Touching on Maul's inability to close a duel, he seems to want to go for the flashy finisher instead of the simplest. In this duel he could have cut the beam Ahsoka was on causing her to fall but instead opted to swing at her allowing her to disarm and force him off balance due to his robot legs. In Obi-wans duel against him in Ep 1 he taunts Obi instead of just force pushing him to his death. In the last duel against Obi Maul tries to kill him just like how Maul killed Qui-gon which results in Obi-wan knowing exactly what is going to happen and countering Maul. Maul goes for the flashy when he could just go for the simple.

Tyranidus I guess he did let his arrogance with the beam get the best of him what a pity ,thank you for your insight. Also this is why sidous deemed ankain over maul bc he remembered that maul let his arrogance get the best of him & thought vader would be different truly ironic i love it haha.

TheyCallMeJosh Hwang I would agree with you lol except for dooku bc he was arrogant in a way bc anakin says “my powers have doubled since the last time we meet” then dooku said “great twice the pride double the fall ” which eventually turned out to be true in that sense ,but if it wasn’t for sidous telling dooku not to kill anakin then its plausible that dooku might’ve won i mean he cut off Anakins arm in attack of clones which is just a stepping stone & you could also argue that grievous might’ve killed Anakin if sidous didn’t want him alive ,but since obi wan was with him they had a fighting chance if that was the case.

I say Maul is the winner, and here's my deciding factor. During the duel he disarmed Ahsoka twice. He didn't want to kill her and wanted to form an alliance to ruin Palpatine's plan. In his eyes everyone was going to die, that much was obvious. So there was no reason to waste time trying to kill someone who basically was condemned anyway. I do believe Ahsoka was a little over confident in her abilities though. Maul was one of Palpatine's best apprentices, he killed Qui-Gon. And Obi-Wan struggled with Maul multiple times during the Clone War. Maul even technically beat Obi-Wan during their duel on Naboo in The Phantom Menace. Maul has way more experience under his belt than Ahsoka. And some people don't give him enough credit. I mean did you see the way he just casually redirected those blaster shots... Anyway this duel was fantastic but when it comes down to who would win in a fight to the death. I'm giving it to Maul.

Maul is definitely better than her. Ahsoka is gifted but, she isnt even top 100 jedi in season 7. Maul was holding back. Ahsoka was lucky she wasnt on the frontlines like most of the jedi council member. Most of the powerful jedi were on the frontlines during Order 6 with hundred of clones behind them went they got the Order. There is a green alien insectoid jedi knight who killed about 20 clones that attacked him. We saw Cal's master, Vos, Krell, and others kill jedi much easier than her. Keep in mind there are thousands of jedi in star wars before Order 66. Now after Order 66 she is probably top 10 or 20 jedi because only about 100 survive anyway. Now I do think Ahsoka would surpass Maul during Rebels. She is 34 and has master level experience by then. Ahsoka has knight level experience right now and she has good feats but nothing on Maul's level. She lost to Barris, lost to Grievous, and struggled against Pre Vizsula just a year ago in season 5. She also lost to bo Katarn. Every jedi fought in the clone wars so that's not an advantage for her. It was a tough war for everyone. Ahsoka is gifted and she benefits having Anakin as a master but people overhyped that. Sometimes a jedi is way stronger or weaker than his or her master. Vos is one of the strongest jedi in canon but, there is nothing special about his master in combat. Dooku is a level above Qui Gon and Yoda is a level above Dooku. Vos is a level above Aayla Secura. Also keep in kind that Maul is very troubled about Order 66 and is terrified of Sidious. Remember that his mother also just died and his brother before that. Ahsoka is great but, is at least a level below Maul. She never even best anyone like Qui Gon, Aayla Secura, Plo Koon, Ventrese, season 5 Savage, Grievous, or Shaak Ti. She hasn't even beat someone like Barris. Feats matter, but I still wish they would have handled it differently. They should have had some clones or death watch troopers help her win. And though Maul was more powerful he did lose to Ahsoka. He let her kick him and throw him during the initial engagement. And kept fighting when he disarmed her plus she threw him off in the end of the fight. Now it Maul tried he would have beaten her, but would still struggle because he's mentally unstable with the loss of his mother and brother and fear of Order 66. But he would beat her in 2 minutes if he was 100%, the same guy that took over Mandalore, or Maul from TPM.

