The fact that Will managed to get Gemma wine on such an awful planet, simply because it would've made her happy, no matter how terrible that wine ended up tasting, was something that obviously meant a lot to her. So much so, that, a few episodes ago, when Gemma's served the wine at the restaurant, she starts to cry. She didn't forget him, and wouldn't have forgiven herself if she'd left him there to die. A beautiful detail I missed the first time around. Love. This. SHOW!

In case you didn't make that connection, the portal opening that they shot the harpoon at was probably the one when Fitz broke into the containment chamber on the other side (since Coulson mentioned that it hadn't liquified again between then and Jemma being sucked in), so while their bottle didn't go through, it might have been what pushed the dust that Fitz found into the portal. Anyways, that was definitely a "normal" moon-based opening, which is why they could predict the when and where. The first time the portal was opened manually using the machine was when Fitz shot the flare, which they spotted by pure coincidence (due to the timing lining up with the rare sunrise that had them go to the surface). After that, the one time Daisy opened the portal was when Fitz jumped in and pulled Jemma out.

Trying to avoid spoilers (I've seen it) but I always enjoy hearing theories. For those watching along for the first time, why do you think that thing is wearing the astronaut's stuff? Presumably if it's local it hardly needs environmental protection like that to move around unless it's naturally waterborne or similar.
@dondumitru7093

-- SPOILERS -- -- Avoiding meta-explanations, 'it' messes with people's heads. 'It' makes people see things. -- Allowing meta-explanations, the writers wanted 'it' to be 'spooky' but didn't put in a lot of thought at this point into exactly how 'it' worked. Later portrayals of 'it', once they figured out the story for the second half of the season, required a retcon.
@consolescrub4031
@consolescrub4031 Ай бұрын
@@dondumitru7093 I admit, I was more trying to provoke thought in anyone watching along for the first time but that's a interesting explanation and I suppose I should expect the majority of people to have seen it already. Spoilers for this season below Unless there's something I'm forgetting from a later season, I don't recall any need for a retcon. Presumably what we see here is literally one of the astronaut's suit being worn along with --spoilers again--- the astronaut's body. On the meta level helmets where you can't see the face are generally unnerving (for example, Silence in the Library from Doctor Who) and it means the production team can save time and money on effects and casting rather than committing to a face immediately. On a non-meta level the question of why the suit can be answered with multiple reasons. We know 'it' is intelligent and capable of committing psychological warfare to the point of imitating an ally. (One could argue the cloak was used because 'it' was unfamiliar with Jemma and vagueness may serve as a better tool whereas 'it' associates Will with the astronauts.) Additionally, the suit serves as containment considering 'it' has likely been in possession of that form for at least 13 years and while it may be able to feed from local organisms enough to sustain itself, it's expanded metabolism is too much to repair injuries so that astronaut is likely not looking so hot right now. To my knowledge, 'it' doesn't provide visions, just indoctrination or outright possession.
@doomse150
@doomse150 Ай бұрын
Spoilers It makes sense if you consider that one of "it's" strategies for surviving seems to be to imitate whoever it possesses and try to pass as human whenever possible (see it posing as Will when Fitz arrives). Considering the ways in which the astronauts died (fallen of a cliff, burned to death, axe to the head/throat) none of their bodies would look alive enough to fool anyone, so going for a bulky astronaut suit and a helmet with a visor that isn't see-through is the best option to keep up the facade.
@consolescrub4031
@consolescrub4031 Ай бұрын
@@doomse150 I agree entirely. I mostly just wanted to get people considering the implications of what's going on. Spoilers for the season below For example, wearing an outfit shows a degree of awareness but might just be needed to physically contain a deteriorating specimen. Deliberately wearing the outfit and outwards appearance of a trusted individual indicates a much higher level of mental faculty. It's one thing to know there's a monster out there, it's quite another to know the monster is smart.

I'm really glad you understood what happened between Jemma and Will, because as you can imagine very few FitzSimmons shippers reacted to this relationship detour... well. It never bothered me (as a diehard FitzSimmons shipper), because I had... HOPE (and years of faith in these writers to make it worth it all) 😉 "His name is like your favorite word" - Will 🥺 Lil (Elizabeth) is ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT 😍 And yeah, the planet and the creature are INTRIGUING!

I have such mixed feelings about this episode--like Elizabeth delivered such a powerhouse performance and it's an amazing story of Jemma's survival, but I hate, hate, HATE that they essentially turned it into a love triangle storyline between her, Fitz, and Will. HATE. In a way I feel like it even cheapens Jemma's struggle. But, meh, what can I say, I was just a supremely frustrated Fitzsimmons shipper 😂
@sarahphillips9644
@sarahphillips9644 Ай бұрын
I didn’t like it at first so I understand, but I’ve started to take into account how much anyone would have bonded to someone after spending months alone together. Will has been isolated for years and thought jemma was a hallucination before she hit him. their relationship is based on their shared trauma being trapped on another planet, not jealousy or even baseline attraction. They bond over science, the stars, technology, their former lives, which feels more of way to keep each other sane than flirting. Wills knows Jemma’s in love with Fitz, and they only kiss after their escape attempt fails in every way and jemma has a breakdown. Is it an overdone tripe? Yes. But it was written to show that these are mature adults that complex relationships. !!SPOILERS AFTER THIS!! Fitz is jealous, but still tries to save will, even teaming up with him against Hydra and Ward. Will is a not secretly a terrible person, he’s just a guy that was sent to his death by Malick. Also, Jemma’s a catch, who wouldn’t want to date her? /j

Guessing the writers considered the planet's gravity and core radioactivity as generating heat, with possibly additional gravity effects from the gas giant nearby. That is, assume the writers gave heat any thought at all.

12:31 - *_Intelligent people always talk to themselves: It's the only way they can find intelligent people with whom they may have a simulating conversation...!_* 😜 17:47 - *_Indeed. I don't know if it has changed with time but: For the longest time, this episode was rated in the top 3 episode of the whole AoS series (I think it was #1 for a time). It certainly a huge fan favorite and shows not only how much growth Jemma had prior to getting on the planet (Se1, Ep1 Jemma never would have survived this ordeal; not by a long shot!), but also how much growth she went through while O the planet!_* 18:42 - *_Humm.... A Dyson Sphere is a sphere that surrounds a star/sun, not buried inside a planet. The heat source Will was using in the cave more likely was heat from the planets core, possibly magma; whether that is part of the planet's natural core system or because of the gravitational pull from the planet/moons we saw in the sky would be difficult to say. I think the "planet" they're on is actually a moon of the big planetoid we saw in the sky, doubtful that what they were on was as big as that; unless it is a binary planet (Two planets circling each other; which is also possible)_*
