What’s poppin, Sky Guys! It’s me MT and welcome back to the Heavy Spoilers show! Hayden Christianssen is back doin the lightsaber spinnies in glorious 4K all while teaching his former padawan Ahsoka a lesson from beyond the grave. But what exactly was that lesson? And how did Ahsoka’s journey through the past give her a key piece of knowledge that will help her in her future? Let’s dive into it together, my Nerd Baby Padawans!
Alright so…the main lesson that Anakin was trying to teach Ahsoka was to stop being afraid of the mark Anakin Skywalker left on her…because that Fear has been causing her to doubt herself and become a less effective master to her padawan and a weaker warrior on the field. And this is sort of teased during Ahsoka’s battle with Baylan in Episode 4.

I can't say that was the World Between Worlds or if it was just Ahsoka's memory creating the World Between Worlds in a near death experience. Anakin may have just been a creation of her mind. Remember that Ahsoka had been there before. I hope they never explain or confirm that it is one or the other.

while the light saber fight was cool, huyang saying "they just never listen" hit me in a different way. I didn't expect a robot to have such dissapointment, loss of hope, and desperation all in the same voice. They really put a lot more personality into huyang as the show has gone on.

Yup. Letting go of guilt, fear, self-hate, doubt. Characteristics that can lead one down the path of the dark side. Anakin knows this better than anyone. Ahsoka got a taste of both sides and chose the side that allows her to live a life of freedom

The sign of a great mentor is being able to push all your buttons and then pinpoint the issue, and turn it into a lesson. Great point. I felt like Huyang's "Perhaps it is time to begin again?" that they used in one of the trailers was also a really important line for this show (and this time period, where it looks like they are on the brink of another war, they will have to fight once again). And perhaps a meta response to JJ's 'This will begin to make things right' line from the start of TFA.

She was afraid that because she was trained by Anakin/Vader that she would end up becoming like him. The first 2 places Anakin took her to. But I believe that the battle of Mandolore scene, she took him there to show him how much she had changed as he wasn't there originally. An amazing episode and we still haven't seen Thrawn yet!. 7:02 She literally let go of her past regrets, fears, and hate by letting go of the weapon that came to symbolize death as much as defender of attachments. In other words, letting go of her rigid philosophy of sacrificing loved ones and her relationships with them for the greater good.

I don’t think she bested Anikin. Because this is training and there’s a lesson to be learned, I think he led her to the moment where she had to make a choice. Take his life (metaphorically speaking) or live her life.

Exactly- the communication / conversation of the red lightsaber duel is as follows 1. Anakin realizes the thing holding her back is her fear and guilt at what he became (if he were just her subconscious he would already know this. But he discovers it through conversation) 2. Anakin says “you have learned nothing.” Ahsoka says “don’t say that” I think Anakin is actually feeling hurt that even in death she is still afraid of him. And it makes him angry. But this training also has a format. A. Show the student what they are supposed to learn (blue saber) B. Review lessons already learned in life and provide context. C. Test the student I think originally Anakin was always going to test her again with a blue lightsaber But he realized to truly test her, he would need to unleash his dark side … and bring out hers 3. There are multiple places in the red saber duel where Anakin could have easily just cut Ahsoka down- these communicate to Ahsoka that she needs to fight harder 4. He tells her she lacks conviction in Vaderkin voice This is a very old Samurai proverb in context “one chance one life” - act and decide - live in the moment If you don’t decide you will no longer have a choice 5. He tells Ahsoka time to die Anakin is acting as Ahsoka’s personal god of death - much like the wolf in Puss in Boots 6. In his final two swings, the first one is real. Its a killing cut, but Ahsoka evades. The final stab vader-kin overextends himself Ahsoka uses his training to win And then she demonstrates she has control of her own darkness

Ain't no way she's beating Anakin/Vader, in fully realized Chosen One form!!! 😂😂😂 That's like saying Luke actually bested Vader on the 2nd Death Star, when what actually bested Vader, was his conflict (nerfing his connection to the Dark Side) and more importantly his love for his son. Anakin is definitely just training/trying to teach a lesson to Ahsoka here. I think Anakin here, in this form,is stronger than anyone in Star Wars.

It makes sense why anakin ignored ahsokas attempts to bring up his crimes or what he did. He didnt want the lesson be about him, it was about her. He already suffered the guilt of what he did over the years and in the afterlife. He didnt want ahsoka to make the mistake to dwell in her own mistakes and the past either. She needed to let go and accept the past. But also remember that anakin wasnt always vader.

My opinion of it was that Anakin wanted Ashoka to understand and accept that she had darkness inside of her, and once he realized she was not getting his lesson he purposely pulled it out if her using his own darkness, and also helped her understand and let go of her past and accept the balance of Dark and Light within her and to use it to live and to protect those she loves and cares about. This really was Anakins force ghost, and he truly is now the balance between the two being able to seamlessly switch between the two to teach his lesson.

I really love this video explanation, it helped battle some criticisms of episode five. It was pointed out though that Ahsoka already seemed to have forgiven Anakin, as we see her talking fondly about him to Luke in the book of Boba Fett. I understand that may be different than her fears of producing a new Vader, but it still seems like she’s already gone through these emotions before since she was able to focus on the good of Anakin when speaking with his son, and not let the shadow of Vader haunt that moment.

She needed to face her guilt over him becoming Vader. She realized it was within him all along.

Acceptance is what the lesson was. She did not control Anakin's decision to become Vader anymore than she was responsible for the falling of the Jedi. Anakin allowed his anger to consume him and the Jedi followed the republic instead of the force. She noticed both but had no way of changing any of it. She had to accept that even if she screamed to the top of the mountain it was not going to move.

Anakin’s ‘true’ lesson seems to have been lost on a lot of other Star Wars KZbinrs that I subscribe to. (I feel like MT and Filoni share the same brain.) The most important quote by Anakin in this episode: “But you’re more than that… because I’m more than that.” This analysis by MT completely captures the essence of that lesson

Yeah, I feel like the, 'you have to fight' interpretation is very surface level and on the nose, and that 'legacy' is very much a deeper theme. To me it was kind of like Anakin teaching Ahsoka what he learned from Luke, and Ahsoka having that same mindset as Luke in ROTJ, even in the way they both threw down the lightsaber (which itself is symbolic of legacy) unlike Anakin in ROTS. Could almost say it's Anakin coming to terms with being redeemed and sharing that with Ahsoka.

Your review really knocks it out of the park. I get it now! Anakin is essentially saying I helped you grow into a warrior, but I never changed who you are as an empathetic soul who always highly values the lives of those around her. Even when Anakin comes at her in the end with fire in his eyes, she chooses to live by fighting back to save her life AND his life. That's just who she is and if she can accept that, then there's still hope for her yet.
