Training a puppy not to bite is one thing, this out of control puppy blue heeler comes to the Upstate Canine Academy in need of serious help. Professional dog trainer Tom Davis works with this young dog's owners to go over the steps needed to regain control over this puppy. Step by step we peel the layers off and get to the core of this dogs issues. Lack of guidance, structure and discipline in this dog's life has created what you see in this dog training video.

I met this dog the day after this was taken, in our training session with them and I can say she acted like a whole new dog in just a day with Tom. She walked perfectly next to us and our dog and with no parking or reactivity to us. Pretty amazing to see what he does in person and how quickly the methods work 👍🏼

I have a 9 month puppy who I trained with the "positive reinforcement" method and ignored all of his bad behaviors and it did NOT work. I've been using this balanced method that I found on your KZbin channel for a week, and I'm already seeing such huge results! Thank you!

Just watched this Victoria nutter from UK distracting (oh, sorry, “redirecting) a nasty little hell-dog from biting the face off a toddler with a food-impregnated “snuffle mat.” No actual collar, or correction, just, “let’s hope we don’t have a facial wound or severed artery by using..the snuffle mat..”. I can’t watch that garbage..there’s minutes and minutes of touchy-feely “this is what we hope to accomplish bla bla” and probably 50 hours of video to get one clip of the dog finally eating off the “snuffle mat” instead of charging the toddler, then the dog goes right back to doing what it was before..

LOVE this video! We are a foster family for puppies and have taken in multiple litters (over 40 pups) in the past 2 years. The last litter we took in was 4 girls and they were just like this, it was extremely difficult to get them placed into forever homes with dedicated people who understand continued training and socialization is a MUST and can not be skipped! We still have one who has not been adopted and we continue to work on her basic obedience and stranger danger insecurities. Your videos have given us so much helpful information and different perspectives of behavior issues.

Hi Tom i just wanted to send a quick comment, i couldnt agree more with you in regards to some taking the soft approach vs the way you deal with it through discipline but also as much positive affirmation as soon as the dog responds to or chooses to follow the direction the owner is giving. Great work absoloutley love your videos and i would love to be in the states and meet you. Unfortunatley im in AUSTRALIA, Really wanting to have shadow see me as his world and follow my directions because hes been taught to.. Keep your love going for helping these beautiful family members in our lives. TOM DAVIS your AMAZING!!!!!!

As always Tom, another great video! I like the saying "If you don't disagree with a behavior, then that means you agree with it". So if your dog is going crazy at the end of the leash (pulling, barking etc) and you don't correct the dog, in essence what your are saying (by not doing anything) is good job, I like you pulling and barking on the end of the leash. So if the dog isn't immediately corrected, the behavior will continue and will likely escalate. If you really pay close attention to the constructive criticism Tom provides to the female owner (on posture and body language etc), you see immediate changes in the dogs behavior. That is rewarding to see and should show people how fast our dogs behavior can change when we do:) I applaud the owners for continuing to find help for their dog!

Spatial/Body pressure drills with an E-Collar would change this dogs life and their relationship forever. It's amazing what happens when the owner communicates "back off" or "give me space" to the dog. The dog almost immediately says, oh shit, sorry, I thought you needed my protection, I guess not, ok, I'll chill. As a person who has been in this industry for almost my entire adult life and as an owner of multiple dog daycares, grooming salons and training centers, I can assure you that very few people in the world see more dogs and dog owners than I do or dog trainers for that matter. Tom is as good as I've ever seen in the industry. Great job Mr. Davis!!!

Hey Tom, man what can I say but you are the best dog / human trainer I have ever seen. I have learnt so much from watching your videos. To change a dogs life from being unruly to calm and keeping it from being euthanized is super awesome I too would love to do what you do. It is my passion to work with dogs and save them from being euthanize. I have saved one so far she is a pitbull that nobody could control but I have got her on the right track. She is such a wonderful dog. Her name is BABY GIRL and she is my baby for sure. I would love to chat with you one day and even shadow you. I dont want to train for a profit. My profit is if I can save a dogs life and give them a quality of life that's more than money for me. You are truly right, THERE ARE NO BAD DOG... keep up with the great videos Thanks a million. PEACE

I've got an Aussiedoodle and every trainer we've used has always gone with the just ignore the dog when they're doing something bad and I've never been a fan of that because it's like a child doing something they arent supposed to, you have to give some sort of punishment, you cant just ignore it and let them continue Moral of the story, your videos have been a lot more helpful than any trainer we've had yet, hopefully one day we'll be able to get a training session with you to help with his problems
@studiovulcan4411
@studiovulcan4411 3 жыл бұрын
"You can't just ignore it and let them continue" as a parent and someone who understands psychology I'll break this done for a second so you understand where it comes from even though i'm not a huge fan of it for either dogs or children. Usually when they take about doing the ignoring tactic the times when you would use it are when the child is doing something you don't like /for attention/. Dogs usually do things /for attention/, like kids. The idea is that if you don't like it, don't give them attention, the thing they're craving, and show them that there are other ways you're happy for them to get that attention. For dogs this can work as most of their behavior is attention-based, but I personally, like you, don't like this approach. Timeouts for kids are huge, and that's because you're /pulling them away from attention/, that's why they work. When they get to the age they don't, YOU take the timeout away from them, showing them they won't get attention by their own poor choices, you'll remove yourself. With dogs, the same things don't fire off in their brain, they're obviously different. I think that's why Tom's approach works better. A lot of training techniques have been adapted from children because they share the same age of brain development.

