Daechwita is the traditional music that was played in front of the King’s procession whenever the King left the palace during the Joseon dynasty in Korea. So what Suga is saying when he says play the Daechwita loudly, is “let everybody know that the King is coming.”

Fun fact! Daechwita only has one beat throughout the song, it’s Yoongi’s rapping, flow and tone change that makes it feel like every verse has a different beat. It’s his polymetric rap flows, his agogic accents, or his use of syncopation to rap in between beats that makes him such a distinguished rapper. His signature rap style of being ahead of the beat, & then slowing down or speeding up his cadence giving the ultimate tension and release with his flow is so impressive. This man can build up 16 bars just by starting ahead of the beat, move to hitting behind, refuse to resolve the bar and then start hitting non traditional notes. Not only can he spit bars super fast, HE’S A FUCKING GENIUS, building palaces around other industry rappers with his lyrics and flows. "Bang PD-nim told me I've become much brighter after releasing my mixtape (in reference to the letter and how he released his first mixtape as a way to let out toxic emotions). He even asked me where the indecisive person full of wrath from before had gone. It was my complex and the way to solve it was music that I need to make". To begin with, “Daechwita” is the Korean word to refer to the traditional marching music played at the time of a King’s arrival. It is also played to announce important guests and other royalty. The music video starts with the King Agust D with a scar running across his eye. It looks fresh and hasn’t completely healed over yet. The other protagonist of the video is Agust D as a lowborn, also with a scar running across his face, completely healed over. This is relevant in order to show a natural progression and further reinforce that these two characters are simply versions of the same person in and out of time. The King represents AGUST D of the past, with wounds fresh from the humiliation, malicious comments of haters and lack of support is defensive and reacts violently to opposition. A Suga full of ambition and anger (represented by his iconic blond hair from his first mixtape Agust D). This King is a tyrant, who kills those who oppose him and steops in his subjects. Yoongi himself has said that he used to be a very angry person who was overwhelmed with his career and mental health issues (as per a letter he shared on the Bangtan Fan Café, interviews afterwards and his mixtapes themselves). For AGUST D of the present, the lowborn, those scars have faded away, leaving behind a more mature persona. In Korean tradition, a man or woman with a scar is barred from coveting the throne even if it rightfully belongs to them. As such, the fact that the King has an evident scar right on his face proves that he’s probably had to fight off all royalty to retain his position. It is likely that he wasn’t born royal either and had to fight his way up to the top. Having struggled so much, the King is wary of outsiders and taken on the role of a tyrant so that nobody can even dare to threaten his place. Taking the easy way out, he executes whoever complains, signified by the kneeling figures in black and disembodied victims of the King.. Peasant Suga is his current self, grounded and surrounded by others (as seen by him being backed by his crew of 6 other men and a woman, is quietly making the moves to stage a coup. He’s loved by the people and he has connections everywhere. The 6 men in his crew represent the rest of the members of BTS and the woman represents ARMY). The rest of the MV is pretty self-explanatory, with the "lowborn" AGUST D shooting The King. He's decided to kill the tyrant King through a Coup. He is trying to kill his toxic past self (which can also be a reference to his previous mixtape's song The Last: "Min Yoongi was dead. -I killed him-") to fully embrace who he is now; someone who doesn't care about charts or hatred from others, someone who isn't bothered by money and whose ambitions are less greedy and more rooted in artistry rather than a twisted idea of success. He doesn't need to fight to be at the top anymore, he already is. He KNOWS this, it isn't arrogance, it's just a fact; and he's settled with who he is now. Daechwita’s music video single-handedly chalks the progression from Suga’s first mixtape to his latest, from being a young rapper to a professional Grammy-nominated artist. In order to reach this place, Suga has had to reject parts of himself that focused entirely on the negatives, on rage and on the material aspects of his success. He’s had to fight his shadow (a concept we see in his own solo from MOTS: 7 - Shadow), represented by the King Agust D and only when he could overpower his shadow, his true self could prevail. I think that listening to both his mixtapes is a great way to understand why the shift between D-2 Yoongi and Agust D Yoongi is so jarring but beautiful as well. Agust D and The Last are a wonderful way to start, so I would love if you reacted to those two songs next! You can feel how much of different place he's in now compared to back then. The Last is very heavy, though, so be careful! Yoongi was involved in all aspects of this song and music video and had great input into how the music video was designed/produced (working as usual with Director Lumpens (Choi YongSeok) who does most BTS MVs) - Yoongi wrote, produced, composed the song, he conceptualised the MV and had creative control, all in his "spare" time for his fans as part of his second mix tape (D-2) that he gave to ARMY for free on soundcloud... He literally never stops creating. D-2 Album interview - kzbin.info/www/bejne/p33aaZqCpstjmKc BOOKISH THEORIES also does brilliant explanations to BTS work - Daechwita explanation kzbin.info/www/bejne/lV6Xn52qmZWKpqc (better than dkdktv's in my personal opinion), check it out if you're interested! Other Video Fun facts - 1. The executione is actually the butcher shown at the beginning of the MV, the one peasant Suga greets. 2- He is, also, the director of lighting haha 3. The gun used to kill the King was a Colt M 1860 ARMY 4. They were going to use a really expensive modern car but it wouldn't drift so then they went with the old car that was really flash when Yoongi was young 5. The picture on the banner the guys held up half way through is an iconic image drawn by JK of their boss PD Bang and Suga did the iconic PD Bang finger spin! 6. Jin and JK make a cameo in the video! Try to find them hehe Daejanggeum Park is where the MV was filmed.... It is a giant film set that doubles as a public historical park where people can come to "experience" old times. Yoongi (Suga) is a member of the clan of the very last empress of Korea.

