I recognize what he did from personal experience. When playing single player against the computer, you can pause the game and continue giving instructions. You can pause the game (which stops the game timer), and give instructions to every single unit and building, which will execute as soon as the game is unpaused. That's the most likely reason he had such finite control of the game. Pausing makes micromanaging SO much easier. :)

Akarius I watched the recording again to solve the -4 pop mystery at around 7:50 which I had to use view lock for. When I was trying to figure that out, I also found that he did use pause when killing one of the boar. This is because he selects his Town Center very *very* briefly to release his garrisoned villagers. Other than that, I found no other glaring uses of the pause button.

pistachenoot123 So after seeing another comment asking the same thing, I decided it was finally time to put the mystery to rest. He deletes his hurt villagers that are gathering gold. As to why, I'm not too sure, but I suspect that he just randomly grabs some villies to pull off the tower rush and wants to minimize his losses during the construction of the towers (losing a a villager that's building a tower in one hit is much worse than losing one in ten hits as it slows the tower construction more). Good catch, really. I think I speak for everyone when I say that I wouldn't have ever noticed.

Yeah... i played this game back when it came out and i was on zone.com, a really old school website... with tons of great games and this was no where near close how folks, including myself rushed to imperial age... >_>.....i mean, kudos on making the video and throwing in some hype or the game, but.. yeah........ that's all and keep coming out with the content, i miss playing this game...

That probably isnt the most optimal speed. For mongols hunters may work 50% faster but a civilization like Spanish where building is 30% faster sounds a lot better, Huns with no housing population (with -100 wood) sounds better or even the italians (-10% cheaper cost to advance to next ages = 450 food for feudal age, 720 food+180 gold for castle age, 900 food+720 gold for imperial age) which means you'd save up from having to harvest about 230 food+100 gold. Chinese would be a bit of a gamble with +3 villagers-50 wood-150 food + 5 population size from town center. Now in technical terms, I would believe YES, you do have the FASTEST TIME for MONGOLS =)

Oh, this isn't my imperial time. This is a recorded game that for some reason very few people know about and I thought was super cool. I'm sure that the player in this recording isn't going for strategic play, but rather just to show off his speed. Thank you for the insightful comment though.

Even in Yucatan with civ as mongols to get imperial at 16 mins is not practical. Actually TheViper once reached imperial at 19 mins in one of the games of MOA tournament(so of course that's a standard build order ) with Byzantines. So for a practical build order I think it is possible for any civ to reach imperial at about 23 mins with a good eco in Yucatan-like maps.

+林泓叡 Oh, this video wasn't made to advocate this strategy if that's what you thought - it's just to show how insane the time was. Besides, he *really* screwed his economy up (even more than a standard fast imperial build order which is really made for an all-in blitzkrieg with powerful units). He even had to resort to tower rushing in the Imperial Age, which is terrible.

i think its normal ? back in the day when I played it with my friends, we must reach castle age in under 15min so that we have enough strong techs (something like knight) to defend against enemy. its not that we cant reach imperial age in 16min but castle age and imperial age does not have much different since you dont have enough resource to upgrade techs tree.

I originally thought it was some sick micro until I saw Analizer use the turkeys to block the boars in the double boar lure. Then I started to think he was doing F3 gameplay. I doubt even an AI would be able to do that.

***** No. The only civ that doesn't need loom is the Aztecs because it's free for them. This guy was only playing against a standard computer, so there was pretty much no risk of attack. Most likely, he wanted to set the record for fast imperials, and since it takes the same amount of time to create a villager as it does to research loom, he decided to sacrifice villager safety for villager gathering.

Momar Mbow I imagine that you're playing on the CD version, correct? What I would do is install UserPatch off of aok.heavengames.com or download Voobly and let it patch your game for you. UserPatch should fix all of the compatibility issues you have with the game. If I'm wrong and you're playing on Steam, go to your games library, select Age of Empires II HD Edition, right click it, head to properties and click Verify Game Cache under Local Files. I’m sort of new to aoe2 despite its an old game. I’ve heard a lot the term MICRO (in many videos I’ve watched) which I came to understand is like “micro play”, moving units to optimize their actions. Am I right? Or maybe my concept is wrong.. Hope someone can explain me this. Thanks!

Yes! Micro is basically just micromanaging your units, usually in combat. The best examples I can think of are moving crossbowmen out of the way of an incoming mangonel shot and regrouping them to focus their fire on the mangonel, thus winning the engagement, or using "hit and run" tactics when using cavalry archers for example. You may also hear a little bit about macro too, although I have noticed that the term has kind of faded away from the aoe2 community in the last couple of years. One might intuit that macro is the opposite of micro, but it actually isn't. Macro is really more about production than it is about controlling units, so allocating villagers to resources you're low on or building more buildings to produce more units that you need are the two main aspects of macro. +Achung yung Yeah. I doubt this rec is to show that the super fast imperial is viable and instead just shows that it's possible to do. Just a fun little thing I found, really. As the Koreans this might not be a terrible idea, but since Koreans don't get the Mongol hunt bonus you wouldn't be getting to trush before your opponent attacks you.

Impressive. But shouldn't the boar return to its original position after you ceased hunting it? It stuck around his TC for quite some time while he was gathering meat from the dead ones.

Yeah that confuses me too. I think it's possible that if the boar moves a certain distance from its original spot it will "forget" to go back, like in the case of boar stealing but I'm not sure.

You can do a follow up video, the settings are all on standard/normal, except i went for all visible as you can just explore and restart so its meaningless. I believe this time can be easily beaten by 20s+ with enough practice. Where should i send you the recording ?

Cute and showy but never viable for any competitive game. The whole point of fast imperial is a rush to the powerspike afforded by gunpowder units. Since he is Mongols he doesn't even get them, but even if he did he doesn't have the resources in imperial to create even one bombard cannon. He could have won this game much faster if he invested into towers in the feudal or even castle age, since imperial age didn't get him anything.

I actually went back to this recorded game some months ago and it turns out that he deleted his hurt villagers. My guess is that it's so none of them would be easily killed if he just sent random villagers forward to build towers. Thanks for the comment!
