I have a now-6 year old intact male Akita who went through a phase of reactivity that we successfully overcame as a team. He's now completely trustworthy with dogs and we spend hours per day at the dog park (I'm a canine ethologist). I used absolutely NO correction. It's been an amazing journey of partnership and communication. I think that associating tension from other dogs with play helped a lot. Now he play bows to dogs who challenge him, lol. He struts around the park without a care in the world now, very secure with himself and very stoic and kind toward other dogs, avoiding conflicts, staying out of fights, peeing on everything, wrestling and running. It's a sight to see. :)

This is a great video. I like how you broke it down between being proactive training vs. correcting a behavior. I think too many people (especially with big breeds) use these corrective training collars on and dont really understand how to use them. Thanks for breaking it down and explaining it.

I became accidental owner of akita(our first family dog) after we agreed to foster her for 4 weeks when she was 12mths. The owner wasn't able to take her back and after 4mths he said she can stay with us for good. I did very little training with her but she's been very friendly with all people and children. She's the so happy to see anyone who comes to our house to visit us or my children that is impossible not to fall in love in that dog. But when it comes to meeting other dogs is a different story. She's very excited to see or meet and play with other dogs but she always makes a Alfadog statement first with dominant posture and will try to paw over the other dog to submissive position. If the dog is happy to submit then it's all fine but if the other dog won't then...who knows. I don't trust her around small dogs or cats at all. Just in case I keep her on the lead around small dogs. She looks at them like she would like to eat them even she doesn't like raw meat at all but she killed a rat once in the flash just for fun.