Daechwita (대취타) is a group of traditional instruments that are played during the king's ceremonial processions. it was performed during military marches or when the army won the war. only the military was allowed to play it at the time. but here 대취타 itself is turned on its head as a symbol of rebellion against the severe king. the executioner is on the rebellion side too, you can see him and Yoongi's character meeting eyes in the village in the beginning of the mv. and also noticethat all those black clothed people that were kneeling to the king (but were still humiliated) in the end are shaking their heads to the rebellion leader singing Daechwita. they support him out of choice, not fear or force. they don't want their king too the king is aka Agust D: he is blond like Yoongi was during Agust D - first mixtape, that got him an immense fame. a quote from "The Last": "And Min Yoongi? I killed him" - this is Agust D's words about getting through the hardships and using them to fire up the greed that was a weapon to get to the point he is at today. he had to create a persona that could take it and shrug everything off. so Agust D is the persona that gave him power and fame, took him to the heights he's at. The king is full of himself, he is rough, doesn't care about those who's below him, killing people if he doesn't like them (execution scene, boxes with heads). That's the representation of what he could have become under the industry and success / what he is turning into / what people have made him out to be the rebellious one is Min Yoongi, his commoner self who's there to take the control back and kill the king and take over the throne, to force his real self to remember where he came from. he is the "reality check" to "put my feet on the ground", show that he still values his roots and his journey both characters share the same scar to signal that they are one. that's why one of them is hiding under the hat at the market place, bc he looks like the king. also in k-dramas a man with a scar couldn't become a king (a symbolic artistic touch that is not a historic fact), this would mean that mv’s character had to fight all royalties to become the king which is basically the story of bts. though Yoongi said he wanted a scar bc it just looks cool 😄 there's a lot more but go to bookish theories channel :) they have amazing explanations (would NOT recommend dkdktv for this one)

Suga/Agust D came up with the story of this mv. He's playing the berserk king and the villager/assassin. There are many meanings behind this. The king is blonde and the villager is black haired. This MV from his 2nd mixtape D-2 came out in 2020, when Suga/Agust D had black hair. By making the king blond, he's actually referring to his past self, in his previous mixtape (2016), who was hungry for more, and could lose his footing and humbleness after all the success. Suga had released his 1st mixtape in 2016, and he was donning blonde hair in the MVs of that mixtape. So basically Agust D of 2020 killed his old (2016) self and is perfectly comfortable, contented and healthily aiming for more goals while remaining humble. AND the story he referenced to was of a Korean king of joseon dynasty who had gone crazy after getting power of the throne, was killing people left and right. That's why the lyric: "gwanghae flow" (name of the king)

“He a problem” hahaha! There’s a reason one of ARMY’s oldest running inside jokes is “I will sue you, Min Yoongi!” I’m so glad you’ve found SUGA’s solo stuff. He’s my BTS bias (though I love all of them!) and his music actually got me, at the ripe old age of 39, to listen to and appreciate rap for the first time. Because of him, RM and J-Hope I discovered other rappers like NF, J. Cole, etc and have come to appreciate rap as an art in a way I wouldn’t have otherwise. Daechwita is such a fun track. There are so many cool historical references and lil nods to both SUGA’s history as well as BTS history in the video. There are several interviews where he talks about his intentions with the track and the MV, so if you want to go more in-depth definitely check those out. Both his mixtapes, Agust D and D2, have amazing, self-produced tracks on them. He, like all the guys, is uber talented. I can’t wait to see you react to more of his stuff, and I’m excited for you to hear RM’s solos as well. Cheers!

