An important thing to remember is that AoM is asymmetrical. The guy surrendered because you'd just wiped multiple of his armies, and for the whole game had a similar size army while having units that cost twice as much. Greek units are pricey vs cheap and quick egyptian units, but with equal numbers, they'll roll over the egyptian forces. Same for their early myth units, most of them are cheaper and easier to mass, unlike the Greek equivalents, but melt if in the wrong situation (Anubites to range, Wadjets in melee etc). Multiple times you wiped his army, and then retreated when you could have pressed for huge damage to his base. AoM matches can easily end in the classical age because of this.

They're called wadjet. And I think he should've micro-managed them more. Ranged myth units aren't particularly sturdy, especially not when you let _other_ myth units get too close - and _especially_ not when you let Greek hero units (who are limited in number since everyone is unique, but more than make up for that in terms of power) get too close.

Huh, it's even more of a redesign than I thought it would be. The Hydra regen upgrade was not present in the original and the Centaur's volley ability was a high-damage, high accuracy single shot instead. It also seems like Favour has been redesigned. There used to be a cap of 100, with Zeus the only god able to go above it (200). Now if you have god powers that cost 125 favour to reuse, that means the cap is either much higher or no longer present. I like that a lot, on Norse especially.
@TARDISES6 ай бұрын
From what I've seen in discussions, favour can go very, very high for everyone now, and Zeus still has his favour focus in the form of villagers generating more when tasked to a temple.

The Favor cap is now 65536, the highest number an unsigned 16-bit integer can reach. You'll most likely never use the higher age god powers more than 1-2 times in ranked, unless you completely ignore myth units. I would say it will even be rare to manage to use earth quake/tornado etc more than once. Favor generates in roughly the same rate as the original as far as I can tell.

I have some real mixxed feelings towards this remake that I'm gonna have to work through. It's beautiful, and I think its balance changes are good and interesting, and even though I don't enjoy PvP RTS, I'm really excited to play around with this game, except for one, key difference that has me conflicted. You see, they redid the voicework for the campaign. In isolation, that's not a bad thing: Hearing Athena and Arkantos speak with an actual Mediterranean accent (even if Arkantos sounds vaguely like a Spaniard to me) is a good change, and I actually really respect the new performances, I think they hired good actors. But they toned down the game's personality to do it. AoM was always an absolute Ham-and-Cheese Omlette of a story, that's what I *love* about it, and I don't feel like the new performances have that same over-the-top energy. I think I'll adjust in time, and I didn't get deep into the campaign during the beta, but I'm concerned that the game has lost a core piece of its early 00s cheeseball personality in the remake, and that would be a crying shame if true.

If new expansions come they wont be able to use the sale old voice actors
@magesticalmysterium68566 ай бұрын
I Mean, the new performances are alright in my book, but maybe they could consider getting the New voiceactors back into the studio and show them the Original Cinematics with the voices, to see how the story played out, and how units and heroes spoke. (I mean, if for instance, Amanra says something in a witty context , then maybe in Retold she should still do so)

