As someone who is brand new to Warhammer, Warcry and TTG’s in general, I’m very happy to hear the two armies I purchased (Maggotkin of Nurgle and Slaves to Darkness) are great for beginners. The more I read, the more synergies I find out about the two. Very excited to start painting and playing next week! Thanks for this video!

I thought this video was really cool. What might be a good little series would be like a "Where to Start" with each faction, like a brief overview of their ideal play style and some examples of what would be some good purchases to make to start a 1K army with that faction (also a good place to have some product links to the store site in the description/pinned comments). Another one that would be good would be a similar style video with suggested paint/ hobby supplies. I see lots of posts online about people interested in the hobby with absolutely no idea where to start, so that could be a good niche to explore, at least at first.

That first point is absolutely the most important. It's why I eneded up going with Deepkin as my first army, because I just love my big turtle. Do I win a whole lot of games? Not really, I'm honestly not the best player when it comes to remembering about objectives. But it doesn't really matter as long as my big turtle gets to be on the table and chomp down on a few enemies as a treat.

If you like randomness and painting lots of rats, Skaven are great. Of course these days you can paint a LOT less than back in WHFB and have a great army w/Stormfiends and such.

Yeah I split the introductory set with a friend. I have 20 models to paint, he has 5 😂 Also love the randomness and variation in characters. Have 25 clanrats and they're all unique. Meanwhile the stormcast are nearly identical and all have a hammer and shield.

Where would you put Skaven? I love the little A-holes but they still have metal model and horde fatigue can set in pretty hard when you're painting 60+ Clanrats.
@warpfireminis
@warpfireminis Жыл бұрын
Skaven are okay for a beginner; not the best, but not the worst. They're my favorite army by a mile, but they're also pretty frail and swingy; you have to put them in the right place at the right time and pick your fights carefully (as well as not blow yourself up). Running 40 Clanrats is the popular move in most lists and metal models don't bother me at all, I actually like a lot of the old sculpts, they've got character! Fingers crossed they're next on the range refresh list though, seeing GW kill it on all these new Seraphon sculpts gave me high hopes for the future!

I'm not a beginner but I recently have been having a bit of a new experience in AoS. I started with Legions of Nagash, Daughters of Khaine and then Slaves to darkness but once I started painting skaven I found I love them and I can't stop painting more. There is something to be said about an army you love. I can look past any flaws and I want to make things work and try to optimize because I just love my little rats. My normal philosophy with gaming is the more simple and straight forward my army is, the better I can focus on the objective and board. Skaven are not like that at all but my love for them is so great I might end up changing the way I play to something much more cunning with teleporting, spells and risky maneuvers.

What about The Sons of Behemat? I really like the idea of Kragnos and some giants running around though I'm afraid that their playstyle is very different from the average AOS army
@warpfireminis
@warpfireminis Жыл бұрын
Sons of Behemat are a very good army right now in my opinion! You'll have a little bit tougher time with battle tactics since you can only achieve 4 of the regular ones; you'll have to build/plan for doing one of your book specific tactics, but they're so good at denying objective control and denying opponent's battle tactics that it's usually not a problem. You can definitely bring Kragnos in for the 3D6 charge and a little extra damage output, but to excel with Sons it's really all about staying out of combat, picking your fights, and maintaining control of the objectives for as long as you can; if you just charge in you're going to lose more games than you win.

Skaven is my #1, but Sylvaneth is my #2 army. They're in a great place, super fun to play with lots of movement shenanigans and some real power-house units like a block of 6 Kurnoth Scythes. Hi. I know this comment is quite old, but I would like to put my two cents in. I, personally, would say go Beastclaw Raiders. Sons of Behemat play quite differently than the the other armies, so if you want to get another army you will need to get used to a different style, if only because of the likely drastic difference in army size. I do, however, see that you play Knights. I don't know how similar they are, but you should have some experience playing a low model count army. In short. I would say go Beastclaw. But if they jump out to you, then Sons would still be a good choice.

He said you can get the Stormcast half of the dominion box for around 50-60 dollars USD (saves you from having to buy the orruks, buuut you may miss out on the rulebook that comes in the starter set). Generally, the starter box is an awesome way to start because you get two starter armies you can play, which means you get to use friends as target practice and maybe get them into the game too!

If you already have a Stormcast half of Dominion built and are looking to add to it, here are a few of the Stormcast staples: - Stormdrake Guard - Fulminators/Tempestors - Longstrikes - More Annihilators - Knight Castellant - Protectors - Celestant Prime

Well. I have a Seraphon army (no experience playing) and was thinking about going into Bonereapers 😂 ah well. I also like Deepkin, Fyreslayer, Sylvaneth, and Gloomspite. Every army is pretty cool in AoS.