I have two American Akitas ( an absolute bull moose male weighing 140 LBS and a female weighing 105 LBS) and before these 2 American Akitas, I owned 4 Chow Chows (3 males and 1 female (65 to 80 LBS)) and a Basset Hound over the previous 20 years. Whereas only 2 of my 3 male Chow Chows were highly territorial and dog aggressive, both my male and female Akitas are instinctively territorial and same sex dog aggressive and such aggression can come roaring out in 1 second with no warning as they can and will fight another same sexed dog on sight. Because Akitas are silent hunters and fighters, there is usually no verbal warning given to a foe by an Akita before it attacks. Even the best socialized American Akita is not going to turn the other cheek if provoked or challenged - in fact they seem to enjoy a challenge and they can and will win a fight often before you can even react because they will literally explode and attack and kill in seconds with their amazing power, speed and fighting instincts. They will instantly overpower and straddle a canine opponent and grasp the dog by the back of the neck to pin it or kill it depending on the mood of the Akita. So any responsible owner and decent human would do anything to avoid such tragic situations by avoiding dog parks and off-leash activities around other dogs and animals. You can train your Akitas and socialize them, but it will never be enough to overcome their innate genetic programing to fight, hunt and kill as most are like cats such that it does not pay to let your cat sit outside by the bird feeder with the expectation that no birds will be harmed. Think of the Akita as a big hunting cat or a bird of prey and you begin to understand their essence. Yes they are great dogs but perhaps not the best family dog for small kids as they are definitely not pack dogs and they are seldom safe or good in dog parks or in homes with many other pet dogs because many seem to enjoy fighting and some will actively seek out rumbles and even those who are not aggressive will usually play rough and if another dog growls or barks at them, the American Akita may respond with a sudden violent ferocity usually only seen in wild animals. The # 1 trait in an American Akita is their inability to turn the other cheek and tolerate disrespect and/or any form of physical abuse from any dog, animal or human. So never under any circumstances strike one of these dogs in anger as it can and will trigger the dog and these dogs are like the Hulk comic book character, extremely well behaved right up until they "go off" after being triggered. When these dogs attack, it is like witnessing a bear or big cat go all in. It is total shock and awe. These are loving, sensitive, intelligent, playful, gentle souls but make no mistake, when the stuff hits the fan, they will mop the floor with Chow Chows, rottweilers, dobermans, pitbulls and GSDs and just about every other breed commonly found in a dog park or neighborhood running off leash. Their fighting prowess makes chow chows look like angry kittens - these dogs are the real deal and in a league of their own on an instant aggression level akin to a rabid wolf. A 130 LBS to 140 LBS male American Akita will have a massive bear like head shaped like an anvil with a bite force of over 300 PSI attached to a 30 inch neck with legs as thick as baseball bats and such a dog is easily 2 to 4 times stronger than a very fit 200 LBS man and if they are red zoning, they are oblivious to pain and can and will kill another dog or wild pig or coyote(s) in literally just seconds. I have seen mine go after coyotes, run them down and kill them in what seemed like just seconds and I mean it was a horror show and blood bath for the coyotes who were outclassed badly and had no chance. These are what I would call extreme hunter--killers and very much like big cats in terms of how they hunt and ambush and protect their territory with explosively violent lethality. These dogs do not take prisoners and will not back down or cut and run - they will stand their ground and fight no matter how hopeless the odds are. Calling these dogs brave or courageous is an understatement as these dogs have a fighting spirit which is off the charts. Most Akitas behave 99.9% of the time but because they are so strong, fast and powerful, it only takes seconds for such a dog to fill body bags with other aggressive dogs in a dog park. American Akitas are not dangerous if well socialized, leashed, fenced and always handled correctly but in the wrong hands, even a well socialized dog can literally become a hand grenade with the pin pulled in a crowded bar, street party or dog park. These dogs need their space and they will not always tolerate some drunken bar patron with a lit cigarette in his mouth laying hands on them. Many will stop tolerating other same sexed dogs they previously co-existed with as they sexually mature around 8 to 15 months for females and at 18 to 30 months for males. Once they fight another dog, they will not stop and suddenly return to peaceful coexistence. I love my American Akitas but they can be total bullies and assholes to other dogs and they will hunt and kill coyotes, possums, raccoons and other animals on sight. While some people have multiple same sexed Akitas in the same home without issues, most people can only keep two opposite sexed dogs at one time. If you are a commando, this is the dog for you as these dogs are very much like special forces soldiers-as in they are silent and stealthy and innately lethal and have razor sharp hunting and killing instincts such that in combat these dogs are like samurai - absolutely fearless and explosively violent and ferocious. They are very cat like and I would compare them to tame cougars - they can be sweet and affectionate and then one minute later they can be lethal. Their environment and interactions must be always managed and you must maintain situational awareness at all times with these dogs and never let them roam free in public spaces as while they may ignore other dogs initially, if the other dog behaves aggressively, the Akita will engage in a firefight and in my experience American Akitas once provoked do not take prisoners. They don't mess around and 99% of other dogs will have no chance against these dogs. The aggression coupled with their ferocity is something that has to be witnessed to be understood as mere words don't convey just how combustible an American Akita is in combat mode. These are clean odorless dogs who have big bold personalities and many are very talkative but all of them have a darker edgy side to some degree, more or less, such that in the wrong circumstances or in the wrong hands, they can be a disaster. You must be a Commando capable of grappling with such powerful beasts as sometimes verbal commands will not suffice to recall an Akita or cause it to break off conflict. These are great dogs for big tough people who are committed to responsible dog ownership but absolute disasters in the wrong hands. These are not suitable dogs to be walked by children as no child can manage such a dog if things go sideways on a leash walk and another dog comes charging in, the Akita will square up and prepare to do combat and will likely overpower any child's attempts to restrain it. My male can if it so desires literally drag me across the street much like an out-of-control horse ...so giving a 10 year old a 105 to 140 LBS American Akita to walk on a leash unsupervised is a very bad idea as these dogs can be an absolute handful for even the most physically fit adult. You cannot treat these dogs like you would treat a nice tame lab or retriever, as while some Akitas will tolerate strange dogs if they are not aggressive, more will not tolerate any strange dog in their territory and that territory is wherever the Akita happens to be at any given moment. Their territorial ambitions have no boundaries which is why they need to be fenced and leashed (as well as to protect them as many are clueless about streets and vehicular traffic). Akitas will not recognize any territorial limitations on their authority and so they are always like an invading army wherever they go. That said, other than their infrequent propensity for extreme sudden violence, these dogs have few if any faults. If you can handle living with an absolute "tiger of a dog", look no further. Just never forget what the dog is and what it was bred for and don't let down your guard, lose situational awareness or take foolish risks around other dogs and strangers as many of these dogs don't provide for any margin of error. Your first mistake with such a dog can become a homicide crime scene so you have to bring your A game every day. I absolutely love this breed but you need to be fit to own one of these brutes and you need to have a clue about their nature and always assume that your AKITA is not going to like strange animals, cats, or dogs and behave accordingly as to do otherwise is to invite disaster. Many can be socialized to accept most people, but even then these dogs needs to be behind a gate if you have 30 people over for a party or 30 kids playing rough in your yard as these dogs are so protective, many won't allow their owner to dance or hug without joining in or seeking to separate the people. Sounds funny, but these dogs are so big and powerful, they need to be understood and respected at all times. Love them but they are the wrong dog for 98% of people.

