Worked in the scrap industry for a long time. I pressed every big red button I came across, hoping it would make something go boom. In my defense, I spent several years as a USMC Combat Engineer.

Well let’s be honest men love things that go boom and cars, now a combustion engine is basically lots of explosions one after another so really we just love explosions 😂😂😂

Oh yes... 10 years in the Navy taught me that the most dangerous thing in the world was a bored enlisted man. During a Med Cruise in the early 1970's, I helped build a Super BB Gun. We used 3/16" tubing for the barrel and fired it with 4000 psi compressed air. Impressive and scary! We punched holes in 1/4" steel plate with it. Then a bored shipmate decided to try shooting sea gulls with it, and the BB's flew across the base, breaking windows a mile away. We took it apart & hid the parts. Our Shop Chief told us that if we did anything that dumb & dangerous again, nobody would ever find our bodies after he was finished with us... Yep, your Tax Dollars at work!

"Curiosity killed the cat...but satisfaction brought him back" THIS is why humans love cats; we have same formula of Curiosity plus boredom equal mayhem.

That man has justly earned a 'In My Defense, I Was Left Unsupervised' T-shirt. A best seller, right up there with the, 'Innocent Bystander' T-shirt... 😄

We had similar activities when working our shifts at the Crash/Fire/Rescue at Indianapolis International Airport. One of our privates would break the monotony by building mini-rockets using soda cans taped together and fueled by carbide gas.

Mini-rockets sound pretty cool. Mini-rockets at the AIRPORT though....

Glad to read you're settling in at your new home in Portugal. I understand it's quite a fine place in which to retire.

Calling it right now, that soldier was on something. Drugs, alcohol, a triple-dog-dare from his comrades, something that impaired his common sense and increased his luck.

In his defense, he could have been looking for a shower or ratpak. Even stranger things happened in the desert when word got out of somebody getting a care package from home.

he's not going to be good E-4 material, and his men are going to hate him if he makes E-5 + in rank with that much aversion to boredom

He's already an NCO with corporal so the troops already don't like him.

A famous question from our Platoon Sergeant (clean version), where did fecking Murphy get a recoiless rifle? Our section Sergeant said something along the lines of it wasn’t me, I think he found it in the Armory. I was just glad there wasn’t a flamethrower in the Armory. Also it was always fecking Murphy, not just Murphy. Just always fecking Murphy. Worse was the fact that fecking Murphy had convinced about half of his squad to help by carrying the rounds for the recoilless, while the other helped carry the tripod and recoilless rifle while he gave directions. The Platoon Sergeant made them take all of it back to where ever he had “found” it. I will admit to being disappointed that we didn’t even get to see it in action. Then we had a platoon formation to once again to exercise common sense when being asked to do anything by fecking Murphy. Surprisingly he made Spec4….the Gods truly smiled on fecking Murphy, or at least laughed a lot.
