Thanks for the great little video! We live in Utah but travel to the Oregon Coast every summer. We love to find cool rocks on the beach, and our garden at home is full of our great finds! I really appreciate your identification of the rocks you found, because we have many of the same types and it is so fun to know what they are! I want to start learning more and be able to identify more of the rocks we find. We’ve been to that beach at Roads End, about 20 yrs ago when my husband and I were first married. We used to always stay at Neskowin, just north of there. For the last five years, we’ve gone south down to Brookings, so we can enjoy the Redwoods as well. There are always tons of cool rocks on the beach south of Brookings town where the Winchuck river meets the ocean. I love that rock you showed right at the end, with that sparkly crust! I’d make a necklace out of that one!

I always learn so much from you guys! How do you clean calcite crust from fossilized shells?
@agateenchantmentrockwizard5969
@agateenchantmentrockwizard5969 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jennifer 👋 and thank you! It's tricky using any kind of solvent to remove calcite from shells because shells have a form of calcite in them. Use a dremel type tool (gently) to reveal and then polish them. Check out Karen's channel at Ozone Fine Art-Ventures. She has done several fossil shell reveal and then polishes them.

I'm so new to this, but I live on the mendocino coast of California. I saw greyish/greenish rocks that were banded or streaked with red. Looked very interesting wet, but not dry. I'm not sure what it is. Would that most likely be granite?

I guess I find a lot of the milky quartz with ryolite. Like a snowball with an orange peel? I like the smaller pieces too, a lot of them on the beach have cool patterns in them.
@agateenchantmentrockwizard5969
@agateenchantmentrockwizard5969 2 жыл бұрын
Well, depending on where you live, milky quartz may be the local stone. I know when I first started trying to identify the rocks I was finding, it seemed all the "agates" I was finding was quartzite or "sugar quarz". I looked into the geology & found a massive glacier had brought it down from Canada. I knew there were agates & clear quartz in the area because I & others had found several. I got to talking to a local couple of rockhounds. One of them gave me a lot of advice, advice I pass on in our videos. The best piece of advice he gave me was to "agatize" my eyes, train them to see what I was looking for. After that, the agates just seemed to jump out!
@gatchrocks
@gatchrocks 2 жыл бұрын
@@agateenchantmentrockwizard5969 I'm on oregon coast when I find them. I'm not great at identification, but they seem like the sugar agates I see people talk about, but it's always hard to tell since a lot of photos I find are of angular mountain rough rather than water-smooth rough. I lot of the orange and white ones are ball shaped, while some are various colors, opaque, but seem like translucent covering. I find smaller agates, but I know these aren't agates, largely because there are too many for people to be leaving big agates around. lol. I've yet to tumble any of them.
@gatchrocks
@gatchrocks 2 жыл бұрын
@@agateenchantmentrockwizard5969 what I think are the sugar agates or whatever though, are similar to those milky quartz/rhyolite, some pure milky, some pure orangish, and some layered as shown in your video.

There are a lot of sugar agates at the Oregon coast .. that being said, there are a lot of agates at the coast also. I tend to agate hunt no further north than Oceanside. Most of the beaches north of that tend to be mostly sugar. My favorite beaches ... Oceanside, Short Beach, Lincoln City, south of Newport, Yachats, Bob Creek wayside, Strawberry Hill, Beverly Beach, Neptune Wayside to name a few..