Akita can be explosive and generally a balanced breed started with a female 20 years ago we currently have 4 and yeah zero to 60 at times throughout the years. Definitely not first dog material for inexperienced owners but they are the dog for us good pack presence and thankfully never an issue with kids infants or toddlers but your right you should have situational awareness and ability to handle a scuffle in home. Dog parks never an option but a large park and yard rule out the need. Final thoughts yeah can potentially be problematic in reaction to outside activity but maintaining your environment goes along way. Best Regards to all Akita lifers😎👍🇺🇸

Our boy was rescue and was 7 when we got him, he's genuinely afraid of other dogs and he whines and tries to move away. We've had him for4 years now, we think previous owners have shouted at him when he's reacted. Imagine a person is frightened if spiders and they see a spider and are freaking out and your shouting in their face telling them to stop it your then making a stressful situation worse. We found lots of reassuring and praise when he's calm and treat distraction helped. He's a hundred times better than when we got him and doesn't get as stressed any more and whereas in the past he'd be stressed for anything up to an hour after seeing a dog. It helps he's very happy and settled now and 90% of the time he's calm now. They are great dogs and require more work than some breeds but they are so worth it though.

I adopted 2 year old Akita Inu male dog from street.Last owner was alcoholic and most likely abusive to the dog. I have real issues when I walk him, he attacks other dogs instantly and biggest problem is, he attacks people coming by us when we are in walk, snapping and trying to bite hands,legs etc. There is no one outside my family that this dog likes. He is big fluffy good dog in my property ,he sleeps with our cats,play with my kids in very gentle manner and he didint destroy anything so far,not even a hole in garden or chewing stuff.Now he is 4 years old. We use muzzle when we are out and he need to be closed up when we have visitors of any kind . Before Akita I had couple of Dobermans, male and female,we walked without leash,visiting dog parks and crowded places like weddings, party's with 150-300 people with no leash or muzzle ...not a single incident in 14 years they lived. I love this Akita but there is a space in his mind and I can not enter there and correct his behavior.

You just won a new subscriber. My boy is almost 3 years old now and 95% of the time he is nice and sweet and likes people and dogs. I was very strict at the first one and a half years of his life but now I have let go a bit. I will watch your other videos as well to see what I can learn and implement. It is such a great moment to find someone who knows the breed and is all about positive reinforcement but also all about correcting unwashed behaviour. I personally won't use such a collar (also they are forbidden in Austria) but I will try again the 'A A A' it used to work. Another question he seems to have times where he wants to do what I say and please me (especially at home) and times where I just don't really exist in his world (especially outside). How can I get him more interested in me? What can I do to have a stronger relationship where he wants to follow? I've seen it with other Akitas and know it is possible but cannot figure out how. Thank you! 😊

What about when my Akita doesn't initiate any trouble? Other dogs get scared of him (males only) they start barking like crazy at him , while he stands there staring at them or ignores them completely. Some owner try to come near us, then Hatchiko (my AA) will start wanting to push and growl with his chest (no snarling, no teeth baring and no biting not barking). I do my nest to move away, which I eventually do. I am sure this isn't his mistake as he is such a polite and loving dog.. Please advise.

