Sayeret Matkal, is considered to be one of the best special operations units in the world. They are one of Israel's most secretive units and almost all of their operations are highly classified and not revealed to anyone without the highest security clearance within Israel’s entire security establishment.
What is known about the unit is that they are a field intelligence-gathering unit that conducts deep reconnaissance behind enemy lines to obtain strategic intelligence. The unit is completely independent of the IDF’s usual structures and receives its missions directly from the General Staff. Sayeret Matkal is the meeting point at the pinnacle of Israel’s intelligence and special operations communities.
Matkal works closely with other tier 1 SF units particularly Shayetet 13 and Shaldag. It’s rumored that their missions have also crossed over with the absolute highest level of US Special forces such as the US Army's CAG.
In 1957 the IDF decided that it needed a unit that can be completely autonomous, without the command or budget restrictions of regular sf units.
In the selection process, they decided that they needed the very best of Israel’s youth and actively selected people with extreme levels of intelligence, but also athlete level fitness. The vision was to create a unit composed of the very best soldiers that would be able to carry out near-to-impossible missions anywhere in the world, in any conditions.
Sayeret Matkal began to operate independently a year later as the General Staff's elite special operations force, modeled after the British SAS.
In the late 60s, Sayeret Matkal began developing the first hostage-rescue and counter-terrorism techniques in the world.
The unit was kept top-secret during its initial years and its mere existence was never officially acknowledged until the late 1970s.
In 1976 Sayeret Matkal shocked the world when they spearheaded Operation Entebbe and rescued 245 airline passenger hostages in Uganda.
Instead of a normal military raid, they disguised themselves as the country's dictator by replicating his exact vehicle and entourage. The world had never seen a unit that operated with this level of intelligence and creativity.
Although Sayeret Matkal has its own insignia, it is also one of the only units in the IDF whose operators are not allowed to wear it in public due to its classified nature. Rumor has it that the unit’s operators carry their well-earned unit pin in their shoe.
While most of Sayeret Matkal’s missions are top-secret and unknown to the public, the unit has allegedly carried out countless high risk operations in almost all of Israel’s wars and conflicts in the past 60 plus years.
In a rare public sighting, during the 2006 2nd Lebanon war, Sayeret Matkal carried out a mission in a hospital in the city of Baalbek, 100 kilometers deep into Lebanon. The hospital served as an operations base where Hezbollah planned attacks together with Iranian instructors, confident they were out of reach of the IDF.
Approximately 200 commandos from Sayeret Matkal fast-roped from helicopters and infiltrated the hospital. While the precise objectives of the raid still remain classified to this day, Matkal killed at least 10 Hezbollah Terrorists and sent a strong message that they can operate anywhere in Lebanon and that they will go anywhere to eliminate their targets.
Today, Sayeret Matkal is allegedly carrying out high risk clandestine missions deep within enemy territory in order to keep Israel and its citizens safe. When they are not carrying out special operations, they are preparing for their next mission. They live in the shadows and strike fear into the hearts of Israel's enemies. When Israel needs to get the job done, they know who to call upon.

The idea behind SM is basically to gather highly intelligent people with athletic capabilities into one group or unit. They are being tested more on their creativity and thinking patterns then on shooting skills. They have some special teams that do very complicated behind the enemy line missions. Any SM operator is an intelligent, cold blooded, creative warrior.

Yes, they are Israeli DELTA FORCE. They are tier1 most elite unit in Israel together with: SHALDAG - longest training in Israeli SOF community, sister unit to SAYERET MATKAL (Air-force equivalent to USA-NIGHT STALKERS) UNIT 669 - special para-rescue and tracking unit, known for a huge amount of courses by each operator (also Air-force) SHAYETET 13 - (navy seals, other special underwater units make up the tier2 division) YAMAM police tier1 (elite counter terror kinda SWAT equivalent unit, also known for the toughest selection of the five units). those 5 make the tier1 special forces in Israel, while the equivalent of USA-GREEN BERETS would be a division combined of: MAGLAN, DUVDEVAN, EGOZ - 3 very unique operating units, something like elite rangers with "EXTREME" variety in skills and purpose, each has its own specialty which makes all 3 unique and a top unit of its purpose in Israel. followed by very special units like: YAMAS(fauda tv series), YAHALOM(special demolition) and many others like LOTAR, OKETZ, RIMON who complete the tier2 division. Tier3 would be all the sayeret units of regular army divisions, for example: SAYERET GOLANI, which also has longer training and specialized groups like snipers within the unit, while it takes the best out of GOLANI corps. if you want to know more check WIKI page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_forces_of_Israel from what i have read its quiet accurate.