Maul was the winner, he had two chances to defeat her but he didn’t want to. He was the superior duelist and that was shown when he disarmed her twice. Ahsoka looked like she pushed him but she was way to tired. It was maul’s overconfidence that lost him the fight. But if he was fighting to kill, he would’ve won.
@richardkenan2891

What prevented Maul from defeating Ahsoka? Maul did. He did not win, because his own fatally flawed plan to tempt her to the Dark Side prevented him. He wanted a victory he was unable to claim, and so did not win even the victory he might have been able to win. Maul being stupid does not give him the victory - it specifically prevented him from gaining the victory. Had he had a better plan, it would have been a very different fight - but the only one to blame for that is Maul himself.

He disarmed her, she lost her sabers, disarming doesn't always mean a win. Plot armour is always a factor, however just because you've disarmed, doednt mean they can take a kill, disarming someone is usually because you've got the opponent in a position where they can no longer hold their weapon, however they can still move, and the enemys move wasn't a killing blow, it was a disarment, ahsoka once she lost her sabers, multiple times, she evaded the incoming follow up attack. He then went for the kill and ahsoka utilised the fact he was using staff and countered it. You could say he had an opportunity too kill her, but I don't think he did. Just my opinion.

Maul wasn’t trying to kill her, and he also didn’t seem to care too much about the outcome. He lives for revenge at this point, and his plans to foil sidious had all failed, meaning he has no purpose to live at this point. Plan 1: kill anakin, failed as anakin didn’t show up Plan 2: recruit ahsoka, also failed, so maul might as well quit wasting time and run away or just die cuz he has no chance alone against sidious or all those clones

@@user-fb5ir3zz8l He also had a tough time vs Obi Wan on Phantom menace, who was also officially a "padawan" on his way to becoming a knight (and who was also, at the time, a form 4 specialist). I think it's very clear that Maul wins, most people would agree on that. But since he doesn't want to kill Ahsoka the duel turns into an exchange to "prove a point", and because of that she gets the chance to recover from several disarm strikes and tough blows. In the end she got the upperhand in very much the same way Obi Wan did on Twin Suns, by using Maul's ego against him (and his long ass staff lol). I think Maul just has a bad time with heights and ledges, it must be an inside joke at Lucasfilm at this point. A great example of this is when Kanan manages to outsmart Maul on Malachor and throws him off of a cliff lol. Kanan never got to Ahsoka's skill level, his master was killed when he had just become a Padawan. He's basically on the same skill/experience level as SE1 TCW ahsoka.

MS_OfficeSpecialist Maul didn’t have a hard time with padawan kenobi, he was just momentarily caught off guard by kenobi’s sudden spike in aggressiveness and once he recovered and got used to it, he quickly defeated kenobi. Just like how vader was caught of guard by Luke’s sudden spike in power in ROTJ but couldn’t recover and regain his composure quickly because of his cybernetics weighing him down. Filioni ruined maul by making him a blabbermouth villain who gets owned by noobs. Maul was supposed to be mostly silent, cunning and deadly. But filioni took all that away so he can have maul blabber on about his evil plans and typical bad guy banter.

