Idk how this man does it, but when he talks, I feel the emotion and see the world through his words, a pillar among narrators

The concern about opening the gate letting in the creatures makes it sound like the defenses, especially the gate house was not very well designed. A proper gate like you see in many medieval castles have an inner and outer portcullis. This is so if the first one is breached there is a backup as well as being able to let troops in and out without opening it to the enemy as you open the inner gate with the outer one closed. Then close the inner gate and open the outer one so even if the troops trying to leave or rushed the gate is not breached. The same is for retreating troops as they can flee into the gate house and then have the outer door closed behind them without risking enemies getting into the main castle. The other benefit this provides is it creates a great choke point as if the enemy does get into this gate area and you close the outer gate they are trapped while you can shoot at them or pour hot oil down on them. Or stab at them with spears through the portcullis. Basically the defenders have a ton of advantages at taking out the attackers that try to come through the gate.

I thought they described it like a palisade...

aye , but its also something a lot of writers , game designers etc misses out on.... that even frontier camps with 'simple' palisades if its anything set up to be there longer then a single night ,its 'gate' is at a minimum a double gate ..an inner and a outer one so you both have a ''kill zone'' between them and the option to risk trying to save friendlies approaching while being attacked by superior forces or to sally out limited amounts of manpower without risking to be over run in reverse

@@TheMonkey747 think most examples in history of anything set up for more then a single night , the second day it gets a interior gate added behind the first one...even if its something so 'simple' like a palisade wall... after all , the only thing you need to do to make a improv gate house for a palisade wall is to extend the palisade a little bit on the inside and set up a second gate behind the first ,before i guess starting work to reinforce that palisade with some earthworks behind it to give the defenders more sturdy things then a rickety walkway to walk on.

@@Amoth_oth_ras_shash True... Huh, I guess I was really tired when I wrote that. It's not nearly as well thought out as some of my other comments.

@@TheMonkey747 no stress , not fully thought out comments/thoughts is how a lot of things found whole new horizons after all ;) just love seeing little back and forths about elaborating or extrapolating stuff like this in threads tied to the material itself , it gives sort of a 'pub talk' feeling when its in good spirit after all

This is a story that only the Japanese, and skill in animation (and voice acting), would do this story justice. Their fascination with the supernatural make for a perfect match...and an epic tale to tell.

I’m pretty sure that humans would expend every effort to produce artillery and firearms in such circumstances. The need for better weapons would be a more essential reason for the industrial revolution than that of our own. Machine guns and arty, tanks, and powered aircraft would make short work of the ‘horde’.
