccentric and manic he was. He was our champion standing up to the Russian dominance of chess is all I knew at age 16. I have a soft spot now for Spassky and while I'm glad Fischer won there is no doubt what the match did for world chess. If only there had been televised action there could of been an even greater benefit to world chess.

For a little flavor to go along with the back story agadmator has been giving us, here is the interview with Bobby Fischer on the Dick Cavett Show before the match. They talk about not having settled on a location yet to give a sense of the time frame of the interview. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHqoZHZ8g9WNa7s Probably even better is Bobby Fischer with Bob Hope after he's won the title. kzbin.info/www/bejne/goS6kqhppbmsf8k It is a bit of a self deprecating skit for Fischer where they poke a little fun at many of the things agadmator's brought up about the events surrounding the match. Definitely worth watching. Fischer just being on these shows helps demonstrate how big of a deal this match and his victory was back then. It is hard to describe just how ingrained Soviet chess dominance was at the time. It was the Cold War and every bit of competition mattered. Every Medal in every Olympic event mattered. This match was around same time as the Apollo Program. America could put men on the moon but couldn't beat a Russian at chess. All of that Cold War tension fueled the drama and the excitement around this match well beyond the realm of chess.

I play a lot of MTG and it's sort of the same philosophy - even if everything is even, always give your opponent a chance to make a mistake, because that's how you leverage your own skill into winning a game. Just because the position is 'drawn' doesn't always mean that you've secured a draw, because not everyone plays equally as well, and even on a game by game basis, sometimes people have good days and bad days, so if you know you're on top of your game, it's essentially 'free' to test your opponent and see if you can produce an advantage.

I feel you have chosen a very ugly photo of Spassky for his profile. He looks a lot more normal in some of his other photos from the same time period. Also, how come you have chosen a photo of an older fischer rather than one from 1972?

It doesn’t matter lmfao, no one comes on here fanboying over daddy Fischer or Spassky. They just wanna see some chess.

Rohit G I also would like to see a 1972 picture of Fisher. Before the government started messing him up.
