I wonder how my opponents will react when I show up to the table with a bright and cleanly painted Brettonian army, wait for them to comment on my models and then respond, "They look like knights to you...?"

The infectious ability of the Ghoul King is something I would also like to see. I’m a little bummed they’re focused on grand, wild fights because that doesn’t really leave room for them to plan this sort of insidious internal takeover to bolster their forces. It’s a cool magic to be sure, but it doesn’t really fit into their style of fighting, at least given the Battletome lore. As far as the Varghulf Courtier, I imagine it as a court wizard, similar to Merlin or a great warbeast like a Gryph-hound. Heh, imagine a Flesh Eater Court that imagine themselves as Stormcasts.

Doesn't matter which lore video i watch, you make all the armies feel interesting. As a Stormcast player (and expanding in other armies over time) i can't say how many times i've watched all these video's. Great work mate.

I like to imagine whether the King spares you depends on a few factors. If you’re in a small group of like 5 people and you fall under the illusion, there's likely a higher chance of you being spared since there's way less of a threat and he can take the time to prepare the cannibal feast to cement the bond. Conversely, if it's a large battle and you fall under the illusion, the King might not take any chances and kill you for safety reasons and also that he can’t exactly prepare the feast at the time for obvious reasons. The personality of the king might also play a part, such as whether he's accepting/expansionistic or more cautious/defensive, much like how whether or not the King worships Nagash can vary heavily between kings.

I see quite a few people remembering that the old world Varghulf was a devolved vampire, but that doesn't seem to be the case in Age of Sigmar - tellingly, they don't have the 'Vampire' keyword, while Ghoul Kings, Blood Knights, Vargheists etc do. They just seem to be very powerful mordants - I agree it's a shame that they don't explain how they are created, but I suppose that gives you free rein to make it up yourself - maybe they've been fed Terrorgheist flesh? Or they are a 'super-Crypt Horror'. Possibly no-one knows why some mordants become Varghulfs - maybe they're just freak mutations.

The old lore is that they were Strigoi vampires.. A much more brutal type of vampire that didn't care about appearances and being human and relished in the hunt and barbarism. The mindset of the vampire was reflected in their physical appearance just like how Manfred Von Carstein looks so different than his kin being the one that is psychotically brutal. (At one point he even had a wing for an arm) The Strigoi almost had a werewolf look to them as they gained far more muscle than their Lahmian or Sylvanian cousins. (the three houses of the vampires in Warhammer: Lahmia (oldest) Strigoi, and Sylvania/Von Carstein) From there they devolved further, the less humanity they retained the less human they appeared until the devolved into hulking monstrosities called Varghulf (Var-ghoulf) or Vargheists. In those days crypt ghouls were sometimes said to be the victims of vampires that didn't turn but existed somewhere between living and true undeath, their hunger twisting them and making them crave flesh, whether living or not.. Others said they were just humans that gave into cannibalism and the darkest magics twisted their form as a curse for eating the flesh of man. (others say it only happens when you eat the flesh of long dead corpses)

My guess is that the Varghulf Courtier is a lesser vampire or ghoul king that has become blood drunk and transformed into a beast. Maybe a normal uncursed vampire that was transformed by the madness. The first one is what Varghulfs were in WHFB, and it translates well into the Flesh Eater lore. As for why they are second in command? If I remember right, not all Varghulfs are wild monsters. I think I remember End Times: Nagash had an armored Varghulf as a leader of a band of Blood Knights. The intelligence of a vampire with the bloodlust and strength of a voracious monster is probably well respected amongst the Flesheaters.

In warhammer fantasy, the varghulf were vampires who willingly give in to their more animalistic side. Not sure if that carried over though. Also what happens to the court and the delusion if the ghoul king dies?

If I remember correctly, in old fantasy, the varghulf was one that had given itself over willingly, while the vargheists were the result of a vampire going too long without feeding (usually as a form of punishment). Granted all this may have been changed for AoS, I will admit that my death lore in not up to snuff.

Hi Doug, first let me thank you for what you do. Your channel is my go to for AoS. I recommend it to all the AoS and 40k players at my local stores. That said here is my question on the identity on THE Ghoul King as in the first King. I know you have read Nagash, the Undying King. In it we meet Rikan Ven-Drak the Prince of Crows. This is one of the few times FEC is written about kinda in depth with the madness and delusion. Also the nobility Rikan still retains. What is the possibility of Rikan being the original Ghoul King? Or since he would be Tamara great uncle I suppose he would be too young and just “a” ghoul King. Either way Rikan the Prince of Crows will be my Ghoul King of the Sudden Reach court. Thanks again for what you do brother.

Interesting thought! While the book doesnt spend enough time to really dwell on the FEC, I dont think its the Carrion King. Someone of that power i think would overshadow the scene, and be much stronger then the FEC we see in the book.

Good to hear the Varghulf get a mention. Really is a shame there isnt more information on these things. Perhaps its similar to Crypt Infernals, where they have been mutated by feasting on a zombie dragon. Maybe feasted on the King's Terrorgheist? They do have a very similar look about them.

Well at least in Old Warhammer Fantasy Varghulfs are essentially Vampires that have abandoned all their humanity to become a predator living in the wild, but of course this doesn't gel well with The Flesh Eater Court since they're entire thing is thinking they're civilized.

Just ideas to further it. Like adding gold plate, gems, scrolls etc as that's in their lore now. I was thinking colour schemes? Like the new codex has some which US good but was going going to use those for ungors. For the slanngors was going to use demonnette scheme. One thing I do need help with. A slannesh chimera go.

how exactly does a ghoul king come to be? I know that if they sip from ushorans chalice or are from his court, carry that curse, same thing if they are a sycophant... but are there other ways? or is this the one and only way to be a ghoul king?

So what Flesh Eater Court character does like Nagash because the last two introduced big guys hate him and are cursed because of him. But that story is the reason I like these guys because Nagash is an idiot demi-god and why I want to build them in a Drak Clan theme army with Deathrattle.

Is the ghoul king above the delusion in some way? Why would he sneak into camp and spread some 'juice' to those he doesn't know knowing the effect it would have? Like you, I love the theme of the flesh eaters - I'm stuck in the mindset of warhammer cartoon where they are feeding some poor sop some guts i.redd.it/oyh3z80zzba11.jpg Then I think about the carrion king, he must have some sort of free thought to have started the whole thing.

I'll be honest, i *hate* the Ghoul King model. It's too dynamic, mKing it hard to put together, especially balencing on a Zombie Dragon. I've been kitbasing chaos and vampire lords, staining the armour with rust and gore.
