ATTENTION To everyone that placed a special order for a Gearhead t-shirt in uncommon sizes or colors, other than what I keep in stock. They finally came in today! The shop sent their apologies for taking so long. They had a large event going on that put them behind schedule. I thank you for your patience. I'm separating and packaging them right now. I'll get them in the mail tomorrow or Saturday and you'll receive your shirt in 6-10 days.

Congrats on the upcoming events. I think taking the youtube channel into a full shop business will work out for you especially having those tuning classes under your belt.You have alot of support from many outlets.Keep on wrenching!

+Torched T/A Entertainment Thanks brotha! I hope that all helps out. I've still got a lot more to learn on tuning. That class only applied to the Holley system and was mainly just familiarization with it's abilities. I now need to find an actual tuning class or at least time to sit down and figure it out. lol But it should all work out. Keep on Wrenchin brotha!

+86allaboutcars Awesome man! Get at it! One thing though, have you considered using a 4L80E? Its the same as a th400, but it has over drive. It'd be a strong trans to have behind the diesel in a heavy truck. The 700r4s aren't known to handle much power put through them, unless they've been upgraded internally, which usually runs about $1200. the only catch on the 80e is that you may have to find a way to adapt either its computer to allow it to shift or convert it to a manual valve body some how. Just something that I thought I'd throw out there for you to consider.

+AGearHead4Life I have a brand new 6l80 transmission out of a 2014 Savana 3500 complete with harness and computer how difficult would it be to put in and make it work
@AGearHead4Life
@AGearHead4Life 8 жыл бұрын
+86allaboutcars The 4l80e would bolt right up, but the 6l80e will take some modification since I'd bet the convert spacing will be a little different. But the big thing is that the 6l80e will likely need a more complex way to control the trans vs the 4l80e.
@86allaboutcars
@86allaboutcars 8 жыл бұрын
+AGearHead4Life ok. well i will sell this trans and locate a 4l80e. can the pcm be stand alone in the truck since its a diesel no ecm and will only be controlling the trans?
@AGearHead4Life
@AGearHead4Life 8 жыл бұрын
+86allaboutcars Don't sell it yet. Do some more research and make sure of all of your options. I know that they do make a stand alone trans TCM, but I've not looked into them much. What I'd do is find out what they did in the early 90's when they started using the 80es. There's got to be a way around having a TCM. I believe they used 80es behind the diesels in the military HUMMERS. too. I don't think there's a trans controller there. As you see, I don't have the answer, but I know that you can make it happen.

+hermen lomas Thanks brotha! I expect it to be rough, long hours and stressful for at least a year, but I believe that if I just decide that is what I am going to do and there's not another option, then that's what I'll do. lol I mean, I love doing this and all, but there's a lot more to it to making a living with it. Getting the word out to gain customers is one thing and YT may help me in that area, but I think my customer service is what'll really be the winner for me. Good to hear from you, it had been a little while. Sounds like you're having some fun with that stall converter. Consider an auxiliary trans cooler, if you don't already have one. The higher stall will generate more heat. Seats look great! Congrats on the EAS.

you can delay shifting by adjusting the tv cable. for example all the way forward it's in fail safe mode & shifts @ higher rpm if you don't mind to burn gas.
@AGearHead4Life
@AGearHead4Life 8 жыл бұрын
+jasonmushersee Are you referring to a cable like on a 700r4? My trans doesn't have a cable. It's an electronically controlled 4l80e behind a 5.3 LS motor. Thanks for looking out though!

Thank you Albert and thank you for your service! You know that weird transition feeling then. Luckily I've transitioned out once before when I got out of the Marines to try out civilian life. lol But I'm sure, it'll still be an adventure once again, especially now that I have 3 children and a wife with me. But anyway, next time you see me, hit the horn, I'm a gearhead through and through. I love this stuff. Let me know if you have any questions or maybe I can point your towards a video that would be more what youre looking for. One thing that I can say is that all of the videos here on my channel are organized into playlists. So if you click on my name it'll take you to my channel. Then from there, it'll give you an option to view video playlists. Good luck!