Well if you do not like it you can always give a time out, or if the dog is outside for a walk you get it and go back to home, if you use a prong and your dog goes to attack another dog you pull hard and walk to the other direction and if you will do it many times the dog will not do it again, because now they know that if they do they will feel pain (never ever pull it when it is not attacking or growling because the dog will start to think that the pain starts when I see other dogs so dogs=pain=bad). Now if you want to know what an actual mother dog would do on this case it is easy, they would pin them to the ground for submission, or bite their neck and pull them off, but it is not a positive training and if you will not do it correct your dog can start to afraid of you. If a dog goes to attack to someone else or try to dig a hole you can not ignore it, but if your dog jumps at you and barks at you should do it. To ignoring a dog is actually enough few times and it is the only way for them to learn (do not move your hands, while you do so, because they will consider it as a game) . I have used the mother's way when she has done something really bad, so now if I say stop, she stops but again it is not a positive training and maybe it is too violent for balance. Also if this is your first dog do not do it, it can be dangerous because the dog can bite you and it is something they try to do even to their mother. The pain from a choker is enough to stop a bad behavior but if you are not a trainer then it is not a good idea to use one, as well as electric collars.

4 yr old beautiful brindle pit female Mya. Loves people and kids. Flips out any time she sees another dogs; screams and lunges. Almost seems fear based. Shes so uneasy around any dog. We were told she was untrainable by a well known trainer in our area that deals with reactive dogs. Is this just what some trainers say when they dont want to work with a dog? From what ive seen on your channel this is such a wrong assessment. You and Mya have inspired me to decide to go to an animal behavior school. Thank you for what you do!

Amazing! This is not a dog trainer who only show off already perfect dogs and tell everyone how to train. In reality, most dog owners want to watch when the dogs are not behaving the "perfect" way so you get answers to the question on what to do when tve dog do not respond in the perfect way displayed in most dog training videos.

This dog's breeding is for cattle. You need a strong personality with leadership. Also breeds such as the Australian Shepherd, need a job to do. If your not into providing daily activity, these dogs bred from cattle dog breeding lines should not be kept as a house pet. It's not fair for the dog to be taken to the pound because of the owner not realizing the breed.

This is why when I was training full time I had owners research their particular dog breed and if it was a mix then they had twice if not three times the amount of research to do. It gave them a better understanding as to how to work with and what to expect from their dog.

I have a Red Heeler as a domestic/non working dog and has never shown any signs of aggression other than strange people entering our house after the suns gone down (which i will not train him out of) He's loyal and protects my family when due though mostly relaxed 90% of the time. You can generally have any breed of dog you like if it fits your lifestyle if you train it and tend to its physical and mental needs.

As the care giver of a red heeler + an Australian kelpie, I agree wholeheartedly. They have non negotiable needs, strong instincts and a strong will. They need a strong leader who is consistent all the way through and a healthy outlet for their intelligence and high energy.

My dog's name is Mia. I got her last month from the shelter. She is a malamute/husky mix. She was brought back to the shelter because she reacts to other dogs and will drag you down to the ground to visit with dogs she sees. I love love her. She is so sweet, but she is big. Love your videos.

Dogs need jobs. Like bratty teenagers if they have time on their hands and no purpose in life they get even more bratty. Find the dog's vocation and play with them. Dogs love play :-) They will work with you for playtime.

LOVE the vid!! You guys do amazing work. Do you have any videos about building confidence within your pup with kids? I’ve got him on track with adults for the most part, some people he’s still a a bit unconfident with. He’s not aggressive/defensive (lunges or snaps) but if we’re on a walk and a child approaches that would like to say hello he whines/lowly growls and pulls away/hides.

Looks like a cattle dog mix. As someone who has a cattle dog, I know these dogs can be difficult. They require so much work and structure. The good thing about these owners is that they’re trying to give her what she needs and thank goodness they found Tom! She’s still so young so there’s hope. My pup was showing great progress until he was attacked by two aggressive offleash dogs. That kicked his fear reactivity into gear and it slowly got worse. Finally I took him to a balanced trainer when he turned 1 and he went from lunging and snarling at other dogs to now playing so well with my trainer’s dogs. Calm walks are a thing now😂. So training does pay off! Hope this girl continues to get what she needs! They’re amazing dogs

Hi Tom! I would love to see any content that you have on dogs being protective of their owners! My 1 year old mix is very uncomfortable with me petting other dogs when she is around....she runs between my legs and growls at the other dogs. At first I thought it was cute but now I know that it is not ok and it’s just going to put both of us in danger. Thank you!!! 🐶

Surreal and heartbroken, I just had to give up my 15 WEEK OLD PUPPY due to these re-active leash, biting leg behaviors and serious inborn fear. In Seattle prong collars are a big no-no, and the training required were beyond us and our wallet. We have two little kids so bite risk was too high. I wish I had had someone like you to help our pup, and us.