@@felixgazzotti8424 I don't disagree with new voicework- as I said, I actually like giving the greek characters relevant accents, for example. I don't think ill of the new voice actors, they seem good. My objection is to the voice *direction* that makes the deliver less deliciously hammy.
@parkerdixon-word62956 ай бұрын
@@magesticalmysterium6856 The lines all seem to be word-for-word the same, it's not like the script is different. I would consider it a problem from the Voice *directors* who are instructing the actors and deciding which takes make it into the game. It is way more similar to the original game than I was expecting in terms of the game appearance. I'm not sure why I thought it would look different: AoEIII is basically the same both ways. The UI is very different and there are clear gameplay changes. I really love the idea of being able to pay for God powers with favour. It also means the old 100 favour cap is gone. In terms of how you were playing... I don't know why your advance is relatively slow. I would say we (my brother and I) always ate the chickens first but I don't think we were very good. Maybe they eat the goats? In AOEIII herdables gather much, much faster so there might be a similar dynamic I just never noticed. Use your granary upgrades. The original game had, iirc, both faster fattening and faster hunting techs. Use myth units against human units and/or buildings. Your hydras would've been good as siege weapons... and you definitely want them to heal since when they gain more heads, they become better. Five headed hydras were really strong in the original but keeping them alive long enough to kill enough stuff to gain five heads was difficult since the Greeks have bad healing options. In general, Classical Age myth Units < Heroic Age < Mythic Age. This was probably part of your opponent's thinking. On the other hand, I guess I never really got the point of the centaurs... minotaurs were always the classical age Greek myth unit I favoured (mind you, I can't even remember the third option and, as I said, I don't think I was very good). But probably the biggest thing to watch for would be not targeting the enemy myth units with your heroes and instead just letting them tank damage from human units. The combat triangle of heroes beat myth beat humans beat heroes is important to keep in mind. When your centaur got stuck, I'm pretty sure the real reason it died so fast was because the priests (a hero unit) were attacking.
@EvilDoresh6 ай бұрын
The main deal with the centaurs IMO is their range. Though they're probably not the best choice against Egyptians, since _all_ of their heroes are _also_ ranged.
@nicolinrucker51816 ай бұрын
Centaurs are VERY good raiders, Cyclopes are extra expensive extra strong Minotaurs, that said Minotaurs are definitely the best to push in Classical Age, Cyclopes it's fairly unlikely you can sustain making more unless your only human units are Toxotes(which isn't a terrible comp but it does make the Cyclopes look much squishier than they actually are since they'll be your only tanks) Minotaurs have more armor than Cyclopes, and are significantly cheaper in both food and favor(even before Bull Mino makes them cheaper in food)
@velyurong95136 ай бұрын
@@EvilDoreshgood point about minotaurs being more cost effective in the original! That music is the same of the original game i believe, all the sonds are very similar if not the same! But the visual and the animations are great!!!! i love it. Gameplay is more or less the same.. so for me is a great success!!! I love it!

Love the video, but i just wanted to add that if you cant build a house for extra pop, go searching for safe tc's to build, theyre 20 extra pop iirc, also more map control but otherwise great vid! :)

I was so happy with being able to join the beta. Being part of AoE 4, I was disappointed because I felt they deviated so far from the Age series, and the best of what was about the Age Series. But my God did they do this remake SOOOOO RIGHT. I LOVE IT!!!!!! IT’S STUNNING!!!!

In aom you can use trade caravans with yourself if you build them far away you can send them to your tc.

The GUI has a really nice clean feel, without being heartless like many other modern RTS. Think they have struck a good balance.

Love the content Spirit! I would watch AOM videos of yours with so much gusto. As for this build of the game, I really don't like the floating UI, the bar on the bottom of the original game screen added much needed immersion (it felt like you were playing as the culture). It was a great idea to have a way to distinguish the different types of units (standard/hero/myth) by their icons, but the glowing swirl aura effect behind the unit portraits are a bit too much as it stands now, maybe choose more natural colours, lower the opacity, or make the outline smaller I'm a bit sad the graphics are being pushed in a minimalist/stylized direction. I think people love AOE2 for how the graphics were less stylized. But so much of this game looks sick I am so excited!

I really like the remake as a fan of the original. Can't wait to play it again.... replay all the story missions and stuff. Will be a good time.

With regards to the age system, they added a kinda secret 5th age when you build the wonder you get the wonder age and the wonder gives a variety of benefits, including buffing your titan & making it much larger. the remake looks good, it has a lot of the classic feel with it's soundtrack and voicelines, while updating the ui and adding a ton of qol improvements, the pathfinding is an obvious issue but it should get fixed.

Auto macro in SP only but not MP seems really weird. I know some people have this weird thing with forcing you to do busywork in games but it just seems silly to me.

unfortunately the grognards often have the loudest voices, QoL changes make them jump up and down in rage

They should have less-monotonous skill intensive features if they want a high skill cap. Like garrisoning, tower rushes, more technologies, etc.
@lekhakaananta58646 ай бұрын
disappointed but not surprised. Auto-Queue was hugely contentious back when it was introduced in TT, and no other Age game tried it since. All the remakes could have included it as QoL update but didn't. AQ doesn't remove skill requirement for macro; if you leave the wrong units on AQ you can lose by producing the wrong units. All it does is remove busywork and give you more room to make decisions. All RTS should have AQ.

