Today Kip and I are out exploring and treasure hunting on an unpicked island on the Yellowstone River. We found some awesome rocks including agates, jasper, and a MASSIVE 10 lb chunk of petrified wood. It was an incredible day out on the river and I had an absolute blast. We also got to pick up some trash while we were at it.

The stone at 10:55 looks like what we have on our island off the coast of British Columbia, a Chrysanthemum Stone or a Flower stone. The flowers should go right through the rock.

Sometimes we can't listen to our own rules, when we tell ourselves no more petrified wood or quartz or jasper but then we find the most fantastically beautiful pieces. You can see the difference being close to town as you say but still you braved the crossing and got rewarded. Awesome rock show and weigh in at the end, thank you. 👍🏼

Yeah.... the truth is that pretty much every piece of petrified wood I find on the Yellowstone is beautiful in its own way. So I have a hard time putting them down. At the same time, I don't see much reason to take them home if I'm not going to do anything with them. Seems greedy. Take care and thanks for watching!

I enjoyed this video a lot, cool to see an older one that I hadn't caught yet, especially one that seems to be from when Alex first started filming. I sure hope he comes back with more new videos soon! I need my Kip fix! Seriously, I hope his new career is going well ... but also that he will still have time for more hounding soon! Both for him and us bc Im sure he misses it! It's awesome when your education finally pays off and after so much $ in loans/ tuition and related expenses, and having worked So hard on the constant grind of work/ school/ home life, it's understandable he take whatever time he needs. But how I miss the excitement of seeing a new video just dropped! I do watch other hounder's videos but I really love Alex's passion and joy and newbie excitement...not to mention the Kipster, of course! They are the very first hounders I started watching- it was only bc I was so blow away with the finds, their beauty, and his love for nature that I started watching others as well!

@@MACorrupt I really don't know if I want to charge $$$ for rocks since I enjoy finding them and they are free for me. However, what I could imagine doing in the future would be to send out a limited number of packages per month or so. It would be likely a first come, first serve basis. I'd ask people to cover the cost of shipping (8$ for a flat rate box) and then if they want to add on something extra then that would be up to them. I'm a student so I don't have a ton of time on my hands, so I can't let it become something that consumes a great deal of time. I probably won't advertise it, so if you want to, just maybe remind me in a month or two. Take care!

Your rock at 10:50 appears to be basalt porphyry. The biggest piece of petrified wood I've found is about the size of a baseball. There is a boulder I found with something that appears to be petrified wood stuck in it that my wife and I found under a bridge near where we live, but I was only able to take a small chunk of it to examine under the microscope. I am still up in the air on it, but it's unique to anything else I've seen with visible bands. It's not sediment because it's a clearly separate defined feature within the stone, but it may just be a preserved imprint from a piece of wood.

Oddly enough, Terri, I've had a few people ask me now. I'll be setting up some sort of process to share rocks with folks. It wont be for another few weeks or so, but I'll keep you posted. I don't want to "sell" them, but I'll probably just ask for people to cover the cost of shipping and they can donate to the channel if they would like to. Take care!

@@AgateAngler Awwwe, you're no fun lol. I ran a sewage treatment plant. Geese were not my friends. Mallards though, other than occasionally having a young mommy get her ducklings in a world of hurt by taking them into the aeration basins, we got along great. Hell, I even fabbed up rescue ramps and recovery platforms for the poor little critters.

You guys have a lot of petrified wood in Montana! Do you know what it is (name of the species of wood the fossil comes from) and how old?
@AgateAngler
@AgateAngler 4 жыл бұрын
I wish I knew the answer to this question as I often wonder myself. I think it is a mixture of varieties to be honest, and I know that palm wood can be found, but I'm afraid that's the extent of my knowledge.

Is it possible to have opal in yellowstone pet. wood? That blue in the 10pounder maybe? Nice hunt though! Nice stuff!

I've wondered the same thing myself. There was a piece of wood that I cut open in my Quarantine Cutting video (2 videos ago I think) that had a opal-like material on the inside in veins. So maybe?