When you said that western artists are AFRAID of this kind of talent, you got me. It's true. Only the greats will work with BTS, and especially with BTS' more commercial English era songs, I really feel that a LOT of hip-hop artists worry about street cred to be honest. But truly, most of BTS is SO REAL and so filled with heart and soul. I love that you can see it!❤The rapline are the most palatable for western hip-hop fans and Suga has Eminem fast 'tongue technology' that really endears him to western audiences. What's with the scar? A scar in old Korean reign would mean you are unfit to be a king. Which here means he is a rouge king. Also Daechwita is not just beat - This a traditional Korean song that was played exclusively for the kings. This song is symbolic of Yoongi as a world famous star trying to balance his roots and "killing" any ego that he may have to stay true. It's one of their loudest declaration of how proud they are are Koreans after many haters tried to say they're too westernised. This MV is based off of a historical event Also, Bang PD is their company's CEO - the humble man who is gathered and guided them into BTS as group and his someone the group holds special affection and respect for (don't let anyone else tell you otherwise because some people would try to say that) Bang PD was probably the first ever BTS fans and still likely their biggest supporter.

I’ve been a fan of BTS since 2013 and I can honestly say that one of the things they have continued to do, whether through their mix tapes or as a group, is explore and experiment with new styles and genres. Nothing is ever half assed, their level of artistry is insane and so genuine. I see plenty of comments giving context to the background and cultural context of Daechwita and there’s so much in every song they touch. Their song Spring Day touches on the Sewol tragedy of 2014 where a ferry filled with students sunk into the sea and due to culture customs, most students did not try to leave the ferry even as the captain did. Spring Day’s a song that hasn’t stopped charting in South Korea since it first came out in 2017 and BTS are one of the few artists to have ever openly acknowledged it because of how political the tragedy was. I know it’s been mentioned, but I wanted to highlight that BTS came from a small company. As a long time fan of kpop and a fan of underdog groups that disbanded due to not having the privilege of a financially successful company, the odds were always stacked against BTS and they were, by all means, meant to fail the way so many other groups did by design. Thankfully that’s not the case but I did want to give a shout-out to their roots because they fought tooth and nail to get to where they are today and yet they never lost their drive or kindness. Yoongi (suga/agustD) is honestly one of the most comforting people I’ve found in all these years (all the members are) and so there’s so much of what makes their music amazing built into their very DNA. Not even for a reaction video material, but I recommend you look up interviews or vlogs or episodes their company has uploaded where you can listen to them talk about life and mental health and how they view the world and how they in turn create their music because all members participate in writing and producing even if it isn’t always up to the rap line’s amount. They’re all credited artists on every album. Enjoy exploring them more and thank you for being genuinely curious!

He IS a problem child, and trust and believe, cuz can get it any time he wants to. His fans are proposing to him all the time... even when he's not even there. ;) ("Yoongi Marry Me" has become an ARMY tradition.) I'm so glad you enjoyed this so much! Be careful playing it in the car - I've gotten speeding tickets because this man gives me a bad case of lead foot. I agree that it's a sad state of affairs that quality work like this can't gain a foothold in the west. If BTS spoke English, or if they weren't Asian, they'd own America by now. It's all about racism and xenophobia.
@timothywest1183 Жыл бұрын
Don’t blame everything on racism and xenophobia. It’s just a fact that the US doesn’t have hardly any top songs that are not in English. The old joke ‘What do you call someone that speaks two languages? Bilingual. What do you call someone who speaks three languages? Trilingual! What do you call someone who only speaks one language? American!! This is all too true. If it’s not in English, it’s hard to get a foothold. Butter, Dynamite and Permission to Dance are very popular in the US, even though to Army they are the least ‘BTS-like’ songs. You’re now seeing more collabs with US artists and that’ll lead to more people going ‘who are these guys?’ And investigating like this gentleman has done. And his followers will also get exposed. They will continue to gain massive traction in the US. Simply because they are great, and people will start to get over the ‘but I don’t know Korean’ hurdle in their minds. It’s more work to find English lyrics, but if they do….they’ll fall down the rabbit hole just like us. Hopefully. 😂