wrong , shaldag is a mix of USAF SR with tacp ,they do recon missions behind enemy lines and establish assault zones or airfields, while simultaneously conducting air traffic control , their main purpose is to marking targets for aircrafts , night stalkers are not a special forces unit because their operators are pilots. yamas isnt the unit in fauda , the unit in fauda is undercover squadron of the shin bet , rimon is disbanded (most of their operators are now serving in maglan). there is no israeli equvilent to green berets , but their is to the 75th RR , and its the oz brigade aka commnado brigade made up of 3 units.

Not exactly accurate but close! 669 is more like SOAR/night stalkers…fauda tv series isnot exactly based on anyone particular but the mistaaravim in general are duvdevan, our undercover Arab unit that operate in West Bank primarily…yamas and Yamam are border police and the latter also have mistaaravim (undercover Arabs)..Rimon was disbanded long ago. LOTAR stands for lechimat terror (“terrorism combat”) and is Our counter terror school in the IDF . There is also a lotar unit but it’s reservists and all other SF units train at the school. Yahalom is combat engineering. Sayeret golani…ok well basically all our brigades (golani, givati, nahal, kfir, paratroopers) have their own specialized “gadsar” or SF battalion which is composed of a palsar unit (plugat siyur / recon), palnat (plugat neged tankim/ anti tank unit), and palhan (combat engineers). Oketz is the K-9 unit. You got the tiers correct! Tho yamam and yamas aren’t in the army…it’s really just shayetet 13 and matkal that are at the top and treated differently, and operate in their own worlds Friends and I have worked w and served in pretty much anything I named! Feel free to ask questions !

Try this סיירת מטכל There's even footage from a famous ambush where a team drops 12 terrorists in one burst outside of Jenin. And a undercover operation that went south in Gaza in 2018 where the team sergeant had to shoot and kill the team leader to prevent him being captured, killing the terrorists dragging him away after he tried alone to convince them they were locals, his body was recovered and the team had to destroy one of their vehicles and then were rescued by the air force with apaches and cobras laying down rings of fire around the team preventing the enemy from capturing them all as well, until a CH-53 landed and rescued them, but there was a problem with the count because of the dead team leader so the pilot refused to take off until they knew everyone was on board. There's actually an interview with the pilot and footage, not to mention a full Hamas movie about it. We mostly here about the bad stuff, but I'm pretty sure that's the way its supposed to be spec ops deny until there is proof. Then deny it some more :)

