He’s the only reason why I tuned in. He was better than Kylo Ren and Snoke. Hell the fact that he carry’s himself like a knight similar in poise as Dooku did adds to the image that he’s a very mature and mentally sound person. The fact that he kept his word to Sabine was even more interesting still and shows a set of principles made him a fascinating villain. It was a fresh take on the dark Jedi trope and Ray Stevenson absolutely killed it. This was probably the closest Disney will ever get to an interesting villain.

Baylans fighting style is so incredibly unique, to me it looks like he has mastered the ability to very slowly let out the dark side during a fight, as if he can increase the power withdrawn from it on command, without getting consumed by it. I'll try to explain: 1:09 Baylan looks cautious and nervous, but clear of mind, he is fighting Ahsoka with his past Jedi training and knowledge. His next few strikes and dodges are direct, powerful and according to the book, but can't seem to catch Ahsoka off guard. 1:34 Baylan realizes he needs to do something to get the upper hand and you can see the exact moment when he decides to "fuel himself up", the music gets going, his entire style suddenly changes as if he is fighting with natural instinct. You can see how his fighting style is still very Jedi-like, but you can also see how he has given his own twist to it over the years. He still looks slightly nervous, but not cautious anymore. 2:28 Ahsoka lands some kicks and gets Baylan down on the ground, he realizes again that his previous efforts were not enough and lets even more of the dark side in him. 2:45 Baylan stands back up and comes for Ahsoka again, when he enters the frame, his entire stance looks menacing, he stopped being cautious and is now also not nervous anymore, the confidence he has in that walk towards Ahsoka is terrifying, this is close to peak Baylan. 3:10 When he sees Ahsoka throw Shin against the rock, he is absolutely done with her, he knows he has to end the fight now. He gets Ahsoka down on the ground in 2 strikes, and when Ahsoka blocks the 3rd she even has to use the force to help. At this point he has basically won the fight, and upon realizing Sabine doesn't want to destroy the map, he takes his chance. now go back to the first timestamp, 1:09, tell me that isn't a completely different Baylan standing there. I love Baylan, and Ray Stevenson executed him flawlessly, may he rest in peace.
@BlkBoyAwesome2 ай бұрын
The reason for the heavy strikes and over powering of her with his blade has been explained that he and Shin lightsabers crystals are unique in the sense where they give weight to the light saber blade. Which is also why they are orange and have that unique sound upon activation. Traditionally - which you probably already know - the only thing of any weight when wielding a lightsaber is the hilt. The blade itself has no weight. But Balons and Shins do. I thought this bit of lore was pretty awesome. Shin and Baylon were two new great additions to the Star Wars universe.
@Urizen7772 ай бұрын
@@BlkBoyAwesome I've only heard that they wanted Baylan to fight like a medieval knight wielding a longsword as opposed to Ahsoka's more dexterous kendo style of fighting, for choreography's sake. Was the actual weight and the origin of these orange lightsabers officially confirmed? I quite like the idea of lightsabers that are actually heavier to wield.
@BlkBoyAwesome2 ай бұрын
@@Urizen777 From Screen rant: According to the sourcebook, great lightsabers were a unique kind of lightsaber that were larger and heavier than traditional sabers. Much like the large great swords of the Middle Ages, great lightsabers were difficult to wield one-handed, and instead forced the user to use both hands. This allowed the user of a great lightsaber to channel their strength into powerful, long strokes. While the saber may unassumingly look similar to any other lightsaber, the reinforced hilt made each strike deadly. Ahsoka had never faced anyone with a great lightsaber before, which was likely why she was overpowered in the duel.
@BlkBoyAwesome2 ай бұрын
@@Urizen777 Also from Screen Rant: Baylan Skoll’s lightsaber is different, though. It evidently does have a certain heaviness to it, one that is more pronounced when the lightsaber is active. It's likely Baylan’s lightsaber is something known as a Great Lightsaber, a rare weapon specially designed for larger and physically stronger Jedi. The hilts were heavier to accommodate a longer blade. It’s also reminiscent of the crossguard lightsaber Cal Kestis eventually wields in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, which is noticeably heavier and less agile.
@Urizen7772 ай бұрын
@@BlkBoyAwesome Very interesting. thanks for the info! As someone who is a HEMA swordfighter, I like this idea, as the difference in weight and type changes the way you wield the weapon completely. As a sidesword fighter as well as well as a sabre fighter, I've sparred against people with longswords, rapiers, and even smallswords and it's very fun how the dynamic changes and the approach to fighting has to be adjusted.

I love Baylan. He feels like someone who could’ve been in the original trilogy. @@PhantomHarley This is not true at all. Speed is super important. Especially in the context of star wars, where you have superhuman beings with precognition and blades that can sever limbs with a mere flick of the wrist. With lightsabers a foe who can outspeed you will beat you because all they need is one opening. With real swords, to an extent, there's margin for error, armor, etc, etc. Outside of very special circumstances (IE: Cortosis or beskar) most of those factors don't exist.

