I put mine in old socks and than use the hammer lightly. It sometimes tears the sock a little but most of it is left inside to dump out in a pail. ❤

So many rocks to pick walking. I found a geode about a half a size of a loaf of bread covered with amethyst and lodestone all kinds of colors. Covered with Pin holes. So glad I saw you use a hammer.

When I saw the bag I knew it was The Gem Shop lol. Had a couple of pounds of geodes come in from them today. My Sonora amethyst geodes weren’t that impressive but I did get a double tranca geode and both sides had beautiful bubbles covered in a light blue druzy crystal.

I use a small flat masons chisel and hammer to crack mine open. I tap the chisel rather lightly which pinpoints the rock in way that causes it open rather evenly. Light tap not like hammer hit with a hammer sized hit. Dont tap hit hard on chisel tho. Only lightly tap it. Thinking you may like this method results opposed to the surface of hammers head. Just a thought I'd like see you try and see how you think turns out when opens it.

I'm going to Geode Fest in Keokuk, Iowa in a few weeks. It will be my second time geode hunting. I found a few in a creek near Keokuk a few years ago and the lady I went with cracked them open by knocking the rocks together in her hands. I found one very nice geode with pink crystals. And I have couple large geodes that are most likely solid, but I've got no way to open them.

Umm...i like to suggest to not crack them this way. Maybe u can use the cutter to cut like maybe half inch in all the way around it, then use a screw driver or chisel to open it. That way u get to retain both sides and the crystals inside will be less damaged too. 👍👍👍

You shouldn't crack anything open lol your supposed to cut them open get yourself a 3 or 4 inch angle grinder throw a wet/dry diamond carbite tile cutting blade while cutting drip water from a sponge onto the blade