For those interested, the proper pronunciation is "sah-YEH-reht maht-KAHL". MaTKa"L -- acronym for "mah-TEH k'lah-LEE", or general STAFF (like the US Chiefs of Staff). The word Mateh has the meaning "staff" like a group of people and like the large stick, just like in English. Moses carried a "mateh". I've nothing but the utmost respect for our allies , especially their SF's. American and Israeli SF are elite and ranked among the best. But, not just because of patriotism and bias, but also fact. British special forces are still the most elite, versatile fighting asset on the planet. Of course this refers to the most famous, the original SF, the SAS but more so the more secretive, smaller SBS(special boat service). Some facts: 1 when other elite forces eg US SEALS, green berets, Israeli, etc etc SFS including the SAS all do a similar length of selection then those very few who make it, pass out with their berets then enter their special warefare training specific to their regiment for app 12-24 months depending on the regiment and it's capability etc. But the SBS while doing exact same selection as and indeed with SAS, But when the SAS select few who make it receive berets and belts the SBS candidates must then do a further 3 months of selection before getting berets and though known to be basic amphibious requirements for SBS selection very little detail is actually known about this . 2: Americans are well known for their tier one assets under the singular command of devgru it might surprise you to know that out of the 4figure amount of US navy seals only 70-75 seals are tier 1 operaters part of devgru It may also suprise you that is was UKSF's in Afghanistan (SBS carried out the deployments in Afghan) that helped train and develop the US in having a singular commend amalgamating all tier one assets as the entirety of SAS/SBS trooper are tier one operators make UK the only 100% SF as tier one. The SBS pioneered the ability to board and disembark submarines while submerged. Even in this modern western world where everyone is offended by everything and things like SF operations etc are more publicly scrutinized the SBS is still one of the most secretive SF regiments on the planet. They have never had a mission failure. UKSF'S are still the measuring , still the most versatile and elite fighting forces on the planet only getting better and stronger with the addition of a new RAF SF regiment not to mention the EVEN MORE SECRETIVE SRR(Special reconnaissance reg) of which basically nothing is known, other than they are solely intelligence gathering, especially deep in enemy territories. When you think how amazing the SAS intelligence gathering is, just imagine what a regiment, set up in the 2,000's who's sole purpose is intelligence, how good they must be is mind boggling. Along with our allies, especially the United States I am forever grateful for special forces operators . Without these elite groups on both sides of the Atlantic and our other allies the world would be an even more frightening place . What all these SF soldiers, nay, warriors do for us is aw inspiring, not to mention completely humbling as , from British perspective anyway they are faceless heroes, men who, although in modern times, internet, SM etc some become well known , even celebrated, much of their actions just like many of their colleagues past , present and future will be obscured in anonymity, many of their heroic deeds be the UKSF, US, or other allies will never be known what they have done for us Thank the universe go ALL OUR special operators . Sayaret Matkal is a Tier One elite unit. But, there are others who are on par or perhaps better like the SAS that Sayaret Matkal is based on. Delta force and Spetnaz are also top tier units. It is difficult to say which one is truly superior when in reality it comes down to the experience of the soldier
@1967John_P
@1967John_P 2 жыл бұрын
It also depends on how much experience they get. Back in the days while Barak Obama was smoking marijuana, Benjamin Netanyahu was smoking terrorists as a commando in Sayaret Metkal. Like the American S.W.A.T. gets little action in comparison to Israel's S.W.A.T. called YAMAM. They made a once in a lifetime trip to the U.S.A. for a International Counter Terrorism competition in 2010 and whupped the Americans and British, etc. (Google it.) Why? MORE INCIDENTS=MORE EXPERIENCE. Same goes for Sayeret Metkal, and higher military units, when you are ATTACKED CONSTANTLY, you gain EXPERIENCE and KNOWLEDGE from success and mistakes.

@@1967John_P whipped the British & American's? Never happened. There was no whipping on any side and as it should be known, these exercises are often unfairly constructed to gain the maximum training benefit so claiming victory isn't real. I'm ex-military and took part in many multi-country exercises and it's silly to claim victory in an exercise (and most of our countries have done it more than once). As for experience the British easily win on this front as they are a small force of SF guys who are constantly in action all over the world and not in just one area. The US SF guys are as good as anyone else's SF but there's a lot of them (by comparison). What we should do is say that all of these units have their own specializations and are all exceptional in different ways.

@@godkiller5286 MARCOS and ParaSF, for one, are not Tier 1, they are essentially Tier 2 elements, trained to the same level of efficiency as Green Berets, 75th Rangers and Navy SEALs, with R&AW's Paramilitary wing Special Group and the Special Frontier Force being Tier 1, being as well trained as the SAS/SBS, Delta, DEVGRU, ISA, the whole lot. Spetsnaz, on the other hand is an all encompassing term that simply means "Special Operations" in Slav languages, not a specific group. Russia's Alpha Group is the equivalent to USA's Delta and UK's SAS, I just chose not to mention them because some dumb ass would bring Ukraine into the conversation. And finally, Navy SEALs are classified in the US military as Tier 2, they are a maritime special operations unit and do limited work on the land. 75th Rangers are far better than them at land and have been occasionally bumped up to Tier 1 during GWOT because of high op tempo, but no, Navy SEALs aren't the best Special Operations unit in the world, they aren't even the best in their own country, hell not even the best in their own Navy, they are, however the most advertised SOF unit in the world. The best in the US Navy would be SEAL team 6 or its modern name "Naval Special Warfare Development Group" or DEVGRU for short, a group within the SEAL teams who do a very high degree of maritime special operations. They are the Naval counterpart to Delta.