There are many factors in a fight: experience, training, skill, enviroment, mind-set, luck and many more. If we look purely at the outcome then Asoka won. As they say: "The winner is the one left standing". And, yes Maul is still alive however, Asoka achived her objective(to capture Maul), while he did not achive ethier of his two objectives( to recruit Asoka/Escape). However, if we ignore objectives and the final result and focus on other areas for instance who was more skill or who dominated the fight then a very diffrent picture can be painted. Ignoring plot armor, they both had that. I would say Maul was dominate for most of the fight. He clearly held back hoping to prove a point and convice Asoka to join him(Honestly considering how much he does this I am started to think that Maul is just lonely). As a result of this Asoka came out on top of the first enagement, by kicking him through a window. I would say however Maul was the more dominate figher in this section. In terms of experience, honestly I don't know. Asoka has gotten so much experience over the Clone Wars. however Maul is older and was trained almostly exclusively in saber combat(if my understanding of his origin is correct). He did however have a long period of time where we did nothing other than become a spider for a while(maybe that where he learnt to weave his intricate plans). In terms of, training they are both at a massively high level. Honestly I have rambled for to long, and for that I am sorry. Overall, I would say that the overall victor was Asoka, but the better fighter was Maul and in a straigh fight to the death I would say Maul takes it 8 to 9 times out of 10. However nethier were at their best in this fight, Asoka was, I would imagine, distracted by what Maul said about Skywalker. Meanwhile, Maul wished to recurit Asoka which in the end stopped him from killing her right after disarming her, so he could attempt to recruit her again. this gave her time to collect herself which lead to the result we got. That thats my 2(honestly is a bit more that two with this lengh) cents on the topic. Sorry for any spelling/grammer errors. I wrote this on my phone.

I agree completely and it's nice to see someone who remembers Maul was lost, almost mindless and without legs and then became spider-like for most of his years as a sith while Ahsoka was commander in a war fighting many battles making her a bit more experienced than him. During a battle to the death, Maul is the clear victor 8-10. However if we go into Rebels I do believe that at that point Ahsoka would beat Maul in a battle to the death. Basically the deciding factor here is Ahsoka's youth.

@@masonguthrie1257 I, having though about this more since writing this comment, kind of agree with you. Although I meant, my 8-9/10 to be a straight fight to the death with nothing else other than thier skill and experiance being the deciding factor(sorry for not making that clear). Even now I still think maul wins that enagement(if will look at both the characters in this moment) but I do think that its still higher than a 6/10. Maybe a 7.5/10. I am basing this of the training Mau recived,being an assasin who was taught 80% lightsaber skill and 20% force abilites( not actually stats there, but form my reading sidious heavily favored his training towards the physical aspect). This should( in theory) give him an edge in a straight death match.. Thats why I think it is more heavily favored towards him. I could be way of the mark with this through. I can however see arguments being made for both sides so. Out of coursesity. What do you think mauls win rate would look like? If they were to fight one on one, in a completly flat neuatral location. Also again sorry if this is hard to read.

Principal difference here is, Maul had several opportunities to finish her during their fight, he choosed not to, Ahsoka didn't have any opportunity to take the upper hand, so much less kill him, except in the end, thanks of him rejecting kill her one more time.

Mason Guthrie Just because you were trained by good people doesn’t make yourself good. Darth Malgus trained Darth Karrid and she was a poor duelist compared to the Sith Master who trained her and was worshipped by Sidious to be the greatest Sith warrior in the ancient Sith Order. And at least Ahsoka had the determination to capture Maul, even if it wasn’t killing she wanted to beat Maul in order to then him in, the latter was simply uninterested and therefore lacked the motivation like Ahsoka to keep the duel, which was evident by the fact that Maul for a Juyo specialist was the one going on the defensive in the 2nd part of the duel. Let me remind you that if you believe Ahsoka was aggressive, Maul’s form, Juyo according to the Jedi Path Manual Guide have stated that Juyo was the most aggressive out of all saber forms and mastery can even obliterate the defence of a Soresu Master. Maul was noted to be a practitioner of Juyo, Niman and likely used Teras Kasi as his substitution for the second form that is reconnmended before picking up Juyo, the fact that he deflected Ahsoka blitzkrieg fighting style while himself being a master of an offensive form rather than a defensive form shows how Maul>Ahsoka. And the fact that an uninterested, unmotivated Darth Maul disarmed 3 times in the duel, which in the Jedi Path is noted indication of superiority in duels, further demonstrates that Maul could have defeated Ahsoka if he was indeed trying.