+AGearHead4Life will do man. Yeah, the transition is definitely weird. You never know how you should act around civilians, lol. It does get better though as I'm sure you know from the first time around. I'll go check out your Facebook page now. Im sure I'll have plenty of things that I could use some advice on with this truck. Working on an old school v8 was a big change from working on imports. I keep trying to make things harder than they should be with this thing, lol. I'll get there though.
@AGearHead4Life
@AGearHead4Life 8 жыл бұрын
Yea man, that's the common problem, IMO. It seems to be natural and very common for guys to "make things harder than they should be" or at least look at it that way. This is one thing that I try to break in my videos. We often overthink it. Just jump on it and make it happen, is the approach that I go for. It'll get done some how. lol

Seats look good. Can't wait to hear the in-depth report on the 3000 stall converter. My truck is a dog off the line, but I am worried about side effects and having fuel mileage plummet if I go the loose converter route. My truck is a daily driver.
@AGearHead4Life
@AGearHead4Life 8 жыл бұрын
+1kings1918 My truck is a daily driver also, but I think that I could have gone a little smaller for the purpose of this truck. It's not horrible, but I try to dial things in perfectly. I'm also not sure how this stall will pull a trailer. We'll soon see though. Also an important thing to know is that this stall is a "Tight" design and not loose like you'd have in a racing stall. This means that under normal easy driving you can barely tell that the stall is even there, if any at all. BUT once you actually put a load on it or punch it, it'll then stall up to RPM like designed. I haven't been able to track mileage like I'd like to, but I haven't really notice a change, I'm sure there may be some.

@1kings1918 8 жыл бұрын
+AGearHead4Life Thank you.
@AGearHead4Life
@AGearHead4Life 8 жыл бұрын
+AGearHead4Life I went 3-3200k on the stall because many people said that should be the smallest one should get. It's not bad at all, but I'd like to see what a 2500 would have done compared to this one. I'm trying to keep this truck mild. People aiming for the purpose of only speed are doing great with 3600+ stalls.
@AGearHead4Life
@AGearHead4Life 8 жыл бұрын
+1kings1918 It's going to be interesting trying to find a way to capture how the stall is in my truck. You can kind of get an idea of how it drives in this video, when I was driving around showing how the lights looked. but a good daytime video with slow pulls and hard pulls while monitoring the RPM and speed may make for a good video.
@1kings1918
@1kings1918 8 жыл бұрын
+AGearHead4Life 2500 is also what I was thinking. That combined with a swap from 3.23 to 3.73 should perk it up down low..

Glad to hear your coming back to the Alamo city. The car guy community could you a man such as yourself. Been fallowing you for quite some time now. Came on board at about the start of the squirter project. Your down to earth DIY approach is vary inspiring motivating. Had no idea your family included 2 other rug rats. I remember the first time I saw Sky on camera she was sitting on stool by the dr side frt wheel Camaro and you asked her what she was doing and she replied like you didn't have good sense "cleaning the wheeels!". I just had to laugh . Her tone said (oh daddy you know exactly what I'm doing Silly". The fact that you get as much done as you do considering the demands on your time; makes feel even more lazy. Good luck on the new chapter in your life. I sub to over 100 channels but yous is 1 of only 4; I make it a point to check for new videos.

+roger depew wow, thank you Roger! That means a lot man. I'm blown away. Yea, until the Power Tour videos, I tried my best to keep personal things like where I live and my family out of the videos and just focus on the projects. I'm not sure why, but just to be safe I guess. I'm now considering bringing them into the picture. I can't think of a solid reason not to yet. Plus, I often find that I could use a camera man and I think that my oldest daughter, Skyy, might have the skills for it. Yea, I've got three girls; Skyy, Starr and Summer and I raise them like boys. Its funny that you mention getting stuff done. Last week, I finally learned what "overwhelmed" really is. My wife also has a permanent illness that requires me to take care of the kids often. That means I'm responsible for moving us back to TX and getting this house sold. I guess I had too much on my shoulders without even realizing it. So, I had a little melt down last week. I was fine once I figured out what was going on and got my to-do list prioritized. All I know is that life is short. Too short to waste any of it being mad or not chasing your dreams. So I stay away from negative people and spend all of my free time chasing dreams. I feel that the opportunity to do things that we love is a gift that we shouldn't take for granted. A day off of work is that opportunity to live out our passion. I wasted many years of weekends drunk before noticing that drinking had taken away my passion of working on cars. I was always too hung over to wrench. I quit drinking September of 2012 (LS Fest) and that is when I was given back my passion. I'm thankful for every minute that I get to wrench.You know, I've never gotten to tell that on the internet yet. I'm going to have to share this on my blog page. Thanks!

