Just a suggestion; the next time you get a gift, instead of keeping it in the “pristine condition” and then forgetting about it- take either a video it or photo of gift and make a file on your computer for those pics. Unpack and put away said items. In the end, you will still have the memory both in your head and on video or film for you to enjoy. Plus, you get to use what was given to you without guilt. Just an idea! 💕.

I'm not a hoarder, but I used to keep gifts (especially consumables) in perfect condition for a long time before I used them. I think it stemmed from the fact that when I was a kid my sister was a very social person who had a lot of friends who were gift-givers and my friends were not gift-givers at all so she always got a lot of new things and I didn't. Marie Kondo said in one of her books that if you get something new, you should open it/take the tags off right away to kind of "welcome" it to your home and I thought that was kind of a nice way to think about it. =)

When it comes to master bedrooms I think people fall into one of two camps: people like me who put themselves first...the rest of my house could be falling down or covered in filth and my master bedroom would be minimal and tranquil. Then there are people who put others ahead of themselves, who would much rather have welcoming common areas for guests and family members than worry about having a tranquil space for just themselves. I always assume that someone whose master bedroom stays messier than the rest of the house has a generous heart and want to make sure others are comfortable and feel at home.

you always seem to pile things on your floor, obviously the goal in your bedroom would be a much more minimal space, however, its good to have a proper landing area for things that need attention. for example a letters inbox tray or a chair to throw only semi-dirty clothes over. Maybe in your space you might add a trunk to the bottom of your bed and try to keep any clutter to just on top of that trunk (with no clutter allowed in front of the clothes you need to access daily) - by assigning a specific space like the size of the trunk top, you can then say, ok i dont need to always do something immediately, but once this allotted space is full i need to do a 15 minute hotspot on it- before it takes over the whole room. Just a suggestion! Anyway i just wanted to say how inspiring i find your videos, i am not a hoarder myself, but i do find myself easily taken back by really intense big problems and i get anxious at big tasks. Watching you split this impossible task of de-hoarding the whole house and basement into teeny managable chunks really inspires me to tackle scary tasks in my own life and keep chipping away at them - even when they seem initially impossible. So thankyou for that

I watch all your videos but I don't usually comment. I just wanted to say that it's awesome that you're doing the master bedroom! You deserve to have a lovely space to relax in. I'm a 3rd gen hoarder and I had to work a lot on my mental health to become more organized and be able to let things go instead of waiting for the horror of the just in case. I used to do the same thing you did with gifts! It was so precious to me that it was so lovingly and beautifully put together. I changed that by making it a game to put it all away within a day or two and learned to be so excited and satisfied to put things where they belong so I can see and USE them! it took me a long time to use precious gifts because I didn't want it to go but listening to you talk about how you changed that mindset by understanding people wanted to bless you by having them use them really helped me! Thank you for all you do!

Oh my gosh, I saw your updated house tour & finally just finished binging/catching up to where you're at in your journey now. Sorry long comment but I have tons of thoughts, I also recently found I had ADHD (+ my grandma was a hoarder, my mom OCD, and I was a bit of both). Also the heart and emotions aspect I'm learning are also related to it. So glad I recognized some things when I was entering college, and watching this is like where I was, where I would be, and also a mix of where I am now. ANYWays, just throughout wanted to comment each time how I'm so proud of you! It's so nice to see someone with the similar things that I'm even discovering for myself. It is a process, and so many things at once--the grieving, the letting go, the opening up to bring space to the present, etc. I know for me it's like yay! getting free stuff and not spending more $ when actually USING and living with the things i hold now. I have been sliding back and starting to struggle recently and that is why i just want to say you are killing it! YES build those maintenance habits, yes declutter, and as you continue, you can process and spend time with the things that matter and more importantly start living with yourself instead of the items that are stuck in what could-be's. I don't know if that made sense, but just thank you :)

Not a hoarder but I love bags, although, I have been cleaning those out. For the porch gift, I would put it all away and then you'll think of your friend every time you use those items. One thing id like to say is having a place for everything, so say if you have dirty clothes get a hamper and throw the clothes in there. If theres papers have a file for them and label what papers are and what year. If everything has a spot then it will be easier to put things away. Just an idea
@eavening41494 жыл бұрын
I store things in bags also, but they are permanent tasks. I have 1 bag for bills which has checks, envelopes, stamps, and everything I need, 1 bag for deposits with ledger, deposit slips and everything, 1 bag of statements for data entry into the accounting software and a list of what accounts need to be entered with monthly check-off spaces. This is my method to make sure doing all of these tasks are as easy as possible. These bags all have their dedicated spaces on a bench. I would hang them up if I had a good spot where I could drill into the stud. I also put individual projects into bags for easy portability of a lot of documents. When I do this, I write a label and attach it to the handles so I don't have to rummage to know what is inside the bag.