Sorry but it is your dog's nature to be top dog at all costs and he will not put up with any other dog showing any dominance whatsoever. You cannot expect to treat an Akita like any other dog; most cannot be socialized unless they are brought up with a dog of the opposite gender but they are good with cats it seems. Right from having my Akita we were the target of every terrier and ratty small dog in this town - they are so intimidated by the sight or smell of an Akita that a lot of smaller dogs will start aggressing and barking. They only do this because they are on the lead and know that your dog is too, believe me, if the Akita is off the lead every dog will run like hell - few dogs are that dumb but in the street it is a different matter! I have even walked past people's houses and had their dogs go nuts through the door or window due to smelling my dog - they really are the alpha dog breed and other dogs know it and are afraid. Trouble is that your Akita will sense this and take the absolute mickey if you allow it to. They enjoy making other dogs afraid . Have a good harness on your Akita - forget a choke collar as he is going to wait until your back is turned then slip out when it is slack and deffo do not use an extender lead otherwise you will end up on your ass after the dog has waited until your attention is elsewhere then he will run rings round your legs and everyone else's. My dog is so clever that I had to really take time and think on how to make him WANT TO BEHAVE. it really is all about that with an Akita . You can't bully this dog to master him, it really is a labour of love. The other thing is TIRE THAT DOG OUT!! A young Akita needs a lot of exercise including off leash running. My dog is a lot older now but when he was younger we used to walk around 4 hours a day and when I sensed him getting restless I would take him down my local golf course after midnight when no other dogs are around and let him run run run. It is a full time job this dog and you need to know what your dog is capable of and what a little sod he can be just for fun!! If the dog senses you are panicked he is going to really take advantage I found it easier to actively avoid other dogs until he was around 6 years old when he calmed down a bit but that stage when he became sexually mature, oooh la la !!! It was a nightmare not gonna lie. I had to really shape up myself tbh and get much stricter with the dog..

The problem I have right now is that he is happy to be with me /us (1,5 yrs. old akita). He respects our personal space as he wants his personal space to be respected as well. He can go off-leash in my office and heal no problem, basically since day one when we got him (1 months ago). However, walking depends very much on his mood. He follows for most of the time, however, he can completely mind his own business and doesn't care much about a short snap or anything yet... When it comes this particular topic, is there a step three? He is totally locked on, not usually aggressive, but other dogs are mostly afraid of him. It takes a while to regain his focus to me (which is rewarded). Apart from this, I have met a lot of dogs in my life, but none that has been for most of it so well behaved, calm and communicative like him.

How does one gain trust & respect with the Akita dog breed?
@outlawJosieFox
@outlawJosieFox 3 жыл бұрын
You absolutely have to be boss with this dog otherwise you are not going to be able to control it. Have very clear boundaries about what behaviour you will tolerate and be consistent with everything you do. I found that excluding the dog from my company worked as a punishment when training a young Akita. They are seriously sociable and always want to be in the room with you so shutting him out into a dark corridor alone provides all the punishment you will ever need with this or any dog tbh. Never allow your Akita to jump up at people because that puppy behaviour is going to be dangerous when the dog is full grown. My Akita could push most adults over if he wanted to and he has a body slam technique when allowed a run up which would take any dog or human off their feet! He is a hairy tank and zero to top speed in an instant! You won't be catching that dog if he gets away from you so a good harness is essential I used a muzzle to punish my Akita when he started aggressing on other dogs in the street and that worked because he hated it but again it has to be absolutely consistent.. It quickly becomes no fun at all if you can't walk down the street without your dog going crazy and they are strong dogs and it is tiring to have to constantly battle an Akita trying to get off leash believe you me! You cannot pander to this dog and you will be doing the dog no favours if you are soft and do not follow through. Akitas respect people who give them clear boundaries, it makes them feel safer to know how far they can go. An Akita that you yourself are afraid of is a dangerous dog and could lead to someone getting hurt. This dog has to respect you and a soft and pliable personality will fail with this breed. You need to be the samurai the dog deserves.

Could you help me? My akita is a female and doesn't really heed commands. She got off her leash twice recently and I'm trying to understand why she runs off instead of listening to me or my girlfriend (who she normally listens to more)

I have a almost 3 year old female Akita Brooklyn. She doesn't like younger children. We know that and keep her from them. But today she lunged and bit my 16 year old in the face. She did break skin on his nose and his neck. My son as always been loving and sweet to her and I don't understand why she snapped and did this? Brooklyn did also snap at my 20 year old about 6 months ago. He was messing with her while she was playing with a treat toy. Her face after she did it was a look of "I can't believe I just did that" and she went straight to him and put her head against him. So I don't think she is doing it out of anger. It is like a momentary snap..any suggestions? I don't want to keep her locked away from my family.