Thanks Shawn! That decision all depends on you and your goals. I love the 5.3 and it does plenty for my goals. I also can't stand it when people decide that they only want a 6.0, but want it cheap. So they spend years hunting for one and never build their project. They could have just slapped a 5.3 in there and enjoyed it. It all depends on the project, budget and what's available.

+AGearHead4Life they really mean well to help you out, and my advice is just don't write it like its an evaluation or an award. An NCO I worked with showed me his resume and I told him seriously you need to remove "Responsible for over 1.1 million dollars in equipment with no shortfalls or loss of equipment". Unless you are looking for work in a warehouse then scratch it and use that space for other things you have done! If you can get your certs you can always find work at any dealership till you can get your business off the ground. Not sure what you did in the Corps but that work will translate to other jobs in and throughout Texas. One of my Soldiers had to take up work as a rough neck, he loves it!
@AGearHead4Life
@AGearHead4Life 8 жыл бұрын
+cw2lido That makes sense! A resume shouldn't be the same as an NCOER. Noted and thank you. I do believe that it'll be a good idea to have a resume built for just in case, but from what I can imagine, I may never have to use it. Unless a resume is something that a bank would want to see with a business plan, should I need to request a lone. IDK I'm a NOOB to owning a small business, but I'm sure I'll figure it out learning the hard way, like I usually choose to do. lol I was master ASE certified at one point. I just need to take the tests again, so that should be an issue. I'm not sure how much those certs matter in a custom automotive shop, but like you said, the certs would be there for just in case I had to pursue employment for any reason. In the Marines, I was a field wireman in Communications, basic stuff. Right now, I'm seriously ready to live out of a cardboard box to launch this business. That would keep my over head low and help to make the business a success. The only issue is that my kids wouldn't fit well in that box. Luckily, we have living supportive parents that they should be able to stay with while I live in the cardboard box to launch the business. This is my mentality right now. lol

+AGearHead4Life I know the issue is probably the same as mine, a family to support! When I got out my eyes were really open to a cut throat world I wasn't ready for. I wanted to go to a reputable tech school so I could use my hands but food, clothes, and mandatory health care makes me put those dreams on hold.

Have you figured out the best setup for increasing towing capacity? I've got a lowered '78, and it's probably a bit too low as sometimes my new control arms scrape on tall curbs, and my exhaust with a passenger. I've made the truck extremely stiff to handle like a dream around turns, but this causes a lot of "bouncing" in the rear and I occasionally hit the axle on the frame. You think helper bags and some traction bars would work? Can you use both? I'm 19 and my truck is turning out pretty killer, but being 19 I don't know everything. Also, if you could provide pictures as to how the inside hood release works, that'd be pretty cool as I want to do that conversion before paint.
@AGearHead4Life
@AGearHead4Life 8 жыл бұрын
I've noticed that the control arms hit a lot when you use more than a 2" drop spring. It puts the arm at a weird angle. Yea, helper bags would greatly help for towing, just like it would for any half ton truck. This is why I plan to add them soon. If you're that low, you may consider C-notching your frame to give more clearance.

some great work and projects you are doing. I highly appreciate the stuff you have shared. Great motivation. I too have just 1 day a week to work on my mistresses (my wife's word) - sometimes an evening or two here and there. Things just take so long to do - maybe I am getting old. But your ideas really help pushing through. Got my low/high fixtures installed, with their standard lamps. Will do the LEDs in the future. Question: are there similar fixtures (with H4 replaceable lamps) for the high beam with the 2 prong connectors? I found a source for them but with the H1 lamp and a weird connection which I don't know how to handle yet. Thanks man

+norsk54472 Thanks man! Glad to hear your feedback and yea, I feel like things are taking too long lately and wondering if its my age. lol But it sucks! I think that it may have more to do with the responsibilities that I have these days. When I was young, I had no responsibilities, so I could just stay up all night to finish whatever project that I wanted to. lol On the high beam fixtures, I'd bet that there are. Now that I think of it, what is the difference in the housings? Could you just put the same ones that I used has low beams in the high beam spot also. Just aim them differently? I'd have to look into that more later on.