1.) "Ahsoka has been training throughout the entire war. She's earned this." - Fighting droids for 3 years isn't the same as dueling. Maul was specifically designed to duel Jedi Masters and trained in that specialization for 15 years. If you trained 5 times more than someone else then you should be massively superior. Also, Ahsoka hasn't trained or touched a lightsaber in months (but somehow came out of that even stronger and faster than before), while Maul has been constantly fighting the highest-tiered enemies during SOD. 2.) "Ahsoka was trained by Anakin, the strongest Jedi duelist". - Yep and Maul was trained by Sidious, who is far more experienced in the force and would wipe the floor with Anakin during ROTS. - Also do I even need to explain how Yoda is a stronger duelist than Anakin? The evidence should be obvious. 3.) Maul has shown better dueling feats - In TCW Maul defeats Savage Oppress and Obi Wan on multiple occasions. - In TCW Maul keeps up with Sidious in a very fast, intense duel. He even lands a kick on him which is impossible for all but the very highest tier characters. - In TCW Ahsoka runs from Grievous, loses to Ventress, and loses to Bariss. - In SOD Maul fights Windu and Aayla Secura at the same time and says "Now this is a fair fight." He holds his ground and the battle is a stand-still. He also fights Dooku to a stand-still and defeats Grievous. 4.) "Maul lost because of his arrogance" - This "trait" of Maul's is unrealistic and has been a long-standing writers tool (a.k.a. emergency option) to remove him from fights. In every fight he's lost, Maul pushed the much weaker hero into an impossible situation, but then for the hero's benefit, he will suddenly turn dumb for a few seconds and allow the hero to pull an outrageous maneuver that even a youngling could counter. He is the only character that gets this repetitive treatment, and to me that is cheap and makes all his fights predictable. If you make a grave mistake in life will you do it again? And again? And again? Obviously not. Because we all have a basic learning ability. But Maul is robbed of that competence and is never allowed to do anything like a Sith Lord. That is why we expected Ahsoka to win no matter what, because Maul's writing will cripple him. 5.) Ahsoka has the Strongest Plot Armor - The best evidence to see how strong Ahsoka's plot armor is is to watch Rebels. She actually lands hits on Vader of all people (f**king what?) and Filoni introduced time travel to save her. Freaking TIME TRAVEL. He literally tore the very fabric of time and space in Star Wars to prevent her from losing. If that's not the ultimate plot armor then I don't know what is.

@jasonsinn9237 4 жыл бұрын
@@willnotez6976 Manhandling an Inquisitor and being stronger than Kanan and Ezra aren't very impressive feats. First off with the Inquisitors - Sidious specifically says in the canon Darth Vader comics that they were limiting the training of the Inquisitors to keep them less powerful, and that definitely showed when Kanan killed the Grand Inquisitor (the strongest one) while only being at the relative level of an initiated Knight. As for Kanan and Ezra - Kanan is a washed up Jedi who doesn't have nearly enough experience or classical training to be anywhere near a master's level, and Ezra is his Padawan and even weaker. Is Ezra strong in the force? Yes. But it never fully blooms into anything beyond Knight level. The fact is, beating those characters is easy and nowhere near the same league as standing up to Vader. They are tiny mole hills compared to a giant mountain. Ahsoka has had no access to Jedi Master training and has only fought Inquisitors since Order 66 while Vader is the Chosen One, has been trained by Sidious, and has been slaughtering Jedi Masters in the comics for years. To make her at his level makes no sense and shows just how blatant the favoritism for her really is. Add the time travel element I mentioned and she has plot armor to the highest degree.

