I agree that the Japanese are an... odd... choice, given the theme of the expansion, but the Byzantines were central to the formation and execution of the First Crusade and continued to be a major power in the region until the Fourth Crusade, exerting a lot of influence over the Crusader States in the meantime

@@mertcanyuksel8783 i have no idea atm. I’d imagine it will be a new civ but very similar to the one currently in the game. Like HRE could get a Tuetonic order variant. With some different landmarks, different unique units, but a lot of the same faction traits and identity. But we’ll have too see. I’m just hyped at the idea

Great DLC, BUT please give us an GUARD Button in one of the next Updates❤❤ It must be possible to accompany traders with soldiers as protection, that would be so great! And a larger second gate for the walls so that the troops and siege machines don't always get stuck there.

Based on the timeframe of this campaign (from the First Crusade to the Hulagu's Expedition, 1095~1259), the variant of Abbasid Dynasty was most likely the Fatimid Caliphate that based in north Africa. Famous character Saladin was a minister of Fatimid before he established the Ayyubid Dynasty through a coup. Years later, the Mamluk Dynasty raise, they successfully resisted Mongol's Invasion in 1259. Until 1517, Mamluks was conquered by the Ottoman Turks. As for the Abbasids during that time, they were gradually marginalized by the Seljuk Turks from Central Asia. The Seljuk Turks expanded aggressively in the Middle East, even occupied the whole Anatolian plateau that originally belonged to the Byzantine Empire, which led the Byzantine Emperor to seek help from the Pope, triggering the first Crusades. Variant of Holy Roman Empire, it would likely focus on the Teutonic Knights which had a significant impact in Germanic region. The Templars and Hospitallers may only show up in the campaign. As for France, it's not easy to guess the variant. During this period, France was under the rule of Capétiens (987-1328), and later it was ruled by the Maison de Valois (1328-1589) which played a major role in the Hundred Years' War. But between these two dynasties, I don't know what's the difference. The last one, China, this is the most difficult one to guess. China already had the dynastic system of Tang, Song, Yuan, and Ming. If there were a variant during that time, could it be the Jin Dynasty? (The Western Xia had smaller influence and likely wouldn't be developed as a civilization.)

Crusades started when the Byzantine Emperor asked Pope for help to retake the lands that were taken from Byzantines by the Muslims, but the Crusaders went even farther, retaking Jerusalem from the Muslims and then keeping it for themselves. So it's good that they added them in this expansion. ;-)

Nice! I am excited for this expansion! It is good to finally have some new content to play with. I like all the announced new elements. The new civs as well as the campaign make a lovely and promissing first impression. At first I was sceptical about the variant civs, but after reading the deep dive about that topic on the AoE website I must say I am now very much looking forward to them. Jeanne d'Arc as a hero with level-ups? Such a refreshing new gameplay mechanic! After all, I think gameplay mechanics matter most and for that sake it is completely ok to take history as an inspiration instead of a mandatory template. Thank you and keep it up, dear AoE4 Team! 😀

I just bought Aoe4 recently, looking forward to this one as well. Also I would love to see Maratha Empire as one of the forces, they were underdogs that went against Sultanate and captured most of the India alone under the empire of Shivaji. there were quite few historical events and battles that the game can cover, also another 300 vs 1000s battle happened as well to let the King escape to a fort.