Pausing because I have been binging your videos and am so impressed by your journey and growth! I am not “naturally” organized, but I became organized at a young age as a coping mechanism for my own anxiety, ocd and adhd. I like to say I have a messy mind so I have to keep things neat. So I really do believe people can learn to be organized- I’m living proof! Now I do professional organizing as a side hustle on the weekends! A few ideas... 1. The less items that have “home” on open horizontal surfaces, the better. For example, your floor is a horizontal surface. To keep from looking cluttered and make cleaning and upkeep easier, try to not store things on the floor. Even your jewelry case has big chunky feet- can Handy Hubby hang the case directly on the wall? This also applies in the kitchen and storing as little as possible on counters- put the knives in a drawer if possible and ditch the knife block! They are supposed to be terrible for germs anyway. 2. Things you use regularly need to be easy to get to in order for you to put them away easily- the Thirty One bags are too high for you to reach easily, so of course you didn’t put them back. Ain’t nobody got time for that! I would suggest moving those bags, since you’ve mentioned a few times that they are more frequently used, to the laundry room. That top shelf can be for seasonal items. 3. Embrace the dumping zones- this sounds kind of odd, but houses and their families have a natural rhythm that try as we might, we can’t break. So when we are constantly picking up things that have been moved out of their assigned home, often that means we have actually assigned the wrong home! This is big for me and my OCD, and how I “think” something should be. For example, if your paper clutter consistently collects on the dining room table, it’s a sign that’s where your command center/paper station should be. (Maybe not on the table but definitely in the room). This would be more natural to keep things in their homes. In my home I fought this for the longest time on the “key drop” zone- finally I had to give in and realize it made me happier to at least have the keys in the dang bowl instead of scattered on the counter, which saved me constantly hanging peoples keys on the pretty key hook no one used. Phew! I have been holding that in for awhile until I got caught up with more recent videos! Sorry for the wordiness, I just love helping others find successful systems and strategies to keep their spaces calm and under control, which is just such a nicer energy to enjoy in a home. The biggest thing when setting up a system is to “work smarter not harder”! Again, I find you so amazing and inspirational and can’t wait to see what you conquer next!

You are learning and recognizing where your Hotspot and dropzones are which is great and its good to not come down hard on yourself bc you are moving forward. One help in these hot and drop areas around the house not just in bedroom, put a laundry basket or some crate, basket, etc and thats the amount of space u have to fill up and once its full or make it a weekly tidy but u go thru the basket and deal with everything u put in there. Creating a boundary on those spaces was a massive helpful learning tool for my space and getting into rhythm of taking action on items. Also baskets are easy to push to the side to give u access to closet Also its really great to see u go round and add your items to the tubs and homes you've created for like items👍

I know this has been said heaps of times already, but watching stuff get put away was so satisfying! I think it might help to decide on some places in your house to have as designated hot spots or landing zones. Maybe a basket or tote in each room and then when it's full you just pick it up and walk through the house putting the contents back in their rightful places. I try to do that in my house but I have a partner who prefers to do a big tidy up once every week or two, rather than picking everything up as soon as he's finished with it.

Good job on not letting the fact that things slid back a little create feelings of guilt. Guilt can be so debilitating. Praise yourself more for recognizing that now is the time to sort it out. :) Have you thought about having a cute container for trash in the bedroom? I have a small cute plastic tote in my bedroom so when I unpack things in the bedroom, plastic bags and receipts etc go straight in there. Then the night before rubbish day I go through the container and sort it into recycling or the garbage bins. I have another bin like it in the lounge and bathroom and use it for the same thing. Basically it means whenever I tidy i don't create a trashy trashy pile as I deal with it every week (and it takes 5-10 minutes a week to sort through all the bins)

And giiirrrrll my bedroom looks just like yours, I have no idea why my bedroom is a catch all 😂😂 Something different in this video you showed putting stuff away, that was new and I really enjoyed it! It was like filming the follow through and we got to experience it! Yay!

I am short and therefore I do not use high spaces. I never take a stool, too, and the stuff stays on the floor. Think about giving the high shelves to your husband and take the spaces you can reach without effort. That is what works for us.

I used to work at Walmart in Kansas, they would recycle the store hangers not only from Walmart but other stores too. If you don't have a good way of recycling those you could call you're local Walmart and see if they do in your state

It was great to see you putting all the things where they needed to go in the end. More work for you to film, but we get to see that you really did it! So, thanks for putting in that extra effort!

I loved seeing you put things away! And I loved that you put the gift away. Now you can think of your friend every time you reach for a mug!

You have such nice things, and beautiful clothes that you should display it like a boutique, so you feel every day like you are shopping for a new item, and you can see what you have. The room is a cozy place, where you rest of a day of work or fun, so you should try to keep it nice, relaxing, and romantic for you and your hubby. You have to try to have a home for everything, so when you get at home, you put your beautiful things at their place. You are getting there, every day, step by step. You look so pretty and happy. Can´t wait until you start to put your room pretty as you are.

Positive note, you seem to have your organized areas sorted. Yes, you cluttered the bedroom back up BUT THIS TIME WAS DIFFERENT THAN LAST because with your organized spaces you were able to slip things into their rightful areas without decision making or much thought. That dear heart is PROGRESS and my heart sings for you! Keep up the good fight because you are WINNING. Go buy yourself and your hubby a beautiful new bed cover, that will light a motivation fire like the new carpeting.

What about taking a pic of the gift before putting items to use? Then u can pull up the pic for the memory n when u r ready, hit delete on the pic! Besides...every time u use the item the memory of the gift blesses u w/ every use!❤

We have seen you use those bags often this summer. Maybe you should find something on the lower shelf in your closet that you don’t use as often and put that on the top shelf. Then the totes are on the lower shelf so you will have an easier time putting it back. I am short so I try to keep all spaces that I need a step stool as long term seasonal storage. You are Doug a great job

When it comes to gifts, they are both a sign of affection and a terrible curse. I am not a hoarder but I do have some beloved collections. I also live in a small condo so I have to edit my possessions a lot or I get swamped. I love the feeling of getting gifts but I seldom have a place for them. Of course I feel like a real jerk if I get rid of them. So I have asked my close friends and family to get me gifts that are consumable or just skip giving me a gift altogether. I know they love me without gifts. You might want to enlist your people in your journey - let them know how much you value gifts but that you are a recovering hoarder so gifts are problematic Thank you for letting us share in your efforts. I look forward to every new video.