@@willnotez6976 Again, saying Ahsoka's stronger than Ezra and Kanan isn't a good way to compare her against Vader. That's like saying since she can defeat a lvl 10 character then she can beat a lvl 100. She was Anakin's apprentice for 3 years (where she fought mostly droids and barely got into any duels) and when she fought him as Vader it was 14 years later. TreeWop is right Vader had a massively different fight style by then and he had mastered every form of lightsaber combat (confirmed in the comics). Again, Ahsoka fought 1 or 2 Inquisitors during those 14 years while Vader had killed dozens of Jedi Masters and was being trained by Sidious. By actual feats and facts, Vader should be leagues above Ahsoka. I think you're underestimating just how powerful Vader is supposed to be. He's the chosen one, one of the strongest Sith in history and just barely below Sidious. By the time of Rebels he's supposed to be a walking army that can only be defeated by Sidious and possibly Yoda. Sure Ahsoka could have trained to become a master, but simply being a master is not a threat to Vader. You'd have to be far beyond that in the highest tier possible.

Maul appears to have been holding back, as indicated by his desire to bring Ahsoka to his side, and could be inferred to hold a decisive advantage in skill and power, enough to comfortably defeat Tano had he been going all out. Ahsoka isn't solely an Ataru user, and has proficiency with Form V, Shien/Djem So, having been trained by Anakin (who mastered the form) and frequently employing a reserve grip emblematic of Shien. Her style isn't solely Ataru, and would most likely have Form V influences (primarily around counterattacking and bolstering her defensive efforts) as a supplement. She still uses Ataru as a primary form as indicated by her integration of hand-to-hand combat, acrobatic fighting style etc. She also employs Jar'Kai (most likely the Ataru variant of it). Maul's use of Juyo, while providing considerable offensive output in an unpredictable manner, would leave him open to counters and create a weak defense.

Everyone seems to think Maul had a chance to kill Ahsoka and let her live for a second which caused Ahsoka to be able to make him fall but I don't see how the same events wouldn't occur if he hadn't paused, when he decided on continuing his attempt to kill Ahsoka once she declined to join him he did exactly what he would have done just after a brief pause. Sure Maul gave her time to think but I don't think that gives conclusive evidence that the same ending wouldn't have occurred if he hadn't paused. As such Ahsoka wins because well, she won. Maul's captured and she is free and alive; without outside interference until he was already defeated.

I love the name of this episode. On the surface level, "The Phantom Apprentice" is clearly a nod to "The Phantom Menace" where Darth Maul initially appeared on screen. However the name ACTUALLY has THREE separate meanings. Much like how the Phantom Menace represents Darth Maul as this hidden figure that finally unveils himself for real at the end of the movie, but it most importantly represents Darth Sidious, controlling everything in the background. The Phantom Apprentice applies to more than that though. It directly correlates with Maul, as he was the previous Apprentice to Sidious and was "Cast aside and forgotten" and he is struggling to find peace with having been replaced. It also directly correlates with Ahsoka Tano who was the previous Apprentice of Anakin Skywalker but after becoming disavowed by the Council and losing a large part of her life and who she was, she now finds herself helping the republic and council that pushed her aside. But most importantly, the underlying "Phantom Apprentice" is Anakin Skywalker, having been grown and bred in the shadows as the new Apprentice for Palpatine. Both of their previous masters now joining together. IT CONNECTS the world and characters so fucking well. The lightsaber duel has some fucking awesome moments and is action packed with good banter(something you dont get in the movies.) However, the Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Maul fight on Tatooine where Maul finally dies in my opinion is THE best star wars duel in the entire series(And I'm not a fan of Rebels) I think the way it is staged is perfect. It's short and bittersweet, signifying how much both duelists know about one anothers skill, and the amount of time either of them have prepared to defeat one another. Maul gets into his normal stance, and then Obi-Wan gets into his two finger point stance. Maul changes his foot position, signifying he has a plan of attack ready for that style. It isnt until he changes to the stance that his master Qui-Gon Jin uses that Maul changes his foot position once again. Maul has killed someone with this stance before, and he will do it again. Maul proceeds to use the Exact same maneuver that he used to kill Qui-Gon Jin, but Obi-Wan and the Lightside were ready for such arrogance, and so he is able to perfectly counter each strike, and then finally ending Maul's life once and for all. Their feud has thus ended the same way it began. Both revolving a boy from tatooine who will bring Balance to the Force.

