In USSR Tal was written (and called) as "Таль". 4th letter means a soft sign. It is not spelled, but makes L "soft". Adds ambiguity to how exactly Agad spells the name of his kid. This is not a name though. Tal's name was Mikhail. It's rather common to give a name of some special person to your kid. Giving a surname (family name) instead of a name looks kind of strange. At least in a country of origin it would be strange for sure. Same as calling a kid Kasparov instead of Garry, for example. That said, who cares, as long as kid grows happy.

AlphaZero vs. Stockfish was a game changer in 2016. The self training 'neural network' was the way to go. Stockfish 16 is currently learning from around one million games per day. AlphaZero was trained in just nine hours back then.

I really hope "game changer" was a subtle reference to the book that analysed some of the games of that series, by Sadler and Regan, as well as other contributors. I recommend it to anybody interested. Full title, "Game Changer: AlphaZero's Groundbreaking Chess Strategies and the Promise of AI"

A good way to think about chess computer ratings, and just ratings in general is in a log scale. This makes sense since it is a bell curve system. Going up 200 points when you are 2500 is much harder than going up 200 points when u r 1000. It's the same with chess engines, they may only be 1000 points above the top chess players, but this indicates many many times their strength

In CCRL, the opening moves are predetermined, although not necessarily that elaborate. In knockout tournaments, the deeper you go, the longer the predetermination. In the "season games" it depends on the ratings -- the "premier" engines usually get about 8 half-moves that they must play, while the div 4 engines usually only have two. The championship matches are RIDICULOUS. This used to give Leela fits against Stockfish, because Stockfish is opening ambivalent, while Leela trained by playing against herself. Even something as prosaic as the King's Gambit would knock Leela off her game, because it's not an opening she'd ever play, because she just regarded it as bad, so she'd be dumped off in a totally unfamiliar position. In theory, the evaluation is the evaluation and a ResNet is supposed to be able to figure out the compensation and form a likely plan, yadda yadda yadda, but in practice it doesn't work like that. Anyway, for this game, if it's not the Super Final, it's probably a couple of moves a piece and then they're free to fight it out.

I remember the early days of engines thinking that they would be the death of chess, but for me at least, since AZ came along and embarrassed Stockfish, including with several immortal style games, I've been pretty amazed and regularly make time to check out engine games. Once the queen sac is played it does look somewhat thematic, with blacks responses almost forced to avoid windmills and nasty exchanges, and then precision wins out. That said, I really don't think even many super GMs would play that. Nez's sack on f6 was similarly beautiful and unexpected, so perhaps such things aren't totally beyond humans, but yeah, this game is beautiful, and you have to say if a human did play that, it would literally be discussed a century later.