+AGearHead4Life Now that is a great idea! use the same high/low assembly for the high only one, and then re-wire the connector if needed or some such. High goes on, then the high turns on, no low. Yeah, that's the ticket

THere's always lots of options on how you could do it. On my first one, I put an in-line high pressure fuel pump version of the Walbro 255. Just spliced it in with rubber hose and doubled up high pressure hose clamps, not regular hose clamps. The best way on a C10, in my opinion, is to convert to a rear mounted fuel tank, like a K5 tank. This is on my list of things to do.

Well I received my OTC Injector cleaner, but I failed to realize that I needed an adapter for the test spigot to the OTC hose. Do you remember which adapter was used for the OTC? it looks from the OTC reference book a 45 (OTC #549578) or 31 (otc #518542) adapter, schrader fitting, 7/16x20 but isn't it suppose to be metric?
@AGearHead4Life

Ah I like that idea of the pressure tester. The OTC cleaner came with a reference book and the item number above (OTC part numbers ) were on their adapter page and I looked up in the book for chev silverado. Option One: $34 for the hose, Option two: $24 for the 90-degree adapter then $11 shipping from www.otcparts.com I am trying the 90 adapter, but will find a pressure tester (Harbor freight supposely has one for $20) and try your solution. I was going to fire my stand up today but discovered I needed that adapter - darn. it's close

Hello Juday Hajri! It sounds like you've got a big project ahead of you. I'm not sure where to start on suggestions. The story of adapting a 5.3 to another vehicle is a long one. @AGearHead4Life
@AGearHead4Life 8 жыл бұрын
+Tony Maldonado I'd recommend mounting a fuel tank in the rear, under the bed near that bumper with an in-tank walbro 255 fuel pump. For the radiator, I'd just run a 454 style radiator, they're massive. Dual fans will depend on how pretty you want it to look. I usually just grab junk yard dual fans. they flow well and are dirt cheap. But if you want it to look pretty, you can hit up summit, LMCTruck, or another site and see what they have to offer.

an LS2 cam will wake it up some, but you there'll be no notice of an other than stock cam in it. Idle sounds stock, but you'll have a ~25hp bump in power. You'll also need a front cover with cam sensor in it and the right cam gear. Depending on how aggressive you want to go, I'd recommend either the TSP 220r like is in my truck or the 224r. You'll need the springs and pushrods to go with it.

But as you probably already know, a good stall can make a world of difference. Keep in mind that if your looking for a street/strip stall or a race stall. People don't care that its been converted, as long has it's guaranteed to hold and it doesnt have a reputation for the frame failing. People just want to drive a short bed. People mainly care about looks. they don't care how it happened, as long as it's dependable and looks good. lol

Thank you! Cool deal man. The cost of doing a swap like this can vary a lot depending on what options you chose and how much you can do yourself. It usually costs as much as having your old engine and trans rebuilt though. I roughly guesstimate $2500 for everything, including the trans. I did my first one for under $2k. But there are a lot of optional parts that'll pull you in and greatly raise the cost of a swap.

+Edgar Sosa Yea, I hope they can get me a reply soon, because I'd really like to get some myself. A lot of people have been asking for them. I waited a long time for the last shop that I used to make some, but they fell through. So now I'm really anxious for this shop to make them. The good thing is that I know this shop will make a much better one, once they're able to. Cant wait myself.

say bro you mentioned you wanted to tow but your trans has a 3000 stall in it. You are going to trash your converter trying to tow anything over 700 pounds. FYI
@AGearHead4Life
@AGearHead4Life 8 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I knew that the stall wouldn't be the best move for hauling stuff, but I don't haul stuff too often. I'll double check with Chris at Circle D about this. Thanks for looking out.