Great episode but There’s no consistency with Darth Maul I lOVED the episode as a whole but does anyone agree w me when I say that there is ZERO consistency with Maul and his power level when Filoni writes him. I think it’s due to one of two things which I’ll get to. The Lack of consistency I’m referring to w Maul being that in the episode Maul while sitting down on his throne effortlessly flicked away multiple blaster bolts with a single FINGER then choked Bo Katan making him seem so powerful and so badass then he looses in such a crazy stupid way to Ashoka. No one in the Jedi order besides Yoda, Mace Windu and Anakin (by the time of ROTS) should be able to give Maul any trouble at all whatsoever and he gets kicked by her twice and Elbowed to the face and yes he kicked and elbowed her but they were shown as very even the whole time which makes no sense....Then he disarmed her at the end and made a move PAINFULLY akin to the laughable way he lost to Kanan in rebels when Ashoka was disarmed. She had no lightsaber and Maul could have just SO EASILY pushed her off the ledge with the force or done so many other things instead because of plot armor for Ashoka he lunges forward in the most uncoordinated stupid way possible and nearly falls to his death. We’re talking about Darth Maul. The same guy who stalemated SIDIOUS in a lightsaber duel. It’s ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. And then Ashokas line about not lasting long against anakin.. the disrespect from Filoni towards Maul is just insane sometimes. But u have to remember he favors Ashoka a lot and is crazy biased toward her so if she’s fighting someone who’s ur fav character they are gonna get nerfed hard for the fight. Lol remember when Filoni had Ashoka fight Grievous almost equally in season 5..... Grievous the guy who in legends would completely overwhelm Jedi masters and was a Jedi killer... this is a perfect example of what I’m talking about- Filoni nerfing a character so they can go against Ashoka. Also I feel like Im prob the only person who will say this but I didn’t think the motion capture was necessary at all for the lightsaber duel. Mauls dueling was SO SLOW. So fucking slow. Oh my god it was painful to watch it looks like he had never held a lightsaber before....Look at him vs obi wan in phantom menace or against Sidious on mandalor in clone wars season 5 look at the speed and power and ferocity he fights with it’s simply not there at all. My only explanation other than Filoni being extremely inconsistent when writing maul as well as having unbelievable bias for Ashoka is that Maul was holding back and meant to be captured cause he said to Ashoka in Rebels “running away again Lady Tano?” So perhaps there’s another biased fight in store... Just to note something Maul also looked bored in the duel and wasn’t bloodlusted at all and yes was asking Ashoka to join him constantly and she wouldn’t have lasted 5 seconds if he wanted to kill her but it still should not have gone the way it did at all but whatever that’s what Filoni wanted to do so Alr.

@weeaboo-warrior 4 жыл бұрын
I agree that Filoni has disrespected Maul a lot and has shown a lot of bias towards Ahsoka, but I disagree with the part about the saber fighting being slow. Visually I thought the fight was great. However Maul shouldn't have had much trouble. Bo and Rex should have been helping Ahsoka the entire time. Then it would have still been epic, if not more so, and made sense.

This is the first clone wars lightsaber duel that was dramatically slowed down. The animations of the swings and strikes are much more clearly choreographed and intentional. This allows the audience to see the duel in a much more realistic sense which is incredible. In the past, clone wars duels were always fast and twitchy. While entertaining as they were they felt very unrealistic and essentially that’s how I see a non force user would interpret lightsaber duels if they ever saw one. The magic of this duel is it’s realism and it’s beautiful 😍

