Not only are they easy on the eyes but if you’re a beginning gardener, they’re 1 of the easy maintenance houseplants out there. These Agalonema aka Chinese Evergreen care & growing tips will get you well on your way.
When I worked in the interior landscaping biz Aglaonemas were the quintessential file cabinet & credenza plants that we used in offices. Not easy environments for these sub-tropical and tropical plants but they handled it all like troopers.
I’ve always had a fondness for these patterned beauties and decided it was about time to do a video & post on them. They’re so easy to care for and easy to find - what was I waiting for?!

I got a stalk that fell over from a old plant. It had been thrown in the outside trash in freezing temperatures. Rooting hormone and sat in water for 3 months before it finally started to root. It was so unhappy 😢 one warm cloudy day I sat her outside. Instant happiness!! She loves morning sunshine. When it gets too hot I put her in spotty shade. The other day I was busy and she was in full hot sun for 2 hrs. She seemed to enjoy it!! I've been leaving her outside on nice nights. She loves the breeze and humidity. Love her!! We both dread winter!!

I have the Maria Ag and it's such a hardy plant! It surprised me this Summer with some blooms and it immediately reminded me of the Peace Lily.

Hi Carmen - Yes, they both have a spathe flower. My Ag Maria was in bloom too but the flowers are smaller than the Ag Red. Nell

I have a Siam or Red Firecracker Ag (they look alike so don't know which) & it is getting very leggy almost vine like where it needs to be propped up. Should I just repot to a bigger or cut it? It loves the lamp table it is on.

Hi Nell. In an attempt to make my Silver Bay Aglonema bushier, I tried to pull out the new leaf that was just beginning to come up. I instead broke is somewhere inside the mother leaf. Tried to pull out again, unsuccessfully. I bought it a year back and is other wise quite healthy. Would this break out harm the plant?

I thought the red siam was a different one? I know I went to Lowes recently and they had the red siam and then this one that you said is a red siam. Both listed as such, but clearly a bit different looking.

Erica - There are a few red/pink varieties & sometimes growers call them different names. I bought mine a while ago & the sign said "Red" & the tag in the plant said "Red Siam". Nell

Thank you Layne - I'm trying to keep my plant care videos shorter. The pruning is pretty easy, just remove the spent lower leaves & flowers. If yours is getting leggy, cut it 3/4s of the way back. New growth will eventually appear. Nell

Too talkative. Concentrate on what is important and plan what you are going to say. This video wanders about in a scatterbrained fashion. concentrate on: What is the scientific name of the plant and its common names; what kind of light does it like, and water. How does it propagate?
