The name Bobby Fischer, at least to Americans, is synonymous with chess. A prodigy in the 50s, a world class player in the 60s, the 70s saw Fischer at his pinnacle. He earned the right to challenge Boris Spassky in a title run without comparison, defeating Mark Taimanov and Bent Larsen with perfect scores of 6-0, and ex-champion Petrosian 6½-2½. Now the stage was set, and the only thing standing between Fischer and Spassky was Fischer himself.
The match was mired in political overtones, during the height of the Cold War. The Soviet chess system had a monopoly on the title since 1948, and the expectations on Spassky were enormous. While Fischer studied chess virtually in seclusion, Spassky had the full resources of the USSR. Victor Baturinsky, head of Soviet Chess Sports Committee, said: "Basically, the Soviet leadership and the powers that be in sport, were interested in just one issue: how to stop Fischer from becoming World Champion.
With the match set to begin in Reykjavik, Iceland, Fischer (who had not signed any documents confirming his participation) began to make a number of demands, including a percentage of television rights, a larger prize fund, and all manner of conditions covering everything from the lighting to the chair cushions. To satisfy Bobby's demands of a larger prize fund, British chess promoter James Slater donated a dazzling $125,000 to be added to the prize fund. Fischer still needed more convincing by Bill Lombardy (Fischer's last-minute choice as second), and one famously persuasive telephone call from Henry Kissinger. Mere hours before he would be forfeited, Fischer arrived in Iceland.

I noticed that Fischer oftens gives up a bishop and a knight for the opponent's 2 knights. He leaves them with the bishop pair but makes sure that on of the bishop is blocked by pawns everywhere.

hi agadmator on 8:43 you said rook A8 to D1 is not great but its the best move by the engine , and as you analysed it , when lets say white blays Q to C1 then black does not have to double attack the knight first but play the move A takes on B5 , then after rook takes on D5 then Q to a6 protecting the bishop and also attacking the rook and the pawn , no way white can defend the pawn and the rook so he has to move the rook , if white tries to defend the rook by plying like rook B6 attacking queen then queen takes on A5, white plays rook takes bishop on b7 , then black has double attack on the knight on D2 and queen can take it , and the material i equal and white is up a pawn . so lets go back after black played rook D1 white has to play first has to play C5 takes on A6 and black takes back with the bishop , then white can play queen to C1 , but black can double attack knight by plying queen to c3 , and white moves the knight then black captures back that pawn on A5 , in any way white will not be up a pawn , in fact , black will have passed pawn . i have analysed that variation with the engine , and white is not better in that position , any way i like your vidios an am not new subscriber , i was here when you had like 100k , i enjoy your content , when i see fitcher games i espicially in this series , i watch the vidio as i put the moves in to the engine , no surprise that most bobby fitcher moves are engine moves , this guy is true genius the only reason why spassky lost was , not playing ROOK A8 to D8 but he played ROOK E8 to D8

I don't quite understand. Who knew more about who? You pointed out that Spassky had intelligence about Fischer's play in a position in one of the early games that he failed to make use of. This could have been because Spassky was being lazy or he had more confidence in his over the board play. Was it easier for Fischer to study the Russians, because they played in front of the whole world, or had the Russians been watching Fischer every since he was 14 and knew more?

It is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.

imho when you play the Breyer you need to find counter play in the queenside or open up the center and make smthg out of your light square bishop. In this game Fisher dominated the center (which is normal in the Ruy Lopez for white anw) and closed the queenside. Spassky was left in a very passive position that can be hold only by a computer but is humanly lost at the super GM lvl. my 2 cents

Tan116A It depends on perspective and narration style. Some top narrators like Agadamator treat the audience like individials to give a more intimate style and make each viewer believe they are connected personally. This may not be deliberate but just his natural style. Others broadcast to "the masses" and you can clearly see the difference in those styles. If Agadamator was talking to one person or 10,000 it would make hardly any difference to the delivery expect for the occasional reference to "some of you". In effect he is speaking to lots of individuals rather than a mass of chess fans. I think he is a very intelligent man and a good speaker. His vocabulary may not be in the top 90% but he is way better than the majority of English speakers. In my opinion he is the best chess commentator and analyst online although I have only watched about 10.

10:26 I would definitely push the move c4, feel so proud of myself afterward for have spotted and successfully thwarted the attempt by Fischer on f7, perhaps grab myself some beer, call my gf over, knowing the Grand Master would spend a good 20 minutes regretting his futile attack + another 20 minutes planning the next move.

A rich brit actually boosted the prize fund significantly with his own money to entice fisher to come play the game, so they were always safe on that front as they didn't actually pay most of it

At 9:00 what would happen if Qxc1 instead of Qxd2
@Moki260
@Moki260 5 жыл бұрын
I was wondering the same thing at first, but I guess after Qxc1 comes Rxc1 then Rxd2 and xa6 will be a simultaneous attack on the bishop on b7 by the pawn and on the rook on e8 by the bishop on a4. So if you move the rook pawn simply wins back the piece while becoming a very dangerous past pawn on b7 while at the same time blacks own past pawn will be attacked due to Rxc1 earlier

At 13:47, had Fischer played Rb6, that would pin the Bishop, while the other rook cuts the king from defending it, and if Spassky would play Rd1 to defend it, he could simply capture the B pawn. What you think of this play?

You cant cause Bd6 comes with check, he had to block

Trying to understand @16:58 what's wrong with Rf7 for black I assume sacrificing white rook for bishop and pushing g5 is still winning.
@invidia7520
@invidia7520 2 жыл бұрын
Rd1+ forces the black king away from the d file, so his bishop will be lost, and his only reply to that would be to capture the f pawn with check, and that's still completely losing.

minute 11:35 : why Spassky didnt defend with bishop to d6 or even rook to d8. I am wondering why it doesnt work
@Mentalist7if
@Mentalist7if 3 жыл бұрын
if you go bishop to d6 you just take it with the rook. Blacks Queen or rook must take it cause you are just down the piece and that removes one of the defenders of the f7 pawn. The rest you know.