What's strange is there are parts of this fight that feel real and restrained and intense, and scenes that make me shake my head because of how weird they feel. At 1:49 Ahsoka does the lamest half-leap off a rock (and makes me look like I could be a Jedi) right as the "oh no what's gonna happen" music chimes in. At 1:56 she literally steps back, waits for Baylan to do a super scripted force pull on a rock, and just stands for several seconds there while it comes at her. At 2:29, Baylan loses the will to live and just takes three slow kicks to the torso. My man does NOT use the force once other than the rock pull, even though he could use it to stop Ahsoka from getting the map. And GIRL WHY ARE YOU HOLDING THE MAP AS IT MELTS YOUR HAND AT 2:35??!! AND THIS JEDI DOES NOT USE THE FORCE WHILE HER OPPONENT IS TURNED AWAY FOR LIKE TEN SECS AT 3:02. WHY. This may seem nitpicky and I never finished the series, but watching this feels just like the first episode-deliberately slow at the expense of character consistency and brainpower. Don't make one of the coolest and most competent jedi into a smoldering, slow, silly fighter. My girl went against Darth Maul and lived to tell about it, but here looks like she got arthritis and tried out pirouettes instead of swordfighting. Edited for timestamp

I don't know enough about the choreography that went into this. Everyone in the comments keeps mentioning martial arts and kendo. However, what I'm seeing from Baylan is primarily a more medieval-European fighting style, as if he was using a heavy broadsword. Again, I don't know for sure. Personally, I always thought the sword techniques in Star Wars were more Japanese inspired.

The only issue I have with this fight is they almost stand around at times during the fight. It would be nice to see them go in for killing blows instead of standing there waiting for the next move. Take for instance when Baylan picks up the rock at 1:56 to 1:59 Ashoka just stands there watching him pick up the rock and fling it at her. In that moment you could’ve had Ahsoka go in for a strike, Baylan block it and then throw it at Ahsoka. She could’ve either quickly cut it in two or got hit by it and quickly have to recover.

In this case he had the strength advantage too, which allowed him to essentially bully Ahsoka while running a solid defense that her Form IV/Form V wasn't working against since she is permanently a "jabber" in technique. Playback at x1.4 Speed and the fight choreography is perfect for jedis of their level. Ahsoka series really needed more ferocity and speed. It failed to make the audience feel the intent to kill from the characters. Dialogue and plot was fine.

I haven't watched this show yet because Disney™ Star™ Wars™ isn't real in my mind, but this show screams old samurai movies, & it's winning me over

i am not so sure Asoka is dead as it never shows her body or says she is.

Why Ahsoka used Djemso and Juyo while she used Ataru and Shien idk

I'm finally watching this series, and I notices something interesting right from the start (I'm on 1st episode still). Ahsoka acts a lot like Anakin did. I'm not sure if it's on purpose or what, but it feels like the actress watched the prequel movies and copied him a bit which would be fking amazing because if you think about it, Ahsoka would act a lot like Anakin. She was really young and impressionable and copying his every move, so when I saw Ahsoka just standing in a room talking to that other chic I'm just like "wtf she's acting just like anakin". I can already tell I'm going to like this show, unlike most star wars stuff these days.

Baylon's technique is like a mixture of Darth Vader's technique and a old Anakin

I still hate how Ahsoka holds the grip of her lightsabers in this show, but damn, they dressed it up pretty.

Baylan Skoll reminds me of Count Dooku because of his mannerisms.

What gets me is anyone ever, when ready to fight, are on the balls of their feet. Watching this fight, they were on their heels the entire time, gotta make it more believable.

i know that Ahsoka was distracted here and that probably affected her performance but still,you gotta give my man Baylan some credit dude defeated someone who went toe to toe with Darth Maul....some decades ago!

You can really feel the power in Baylan’s strikes

You got to love how like for the first 2 minutes Baylan and Ahsoka are pretty much just feeling each other out of course Ahsoka makes the first move. She reminds us why she's one of the biggest badasses is star wars history.

Obi One, Anakin and Ashoka all failed to learn the lessons Baylon did. Fight with both sides of the force, let your emotions strengthen your strikes. But Obi One and Ashoka refused to lean into their emotions and even when they did they shut it down. Anakin never learned balance either and went full Into the other side and let only anger and emotions to guide him with no calm.

these new lightsabers look like glowing props instead of actual beams of destructive energy. They cheaped out

I really hated Sabin in this series. She looked like she was the worst Mandalorian and Jedi at the same time! Her skills with fire arms as well as with the light saber were completely underwhelming. Baylan Skoll on the other hand was such an awesome, refreshing villain. I especially love that his saber actually isn't red like the one of Vader or every other Sith. It's more like orange with reflects in a way that he is not a typical dark side user. And the actor was just spot on. It's such a pity he died way too early.

You can travel at light speed and still need to use swords to settle a dispute. If the force is so powerful I can use it to direct laser blasters like a smart bomb and bend it round corners without a need to get that close to my enemy
