This video shows the progression of increasingly complex gait strategies from ATRIAS through recent results with Cassie. Specifically, Cassie's controller now includes planned footstep placements in addition to dynamic balancing, allowing access to substantially more complicated terrains.

I guess we humans also assume the floor is all flat, and we only pay more attention when we perceive irregular floor by sight or by feels. And with stairs we kinda measure the first few steps and then assume the rest are the same size, and we only compensate when we see or feel any difference. That's also why we might fall when walking on irregular floor or claiming irregular stairs, because of miscalculation.

I beg to differ a little bit. We don't know "what" we are. Calling ourselves humans is just a name, not knowledge (Feynman, thank you). So, assuming we know what a robot is, we cannot call us "machines" in the sense of a robot being a machine. As to why we fall, miscalculation is only a factor in the equation, IMHO, not the most important. Statistically, a set of random miscalculations can render a stable solution, but... The speed of the correcting action is a major factor. As is the case with fly-by-wire technology. A plot cannot control a F-16, for example, with a dead FBW due to slow reactions of the human body. At a higher level, a human can change the task, and instead of trying to stabilize will attempt to find some support: a chair, a wall, a hand..., or even touch the ground to prevent a full fall.
@movax20h
@movax20h 5 жыл бұрын
Yes. I only watched no video (no audio), but I was: hmm, these things and "feets" are flat, and it kind of go blindly into them, but that makes sense, most walking surfaces are flat, and we do assume it is flat most of the time. The way robot feels steps with its feets (at 1:03) is pretty impressive too.

Some Cassie trivia: the carbon fiber Cassie shown in early videos had the extra "chin" in the front shell to allow for a KVH fiber optic gyro. It ended up not being necessary in version 2 of Cassie and was cut from the commercial design, since MEMS IMUs have gotten really good. But the fiber gyros are a whole different level of good. Cassie can confirm that the earth is round, because the gravity vector from the KVH does in fact drift at the rate that a rotating planet predicts. This is a plot point in the new Netflix documentary "Behind the Curve"...

They grow up so fast these days! * wipes off tears * Somehow Cassie is more impressive to me than what Boston Dynamics had achieved. I mean, of course they had some cool algorithms, but this is an actual 2-legged robot who can walk firmly more or less, without shaking or experiencing other motion artifacts. I can't understand why you guys are miles apart in sub count.

Cassie is certainly significantly lighter, that's probably part of the reason she can move more "organically".
@sebastian_schanz

The difference is, Atlas does everything by processing data gathered from its environment. While Cassie is an actual reactive robot, with reflexive behaviour. Humans don't think about each step like Atlas does. And that is what makes Carrie look much more natural and organic while walking. I don't think that Atlas is the right way to achieve human-like movement. It's a mixture of both worlds, reflexive and planned movement. Agility Robotics is on the way to achieve that. Impressive.

@@sebastian_schanz To me that difference is only attractive. Cassie is somewhat blind, but despite that it can navigate in surroundings under operator's control without much trouble. I am not a big fan of robots with giant spinning lidars replacing heads.

That's a huge step up. Before, a transition between motionless and motion was required. Now the transition is less obvious and very smooth. Therefore, less energy required. Keep up the development.

Amazing work. I wonder, if another way to solve the stair problem, would be using optical sensors in the feet. Like a laser in your everyday mouse, instead there would be a laser that projects outward in front of the foot, that way the foot would always Know to lift itself. Pair this with an optical laser that aims down from the bottom of the foot, and it would know the appropriate distance to place it's next step, heigh and distance already being accounted for. just spitballing some ideas, I'm no engineer, tho I wish lol.
@sebastian_schanz
@sebastian_schanz 5 жыл бұрын
first problem would be, that optical sensors need to be clean to work properly. And they are sensible. Walking like Cassie does in the dirt, wouldn't be possible with optical sensors. But indeed there are other sensors, which could be placed directly into the foot. Like ultrasonic sensors.