Either way, ParaSF and Marcos are a white SOF unit, meaning they will do Special forces work in areas of conflict and places where its know that there is Indian military presence, while SAS/Delta/Special Group are Black SOF units who do work in areas and locations that do not have overt military involvement of these nations and often times no direct involvement whatsoever.

Brigadier General Tal Rousseau, the commander appointed during the war as responsible for the special operations of the Israeli army, was very enthusiastic about carrying out a massive military operation deep in Lebanese territory in July 2006, and his enthusiasm was shared by one of the most experienced officers in the Military Intelligence Division in the intelligence part of special operations Colonel Ronin. The high confidence in the Special Operations Command and its operational crews was a reason for the political leadership in Israel to bet on it to achieve a historic military achievement.On the eighteenth of July 2006, after the failure of the air campaign to break Hezbollah's deterrence ability represented by firing rockets at northern and central Israel, Colonel Ronen proposed to the General Staff the implementation of a special operation in the heart of Beirut, in which hundreds of soldiers of special units such as "Syert Metkal" would be dropped off. And "Shildagh" and "Magellan" to be stationed at specific points and launch lightning raids on Hezbollah targets.The main goal that was set for the operation was to form an image of a decisive victory for the Israeli army and to raise awareness of Hezbollah through the symbolism that Beirut enjoys as the capital of Lebanon, in which it is located. The Southern Suburb, which represents a moral and material weight for Hezbollah, but Chief of Staff Dan Halutz rejected the idea due to the high risks of this operation, and called on the Special Operations Command to formulate another proposal.Tal Rousseau and his team worked to study the available options, until he received intelligence information that decided the destination. The Iranian doctor, who was strongly suspected by the Israeli intelligence services, had treated Colonel "Elhanan Tanenbaum" who was captured by Hezbollah in the year 2000, is still present in Baalbek, specifically in “Dar Al-Hikma” hospital, where he is based, and there is an estimate that it is possible that he is also the one who treats the two captive soldiers, Regev and Gold Wasser.Prime Minister Olmert and Defense Minister Peretz were very excited about this operation, and saw in it an operation similar to the "Entebbe" operation, in which Israeli prisoners were rescued by the force of special units.The operation was approved and everyone is waiting for the results. Before the helicopters that were preparing to transport the soldiers of the “Sirt Matkal” and “Shildag” units took off, information arrived that the Iranian doctor had lost his tracks and was no longer in Baalbek in the first place.Olmert was not informed of this information for fear of stopping the operation, which Rousseau and Ronen saw as a great achievement. The city of Baalbek is Hezbollah's logistical home front, and according to Ronen, landing a large force in it that would carry out a lightning operation would have a great impact on Hezbollah's consciousness.On the night of August 1, “Yas’ur” helicopters, carrying about two hundred soldiers from the special units, took off to carry out the operation, which was called “a useful brief,” to a place near the Dar Al-Hikma Hospital, which Hezbollah had evacuated several days ago. And kept inside it only three guards.The soldiers raided the floors of the hospital and some houses that they thought were Hezbollah centers, but they were empty. On their way back to the landing site of the helicopters ready to take off and take them back to occupied Palestine, they arrested a number of civilians, including a sixteen-year-old boy who was tending sheep.Throughout the hours of the operation, tension pervaded the wheelhouse in Tel Aviv, and even the less experienced people in the room, led by Peretz, sensed in those moments the scale of this great risk. Mossad chief Meir Dagan summed it up with one phrase: "A great miracle happened because Hezbollah was not waiting for us."
