Jack I meant to ask you a long time ago, been watching since dangercat, I know you are open for any saw dependent on the situation and task at hand, but what is your go to, hands down, favorite saw for all around purpose with what your normal cut is?
@fabzacres-blackcat6 жыл бұрын
Nice job Jack ! On both the tree-work and the saw ... 462cm produced well in that configuration and the gent dropping the tree did a fantastic job as did the Cat operator ... diced up about 4-5 facecord this morning with the JB rippers sporting sharp chain - made quick work of it and put smile on face !

I'm surprised you went with the Humboldt, that close to the dirt. Would a standard undercut be better suited for stump shot?
@hotsaws1015 жыл бұрын
batmantiss hi. There is a lot of duff around the base, it's not dirt. Also, I wanted a flush butt so if there was a problem with the pull line the tree would have a better chance to dig in and stop. I'm not sure what a "standard undercut" is since I use any, all and variations of any and all regularly. A few years back I posted a video the shows what the actual "Humboldt" undercut, that is indigenous to Humboldt County in California, is. This was an inverted farmers face cut technically. This undercut is referred to as the Humboldt undercut, but technically it is not accurate. Thanks for watching.

Is the problem with the bark binding the chain the reason timber fellers sometimes cut slabs of bark off before cutting their face? It’s to incredible see what experienced hands and minds can do with trees. Awesome work!!!
@northmanlogging27696 жыл бұрын
bark swell is seasonal mostly, the bark skinning is mostly done on thick bark trees so that the wedges have something to bite into, bark will just peel off and the tree will sit back anyways unless you have the wedge in actual wood its useless, bark can be several inches thick in older Doug Fir trees, sometimes close to a foot thick on true old growth, occasionally bark skinning is done out of fear of dirt in the bark, sandy soils, fire damaged areas, volcanic areas etc, for that type you really have to skin it all the way around to do any good though.
@northmanlogging27696 жыл бұрын
the other reason is to check condition of the tree, find rotten spots etc
@austindenotter196 жыл бұрын
northman logging awesome answers i was wondering the same thing.
@hotsaws1016 жыл бұрын
Scott hi. The bark swell season is for 2/3 months each spring. It depends on when the warmth hits. The bark will actually "grow" or swell, if you will, up into the curf and cause the chain to run. There are times when you cannot get through the bark with a new 3/8s bar and chain. This is because the bark will swell so quick you get one side through but the back side of the chain will be forced off and run. Yah, it's quick. There are different version of the bark as well. Some of it is thin (2/4 inches) and some of it is thick (6/10) in second growth. The thin stuff is usually more dense. The thicker bark is usually really spongey or porous. I cut down a small, 6' old growth one time that had 12" of bark for a net of 4' across the hinge. It was the spongey bark on that tree. I cut down some pretty big redwoods "back in the day" when it was still going on regularly that had 18" of bark. The old growth trees that size had the hard dense version that would hinge and pull wood fibers just like the sap and heart wood. In old growth fir the "best" bark I ran into was the 6/8" thick. Sometimes I was cleaning my air filter from the fine dust after just getting the tree on the ground. If I cut the bark off in the front/side of the tree it is usually so that I can see the two cuts for alignment. On the sides it is so that I can see the hinge and not cut the corner/s off. I agree with northman logging about getting rid of the bark in the back for wedging purposes, especially in the spongey redwood bark version and fir bark. In the thin hard bark on redwoods it will actually help with wedging occasionally. Sometimes I will chop the fir bark off since it holds a lot dirt and will dull your chain/s. The thin spongey redwood bark doesn't chop very well. A lot of the time the axe will just bounce off. The thick bark version will chop pretty good, most of the time. Redwoods are a completely different animal. There is no "normal" in the bark, sap wood, or the heart wood of that matter. Thanks for watching.
@41odyssey6 жыл бұрын
in bc large doug firs have heavy bark the back is slabbed off for wedging you get better lift off of actual wood than bark

I noticed that alot of people are confused about "production logging " and what he's doing in the video. Preparation and fine tuning your cut is time consuming, dick wagons that are in a hurry shouldn't have chainsaws near buildings. In the end the target was to avoid the small building which was achieved, if more people took their time there wouldn't be (chainsaw fail videos) . If your in a big hurry stick to the forest and mountains where you can't damage houses ,trucks, or your ego. Nice job Jack.

That go fast clutch cover leaves alot yo be desired in the chip spittin department I see, other than that little observation.......that saw has uh PLENTY under the hood in that configuration. So the bark swell was the cause of the slight stutter in the saw when you started the 2 face cuts? I've never ran one but was just that that was the Mtronic version finding the sweet spot in the tune, but to the highly untrained such as myself, I thought 'dang that seemed quick draw on the tune from idle to WFO, pretty damn good!' I myself wouldn't mind going backwards in series of saw to the '0' versions of orange and white. Especially an insane-o Jacky-san 064.........I think that would be a bad mother in an all-around saw contest, but I would take a Jacky-san insane-0 anything so who am I kiddin
@hotsaws1016 жыл бұрын
Woos 31 hi. I think it's a combination of getting a bar full of bark, me backing out of it slightly and the m-tronic system tripping the limiter. The Stihl electronics are a little bit more subtle than the Husky version when cutting out the pulse from the coil. You can also hear it bumping up against the rev limiter when finishing off the face cut ~ 2:44/2:47. This saw is constantly bumping up against the rev limiter because of it's state of tune. It is fighting the bark swell a little bit here as well. Thanks for watching.