New Bonereapers book came out last week and is in a much better place! Still towards the more difficult side with a lot of timing things to keep track of, but at least they're playing the same game now.

would you recommend D'Ratz (Skaven) to new players?
@Lodorn
@Lodorn Жыл бұрын
Depending on your list, they can draw from many tricks. It's also not the easiest army to play, because of how fragile most of them are. But the army as a whole is not weak by all means. So if you like them, go for it and try to make informed decisions on where to take them.
@warpfireminis
@warpfireminis Жыл бұрын
Skaven are the focus of the next video going up now! They're a super fun army to play, but you have to be extra careful when it comes to positioning and can be on the trickier side for beginners. If you love them though, I'd 100% start there and feel good about the decision.

What about Night Haunts? I have two teenage nephews who are getting into the game and they both had a bad time with them. It is a complicated army and not all that punchy.
@warpfireminis
@warpfireminis Жыл бұрын
Nighthaunt can be a little tricky for sure. There's a lot to keep track of, but that gets countered by most of the army moving 8", almost everything saving on 4+, 6's to hit auto-wounding, and so on. I wouldn't put them on the easy list by any means, but they counter a lot of what the meta armies can do so they can still compete in games without being super heavy hitters.

Been in the hoby since 1990. The only curent army (aug 2023) I DO NOT recomend AT ALL to a fresh beginner is "Sons of Behemat". All the rest, if you like it, you want it, I guess you gona run it? I personaly love Ossiarch Bonereapers and Sylvaneth, also Flesh Eater Coarts. Why not Sons of Behemat? 1. You are not learning the game, you learn big monsters stomp hard and are unkillable. 2. No fast, small battles available to you. (these are the battles you need WAY more than 2000pointers) 3. Good luck finding anyone that, on the regular wants to play versus your 3 titans AND up to 9 giants. 4. This IS a tournament army, so everybody that wants to play against you, WILL bring their A-list. Not caring you are a beginner. 5. Get a second army on the cheap... for learning the game and actualy playing it on the regular. Take an alied army of the 'grand aliance destruction', so you can sometimes get some giants in the thick of it. Then curbstomp them with your 'not SoB' big'onz.

What is your opinion on the Deepkin and the Overlords?
@warpfireminis

Personally I prefer Deepkin! I like the aesthetic of the models more and then you have a variety of playstyles available where with KO you're pretty locked into just being a shooting army.

They just got their new book so I need to get some more games in with/against them to give you a solid answer. They used to struggle a bit on objectives, but you had way more shooting than anyone else so you'd just try to blast your way to victory; the new book looks like there are some more melee options and overall balance so should be looking good!

@warpfireminis
@warpfireminis Жыл бұрын
They can be! The tides take some getting used to and then you have to keep in mind that your entire army is pretty frail, so positioning and keeping units alive until that turn 3 sweet spot is key!

What about Sylvaneth?
@warpfireminis
@warpfireminis Жыл бұрын
Right now I wouldn't call Sylvaneth a beginner friendly army. You normally have fewer units than your opponent so you need to be really careful about positioning; if you lose a unit it really hurts. Then on top of that the playstyle is just very technical, you need to make the right decisions on where to charge, where to teleport, where to fade away, and so on while also being light on bodies for holding objectives.

but that's the point of wargaming... you should choose what you like. if you like khorne... go for it... if you like elves... go for it. Rules will change every single day or hour even years and expect new player to stick with army that is just good for new player. and an argument that something has good damage and good armour save really sells to people that wanna be competetive, but many people just wanna play bollock and take like 17 spellcasters yeeting spells or when playing 40k just taking admech and bring only chicken walkers and raiders... just cause you can an want

I know this is about 6 months later but for my recommendation for new players and veterans is stay away from Stormcasts period I know alot of people like em but in reality they are by far the worst army GW has ever created, they die sooo easily; 90% of their armour saves are shit, only a few units an Characters have mortal saves, range attacks an damage suck 100% of the time, dragons are now worse then shit your lucky to have any of them at the end of the battle. Stormcasts need to be rewriten an beefed up more they became wayyyyyyy tooooo shitty to survive even against Daughters of Khaine im mean seriously everytime i play against them with my Blades of Khorne or Lumineth or my Slave to Darkness i cry for my opponent because they have no idea whats about to happen to them, so yeah stay away from Stormcast until their powered up better.

Starting as stormcast was a very bad option l took. My friends started seraphon, DoS and LL . They are having fun, changing lists etc and my dudes are just bad. Die easy, cant hold objectives , can push stuff off objectives. Bad magic and top of that the models l initialy bought were the ones l liked. Imagine my suprise after spending 500$ and painting 1200 points of stormcast infantry to find out that sacrosancts and evocators are real bad. Wouldn't advice anyone to pick up stormcast eternals unless they don't care about fun playing . Double so , if they can't quickly rebuy an army.