Yea I deal with tci often and have a 3k stall in my c10. But I asked about towing. And the told me towing anything wasn't good with this high of a stall.
@AGearHead4Life
@AGearHead4Life 7 жыл бұрын
Yea, I asked Circle D before purchasing about towing. They asked how often and what I'd be pulling. I answered once a year and towing my Camaro 15 hours. They said it should be fine, but you could tell that they were suggesting that towing wasnt the best idea. BTW I drove this truck 15 hours to TX a few months ago with a pretty heavy load in the bed. Its doing ok so far. I'm about to two my Camaro that same trip in 3 weeks. We'll see if I kill it I guess.. lol Luckily the weather is cool. maybe that'll help.

i was wondering wat happened with you , figured you where moving or at least been send out somewhere so you going to leave the militairy , theres an update , will be a chainge i bet , good thing is you dont have to move around anymore and arent in as mush danger springing leaks, when you in hostile territory , the wife prolly be happyer about that too might be able to start a small custom shop behind the new home working a few hours a week or so next to a regulair dayjob doing conversions or sell conversionkits i would start small and see if it hits before pumping more money in it .... i mean there a LOT of these shops around and going full on intoo a project like that is a good way to land in the poorhouse if the concept doesnt catch on quick enough you allready have a nice logo and i think a good name for the company : gearhead4life enterprices web based shops (ebay/ amazon) are interesting they dont cost a lot to start up and you can basicly work the hours youre free from where ever you are based you can even have the manufacturer ship directly to the customer and not have anything in stock and dont have to deal with the delivery guys think customer service will be an important part in making the company successfull (good legal backup prolly as whell.... we are talking court happy United States here ) for the rear helpersprings i seen something on semi trucks thats a second leafspringpackage sitting on top of the first on hanging freely under an extra set of bumpers on the frame , it only get harsher when you put a load in the bed , it might clunk a little too on deep dips on the suspension images4.hellotrade.com/data4/TI/TF/MY-7430114/truck-leaf-spring-250x250.jpg should have room for it in between the stock leafspring and the frame they just mount higher up on the frame then the original hangers if you want to go airbag i suggest to mount them in front of the rearaxle on the inside of the frame this company sells some nice parts and kits for that www.gulf-coast-customs.com/Rear-air-bag-brackets-Trucks_c_192.html www.gulf-coast-customs.com/Slam-Specialties_c_74.html www.gulf-coast-customs.com/SMC-_c_79.html www.gulf-coast-customs.com/Standard_c_183.html www.gulf-coast-customs.com/Viair_c_140.html some of this stuff some switches relays and some airline should make you totally selfleveling , like the intake ecu gauges combo seen another idea where they use two enginestands coupled together a while back www.tomyang.net/cars/enginestand11.jpg makes it a little stronger though harder to get the engine out of it , since im running the inline 6 i figured it would be safer then hanging it off one end , can test transmissions this way too , prolly even be able to hook up a waterbrake dynosetup

+watahyahknow lol Yea, it will be nice to be home and not moving anymore. The wife is excited and the kids miss their grandparents. That's basically what I'm planning. A shop behind the house, but actually going full force. I plan to learn and expand more by building a website as well.

i had to change the fuel pump on my old r1500 and i just dropped the tank..no bed removal..but a bitch to do!
@AGearHead4Life
@AGearHead4Life 8 жыл бұрын
+hittin-low_150db+ Yea, it sucks. I've done it twice without moving the bed, but I messed up the fuel hoses both times. Wound up cutting and extending them. When you pull the bed, you don't have to do that. Either way, it sucks. It'll be much easier having the sending unit in a place that is easier to access.

+hittin-low_150db+ Yep! that's one option and the most common one done. I'll either do the K5 Blazer fuel tank or just find a plastic one like off of a Camaro and make it fit.

+AGearHead4Life oh nice! there a dime a dozen...I went ahead and put a fuel cell in the bed behind the cab(last summer)..after I had to take the tank out cause it clogged up the sock on the pump with rust...so I said screw it and mounted a 10 gallon fuel cell in the back👍

+AGearHead4Life saw a video one guy did (it was a newer truck) to replace his fuel pump. Remove all the bolts on the tank side and then loosen the bolts on the other side. Then lift the tank side of the bed and place 2x4s as supports given him enough space to work on the tank.