I don't understand why so many people think it completely ruins the game to have it other then "I had to learn it, so should you!" And just gatekeep the genre from new players. Usually all their arguments against it could also be used to get rid of other QoL features like any queing at all or rally points but you don't see them saying those ruin the game.
@mikesully1106 ай бұрын
It's because of the whiners, people whined when they added auto scout in AOE2:DE. Like what is wrong with having a button that lets your scout cavalry auto scout around the map like every other game with a scout? People have gotten used to it now though. Personally I never used autoqeue because i'd forget to turn it off or need food for other things but can't see a reason why it shouldn't be an option. Like if people thought every QoL feature was "dumbing down" we'd still have to build every unit indivudually and there'd be no rally points like in the original aoe1.

Take in count there are most people played this game when they were kids and never learned to play it properly, plus many new people who's trying the game for first time.

@@conde.nao.com.d no, that would have pissed people off, those voice lines are very iconic, you see people repeating them in every AoM video.

I really, really hope they add in Sol invictus as an expansion/ DLC. Having that with maybe the cult of Mithras would make a great late roman cults DLC.
@mikesully1106 ай бұрын
i always wished they'd added the actual Romans as an expansion instead of the Atlanteans which made no sense and was basically a wierd roman/greek hybrid (like having Murmillo a gladiator type as their main infantry? and Secutores as anti building infantry?) Why not just go all Roman? I reckon it'd have been accepted a lot better and who knows maybe we'd have even gotten a second Babylonian expansion afterwards.

my biggest takeaway from playing AOM online (after countless hours of comp stomp and campaign...seriously I've played through the campaign 10+ times) is that god powers can shaft you at home easily. a single scout in your base can result in an earthquake or tartarus gate out of nowhere. keep things walled up the best you can. also, with the lower overall population than AOE2, pushing with buildings becomes important. getting 10 villagers to the front lines to get towers up at the battlefield is standard procedure
@AisSora6 ай бұрын
As a casual, i'm actually looking forward to play the campaign XD I loved that as a kid, and maybe it's nostalgia talking, but it was probably the best I played in a strategy game, the story was great!

Looking quite promising! It's good to see this part of the franchise getting some of the developers love too. Will there be a video to any gameplay related changes? The graphics are definitely a big upgrade, but I'm not a fan of the Unit-UI-Panel though, hopefully that will be cleaned up a bit until Release. It's a few pixels too small, different fonts irritate and it doesn't feel neatly ordered yet. Also the big golden arrows are a bit too much for my liking.

Age of Mythology is, in my opinion, most similar to AoE 3 in terms of the pace / "feel" of the game... the God Powers are functionally very similar to the deck builder mechanic from 3, where this off-map "magical bonus" can arrive suddenly and *RADICALLY* shift the balance of power on the map; some of the late-game powers are literally things that are effectively "click here to destroy base" so a single flying scout spotting a forward position can sometimes be all that is needed to completely wipe out a player's plans
@zonetropper4 ай бұрын
Aoe3 is still faster pace than aom, however with retold that difference is narrowed due to increasing lethality and the game tickrate with the resource longitivity also being shorter. Furthermore it promotes classical age fights unlike the old game where you could comfortably do FH and take fights and combative phase from there. I disagree that shipments are comparable to godpowers because they still require a form of micro and proactive motion to claw that advantage from a losing momentum whereas a godpower is a simple rts support power that doesn't cost anything or requires any kind of nested order of steps to utilize the shift of effect to be in your favor.

So I've been playing the old AoM for a very long time and... I'm very ambivalent. On one hand, the game looks absolutely gorgeous. And the new balance changes, so far, are all directed towards the game being more insane and fun than it has ever been. Very excited for that. On the other hand, some of these things look... kinda mobile game quality. I'm thinking about the UI, and about the Meteor god power that has been shown a while back. And some of the god portraits, especially Egyptian, look like they were AI-made. Definitely not a fan of that , at all. But hopefully these flaws are just a feature of the beta, and will be corrected in the full release.
