Agate Angler

4 жыл бұрын

Kip and I got out once again for an awesome afternoon on the Yellowstone River. The water level is rising quickly, and unless we get some cooler weather, the flooding should start any day. We found a couple incredible agates today, as well as one super interesting piece of chert, along with tons of other neat pieces of Yellowstone River Treasures! Thanks for watching.

Agate Angler, That first piece of petrified wood was very striking, but you outdid yourself with that agate at four minutes in. You don't find a beaut like that every day. I wouldn't tumble or do anything to alter that one, except rub some oil on it every so often. At three : twenty eight there was a very vivid greenish blue colored small stone and the most perfect looking little, buttery colored heart shaped rock. You can sell the heart shaped rocks single or a bag full, without doing a thing to them. Woah! That really did look like an eyeball looking back at us from that one agate at ten : ten. One fascinating find after another. Glad you made it back to the Yellowstone River before the water is up for the season. Love that you have a steady filming hand.

You find the best agates Alex! I can't even tell you which one is my favorite they are all so cool. Out of all the others... 6:30- my favorite, 12:00 looks like it's a limb cast (may be why it's lighter in weight), 14:45- my new favorite haha and that pink banded beauty sure looks like chert to me... Wonderstone possibly. Stunning finds and a fun adventure as always.😎 But I think Kip was looking for a stick...😄🐾

I have high hopes for Kip as a rock hound, but he seems more interested in other activities..... he's got time. Thanks for you're awesome comment Marlaina! I still am not sure how to differentiate a limb cast from any other old agate, perhaps you could help me understand. I love that pink chert, it is unlike anything else I've ever found, but I'll give you a little spoiler and let you know that I found some more!!!! Thanks for coming along as always.
@MarlainaAtkins
@MarlainaAtkins 4 жыл бұрын
@@AgateAngler hey sorry to just get back to ya! So the reason I'm thinking limb cast is because of all the white looks to be calcium carbonate which is very commonly covering the outer surface of the cast, and is much lighter in weight than agate/silica. That's why the weight may seem off to you. Secondly, the outer surface looks like wood, but the side window view looks to have no signs of wood grain. That being said... The difference between agate and limb cast is...not much if replaced with agate haha!😄 Ok I'll try my best here... a limb cast forms when wood, buried in the earth, decomposes completely away, leaving a void/hole. Which later gets filled in by silica, calcium carbonate, or both...leaving an agatized mold per say that only resembles the wood it replaced by the outside. Whatever shape the wood piece was is what the limb cast will look like from the outside. So a limb cast is an agate that is shaped in the form of the limb it replaced. But only if it has banding is it an agate. Otherwise it is chalcedony/jasper filled. But because it replaced a void of a piece of wood, it is technically called a limb cast. Are you confused yet? Haha. I hope this helped to differentiate agate and limb cast. Here is a great article on petrified wood if you want to check it out. It may be less confusing. But I appreciate the question. It's part of how we learn. Cheers Alex🐾 www.mamasminerals.com/Petrified-Wood-and-How-Its-Formed_ep_63.html

17:27, I managed to find a yellow jasper like that one on the beach but with black bands that make it look like a tiger 🐯 and that's what got my attention to it in the first place 😮

@@AgateAngler I look forward to it as well, makes me want to come to Montana to explore! I usually get agate and jasper at the central Calif. beaches, but they are closed until further notice

@@cynergy4 What a bummer! Hopefully things slowly begin to open soon. What strange times we're living in.... I'd highly recommend a trip to Montana at some point. The Yellowstone river alone makes it worthwhile.

If you put a bandaid on the speaker it will stop the wind and won't hamper the sound quality to bad
@AgateAngler

Thanks for the advice. It is tricky to deal with the wind that we get here in the spring. I'll have to try something like that though. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel.

G'Day there from "The Land Down Under" Australia. Some really cool finds you discovered on that trip, would love to know what that unusual pink one is. Keep safe keep well regards, Valerie.

Random thought. If you're still using that same spray bottle that tears up your thumb, when you hold it wrong. Could try putting some electric tape, or something, around the sharp part. That or, for a more permanent fix, you could try and find a nice little gritty rock (or i guess some sand paper, but where's the fun in that) to sand that bit down til it isn't sharp anymore! Haha looks painful and probably obnoxious xD

Are you around Columbus? Looks like it. If you ever come down to Cody, I'll take you to some of the spots I hit on a daily basis. It takes a dirt bike or a four wheeler to get out there, but I've found some incredible stuff out there. Lots of fossils, carnelion agate, jasper, gastroliths...lots of red jasper...and rattlesnakes.

Great stuff! Really enjoy watching you find your treasures. I unfortunately dont live near the Yellowstone. I live in Ct. I have "liked" an collected rocks for a number of years. How do I find out what the rocks Ive kept are, an if I get a tumbler if they are worth tumbling. Pretty clueless..just go by ..like what I find. Thanks alot !

Do you sell the petrified wood?
@AgateAngler
@AgateAngler 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Gerald, I've had a surprising number of people inquire about selling petrified wood, so I'm planning on not selling it, but shipping 2-3 packages per month on a first come first serve basis. I'll be asking for folks to cover the shipping and then add in an optional donation for the channel if they'd like. I'm in the middle of some tests for school, but info on that should be coming in a future video.
