Because no matter how beautiful a woman is, if her husband is insecure… he’s going to look to fill a hole in himself that nothing can fill. Goes for anybody that cheats on a perfectly wonderful partner. It’s about what’s missing inside the cheater.

In many ways I think Betty was Don's true love but his secrets, his mental state, his infidelities prevented him and Betty from becoming a more successful couple, had he told her about being really Dick Whitman early on and just been truthful I think betty would've understood in time, she already knew he was from a poor background and that clearly meant nothing to her or else they wouldn't have married in the first place, Betty also had her own issues that got in the way but like Don, she couldn't open up to him

People in close relationships like marriage influence each other, for better or for worse. By Don’s own admission, Betty used to laugh a lot before she married him. The subtle slights, the being taken for granted, the constant in her face cheating, these amount to abuse and made her feel small and powerless, made her someone that needed psychotherapy. The worst part is she was a devoted, loving woman and he is inherently without malice. Regardless of how much you love a person, you should never be in a relationship where you are not valued. I was very glad that she made the move to cut him out. But even after that there was a lot of heartbreak for her. I find Betty to be gutsy for her decisions and respectable for her loving and devoted nature. All her bitterness and brittleness is a direct result of the psychological abuse involved in the relationship.