Yea you hit the nail on the head with this one. The beat goes so hard. The MV is cinematic. The match cuts are insane. The aesthetics are crazy. There's a whole story being told in this MV and it goes along with the instrumentals in the beat......i.e. Daewitchita which is ceremoniously played for Kings etc. The twang of the traditional Korean sound on top of the bass just matches so well. The reason his head didn't actually get cut off at the end........in the beginning of the MV you can see peasant Suga had some sort of a deal with the butcher who is also the executioner. It's very brief. Also, you notice in the beginning all the people are faithfully bowing to King Suga and he even hops on the back of one of them. Whereas in the end you see them all head banging to peasant Suga showing that the people had switched sides. BTS in both their group and solo work are veeerrry intentional with their music. It all goes together. It all tells a story. The words go with the sound go with the MV. Items in the MV are placed there intentionally as well. You will often find 'explanation' videos for their MVs. Also, the 2 guys fighting in the background are Jin and Jungkook of BTS. You can even find a clip of Jin saying his makeup and costume for the video took so long that he thought he should have a longer appearance in the MV. 😂 But they are so supportive of each other that often times they show up to the set just to show support and end up in the MV. In JHope's 'More' MV, you will find V makes a quick appearance. One of the aspects ARMY loves about BTS is how they support and care for each other. 💜

The underlying storyline of the MV is Yoongi essentially dethroning himself. His first mixtape Agust D was released in 2016 and came from a place of deep anger and hurt, exploring the emotions, insecurities and traumas that had plagued him for years-- he among all the BTS members comes from the roughest background, he experienced poverty and went against his parents to pursue music when he was only a teenager and this frequently led to him going hungry and living in very rough conditions-- But Yoongi's words connected with a lot of people, and in a lot of ways the album was revered, this level of honesty, especially about mental health, was not common in kpop or hip-hop in general. It was raw, the darkest pieces of Yoongi on display for everyone to see. But times obviously changed, Yoongi has found peace with that time, changed and evolved as a person, the anger and spite and ego that fuelled him has dissipated and he's become far healthier as a person. Success, stability and therapy have done a lot to help him. But he knew that when he released his second mixtape, people would expect more of that darkness and anger that he'd healed from. To go back to the past him that was so beloved by fans wouldn't have been healthy for him, so he had to dethrone the old Agust D (it's no mistake the king is as platinum blonde as he was when he dropped that first mixtape) to make way for his new self, still undoubtedly a rebel against the system but far more confident in himself, who reflects on his past rather than being consumed by it. It really is a journey, it's no wonder it took him four years to release another mixtape, he had to go through like six character arcs first.

It surprised me when you said Suga lives and breathes hiphop, cause even if you dont know much about the members' lives, it made me happy and proud that that reflects in their work!!

You're right in which Sugas is not afraid to speak his mind, but not only Suga, THE WHOLE BAND has social PROTEST songs that INSPIRES not to be silent, for example: "NO" In "N.O.", through both the song's lyrics and the visually ambitious MV, the idols offer a blunt critique of South Korea's education system and its apparent goal of turning people into "study machines," prepared for models. of specific life "I'm wrong?" Despite opening as an apparent love song, "A I Wrong?" it points to the political apathy of the world's citizens and, above all, of public officials. Through the lines in which the Bangtan Boys sing: "The world is going crazy... Everyone has ears but they don't hear. Everyone has eyes but they don't see...". Besides BTS took a big risk performing this song, during 2016, there was intense political turmoil in South Korea (long story) and the president was blacklisting artists who didn't support him and the song in general was about social reform in south korea, am i wrong's lyrics are quite political, actually at one point quoting and directly protesting some very class-minded statements made by government officials. bts literally could have been blacklisted by the government for performing this song, or even writing it, and they did it anyway, they are an incredibly brave group for this, and I am so proud of them. "Silver Spoon (Baepsae)" Again in “Silver spoon (Baepsae)”, BTS goes too far with the repression of the potential of young people and the scarcity of possibilities to have a dignified life, through phrases such as: “We were cursed, this generation… Saying that this is justice You must be kidding." "Break Thorns" "Spine Breaker" is indirect speech about South Korea's economic gaps, which may well be applicable to the entire world. It can also be interpreted as a criticism of the system. The Bangtan Boys rap the lines: "The class of the 21st century is divided down the middle, the haves and the have-nots"

I have been listening to their music for over 5 years and they ALWAYS manage to surprise me. You think you know what you're going to expect next, and NOPE. You don't. They continue to improve and get better and better. They truly have the passion and the craft and they do create ART. That's why they are loved by so many of us. It's not just a hype. You can see and recognize and appreciate art and hard work and talent when you see it. Thanks for giving them a chance! :)

I’ve been a fan of BTS since 2013 and seeing them grow and develop as a band and soloists has been incredible. I love Suga's music, he speaks the truth and he is genuine. Also, he is coming back on April 21!!!

If you notice, when Suga walking by the street venders, one of them is the man that was supposed to chop his head off. Suga smiled at him because they are in cahoots. He was supposed to cut Suga's head off but instead cut him loose and gave him a gun to kill King Suga. BTW, Suga produced this beat!! Enjoyed your reaction. 💜