So is that reactivity or same sex aggression? Or are they the same thing ? See my Akita mix is OK with the females but not males like him self how ever if I say 1 command he will sit and be quiet but if that other male dog comes back and close he will snap again until the other dog gives a good distance, so am not sure what to do from here 🤔

Well... I didn't choose an Akita (mix), he just ended up being my dog,, but I must have been very fortunate or I managed to do something somewhat right. I hadn't had dogs more than transient situations (pup sitting, or care while finding a permanent home) since I was a farm kid. I second hand rescued a litter of puppies that had been taken from their mother too early (around a month old). The story I got was ... off somewhat.... the claim was that the mother was a Shetland Sheepdog. Uhmmm. Had a DNA test. 1% Sheltie. He (70#~)has more Chihuahua than Sheltie! (18 breeds, 32% Akita - his name is Azimutt, btw. Joke from when I worked in mapping...). Anyway, I made sure from early on he got play dates with one of his littermates, and there's been a few other playmates since. Also I had him neutered ASAP (many reasons, but the reputed gender aggression being one of them). This seems to have worked out. He even tries to make friends with cats,, even has a couple cat friends. He does have a high prey drive. I do have to tell him to settle down sometimes. In someway, what you described sorta relates to what I think is a case of pup needing a job. He seems to want something to be his duty. Like working breeds are inclined to need.

I have a female, Asia who was never aggressive with other dogs until she was attacked by 2 husky mixes. She was on a dog run at the time in my yard. She wasn't the one to come out worse for wear, the other dogs were. Unfortunately, ever since then she will attack dogs if she somehow gets loose. She will let them go once they submit. I'm afraid she will do this one day to a dog who won't. When she's on lead she may react but I'm able to refocus her. Akitas are very rare where I live and are lumped into the"vicious dog" group and few groomers, trainers, veterinary offices want to deal with them. Any magic tricks up your sleeve Will?

Hi Will! I had a situation with my akita female yesterday and I am a bit scared of the future, but will definitely want to do something about it. My akita bite my dad yesterday (in the hand and the leg) fortunately he is fine, but it was a very scary moment. My parents are not usually at my home, so I think my dad cannot be considered as one in her circle of trust. Let me describe the situation so you can get an idea… she was lying on the floor at the door of my house, which is the place where she eats and it is the place that she usually guards. My dad wanted to pet her, and while doing it, she bit my dad… first in the hand, then in the leg. I was kind of close, and I managed to free my dad from her. Putting her dong and grabbing her by the neck until she stopped barking angrily to me. My akita has 14 months, what should I do from now on? I am scared if this happens while I am far away and also with kids. She is normally friendly with other people from her circle of trust coming, but always scared of new comers… I can see that she is afraid of them and takes a lot of time for her to be friendly with them. What should I do? Thanks a lot!!

Did you socialize her at all as a puppy? Maybe it hurt right where he petted her? An Akita isn't a childrens dog - in the sense that it requires respect. If the Akita doesnt get a place to be where the kids and others can't be, it might continue the behavior. But back to the situation with your dad; was she surprised? Did he let her sniff him? Did she growl / lay her ears back before biting? Was there food in her bowl? Why would you allow strangers to enter a space you know she guards?

There is a big difference between American Akitas and Akita Inu, People, especially Americans can't really differentiate those too. Your profile picture is a Japanese one and the picture in this video was an American one, about which breed are you talking about? They are really different in behavior.

I really do not think you have what it takes to control Akita,one of most agressive dogs ever. Akita needs firm hand and very experienced handler, not a clown or guy who thinks "Hatchiko" is cute. Otherwise that breed is disaster . Absolute disaster.
@robertsvihorik9033
@robertsvihorik9033 4 жыл бұрын
Akita is not about the firm hand but about your personality, attitude and your dog handling skills. I agree selling of this breed widely is unfortunate decision. It should be stopped to public. It's just for people who know what they are buying. Akita inu breed is a treasure.

I have had three Akitas all male each very different its all up to me how to react to a situation. When a dog is dog aggressive you act accordingly. I don't think it is something you can train out of them. You learn to deal with it accordingly.
