The 1990 WCC match between Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov was held from October 8 to December 30. The match locale was split, with the first 12 games played in New York, USA, and the final 12 in Lyons, France. The prize fund was three million dollars, with 5/8 going to the winner. In case of a tie, the prize fund would be shared equally with Kasparov retaining the title.
Unlike the 1987 WCC cycle in which Karpov was seeded directly into the final candidate match, this time he was only reserved a spot in the quarter finals, and thus had to win three mini-matches in order to face Kasparov. This he accomplished by defeating Johann Hjartarson 3½ to 1½, Artur Yusupov 4½ to 3½ and Jan Timman 6½ to 2½.
Perhaps as a psychological ploy, Karpov suggested a last minute change to the rules in the pre-match press conference. Karpov argued that since the results of their last two matches had been so close, that they should continue play, should they become locked in a 12-12 tie. Kasparov received this suggestion with a look of incredulity. "Mr. Karpov is the challenger," he said, "and he must win the match."
Leaving New York, the score was tied 6-6 (with one win apiece), but Kasparov turned up the heat in France. The New York Times reported:
Chess experts said Mr. Kasparov had lost confidence and grown nervous in New York after he had squandered the early lead in some games when he moved too fast to put his opponent away. Mr. Kasparov picked up steam, however, in Lyons. The match was tied at 8½ points each after 17 games, but Mr. Kasparov left his opponent almost hopelessly behind by winning the 18th and 20th games.

9:21 Karpov did not resign at this point. This is one of my favorite games and I have seen 3 other videos on it and studied it in books. Karpov resigned moves later and copied Kasparov's score sheet after move 40 only. I love your videos and greatly appreciate your channel. I've seen this exact game being played out in a Bollywood movie called 'Chhichhore'. In the movie, the losing opponent accepts the queen sacrifice and they played the exact same moves shown in the video.. The winner even mentions that his opponent hasn't studied Kasparov's games, and that he shouldn't even take the queen and resign..

I was very excited about the moves in this position, they were very deep, so I decided to see if the engine could find it. I used stockfish for this. I was shocked that there was another move other than Qxh6(It says that this move leads to check mate in 13 moves.) The better move is Nf7+. This move leads to check mate in 6 moves. 1)Nf7+ Qxf7 2)Qxh6+ Bh7 3)Rxa8 Nf6 4)Rxf8 Qxf8 5)Qxf8 Bg8 6)Qf6# This game is amazing...

whats amazing about this is that, after i ran this game through the engine and after kasparov captured that pawn with the knight, karpov had a 0.65 advantage and even though karpov played all the best moves suggested by the engine, he still lost. this reminds me of how alphazero defeated stockfish

Awesome ending to this game! Kasparov actually missed mate in 6 in the penultimate position: he should've played Nf7+ according to Stockfish in place of Qxh6. However, this line looks really tough and is not so obvious - I analysed it for a while but couldn't see a mate so checked Stockfish, maybe Kasparov saw the potential but didn't want to get 3/4 moves in only to find he'd miscalculated. Still inspiring play from Kasparov though!

Why are you calling this 3rd match? This was 5th: 1st match was disrupted by FIDE president after 48 games, then 2nd match in Moscow won by Kasparov, 3rd match in Leningrad won by Kasparov, 4th match in Sevilla draw and 5th match New York/Lyon Anyways, thanks for great commentary, I enjoyed it. I remember watching the video when Kasparov explains this, but if it ended at Queen takes Pawn, then why did Kasparov say: "It's unforgettable mistake, you should take with the rook"? Meaning they carried on playing... I think after Gary played Queen takes Pawn, they actually continued playing, then Kasparov took with the bishop instead of the rook.

10:03 Actualy black cannot stop the check-mate in next move by N-e7 nor any other move because white plays R-g7+ and mate. The point is the Rook g7 is double chess.