Another interesting point of the duel is the idea that it's happening at the same time as Mace's confrontation with Sidious. I wanted to see Maul the victor, but felt they gave it to Ashoka. I feel Maul definitely lost cause a younger, less experienced light saber dualist criticized him in the middle, sent him out a window, stopped him after losing her sabers, and got him captured. The criticism was say her master could easily beat him. It was also more clear she didn’t want to kill him where it wasn’t clear to me he wasn’t trying to kill her. A dark side user like Maul might prefer gaining an apprentice over death but definitely would hold back from killing. Certainly it was close, but I felt Maul should be better with a lightsaber as he is older, more experienced, and worked hard for this moment. I mean he set this whole thing up with the original intent of fighting Obi Wan and Skywalker, the best of the best of the Jedi (on the battlefield, as Yoda and Mace don’t go out as much.) I feel he may underestimate meeting those two, but certainly not to an extreme level, he would be training to fight both of them. He also killed Qui Gon Jin a long time ago and should have gotten better since then. Ashoka may be the equivalent of a Jedi Knight now cause she leads a Clone force, but she is still young and not actually a Jedi. Her fake equivalent promotion is based on War time need. Ashoka is basically still a padawan who was close but should have done a tiny bit more training if she even stayed a Jedi. Being removed may have given her a better education in life over all, but not specifically laser sword play. I am not in favor of a dark side user, but feel Maul should have earned the victory, but he did not. Maul lost.

Everyone claiming “Ahsoka has plot armor”: MAUL IS IN REBELS TOO, so he has “plot armor” lol. My personal opinion is that yes, Maul has more experience, so it makes sense for him to be stronger and more powerful than Ahsoka. However, Ahsoka was trained by The Chosen One himself, along with help from Obi-Wan, Plo Koon, and other Jedi since she worked with so many. Her agility is one of her best features, which allowed her to be on par with Vader. Yeah, Maul disarmed her in the end, but he “disarmed” Obi-Wan in TPM, and Obi-Wan still won, so how is this any different? It’s not, it’s the same 😂 I’m not saying “Ahsoka’s better than Maul.” While I favor Ahsoka more, Maul has certain strengths and Ahsoka had hers; Maul was using a dual bladed saber rather than a single blade with more freedom of range and mobility. There’s many aspects to this duel. I absolutely love it. Both amazing characters had such an amazing fight. My personal opinion is that Ahsoka won in the end since Maul got overconfident as usual, but I don’t want to necessarily say Maul “lost”.

One thing that I find odd about this duel is how Ahsoka makes no use of reverse hand-grip Shien. Bare in mind, she started off as an Ataru/Shien mix practitioner, weaving Jar'Kai into the mix later on. Even in Rebels she made use of the reverse grip, though her style shifted more into Niman by that time, so why this change ? I have a feeling someone in the writing process forgot Ahsoka was the postergirl of reverse-grip Shien in the Disney canon.
@amransom26
@amransom26 4 жыл бұрын
What? She used the reverse grip multiple times in this battle. Not easy to keep that up with someone as physically strong as Maul, blocking his strikes with a reverse grip could literally break her wrist. Even then, she still used the reverse grip plenty of times in this fight. In the beginning of the clone wars she used it almost exclusively, but towards the end, as she got older, she mixed it up with the standard grip that Anakin was pushing her to use.

I've been doing swordfighting for years now, mainly foam swords (not a LARPer, just use foam weapons since they're cheaper to get and maintain and not lethal so we can actually fight without worrying about hurting someone). I really appreciate what they did with these duels. Especially that they seem so accurate about how a real swordfight would happen while also factoring in lightsabers and the Force. At one point I think I see Maul do a subtle feint low and go high and I just pictured one fight where someone did the same thing to me with a staff-like weapon. These were fantastic fights to watch. I personally think Maul is the slight winner here. But it was pretty damn close.

I think I have to default to motivation and intention; Maul demonstrated with the blaster how easy such deflections was to him yet when dueling Ahsoka it still felt like he was holding back. To me it felt like Vader versus Luke on Bespin, I think Maul was studying Ahsoka; weighing/measuring her abilities to see if she was strong enough to help him take on Sidious. Given his ability to sense the Dark Side of the Force and know what was going to happen I say Maul either lost intentionally or didn't care about being victorious- thus perhaps giving him another chance of encountering Anakin and Kenobi before it was too late. Maul knew he would never stand trial- the throw back to Kenobi and Dooku was nice touch too- even felt/sounded like Maul was realizing that Dooku and he were of the same mind (a side note to that was Dooku reached out to Kenobi...). Though Maul hated Kenobi he hated Sidious more; so I conclude that if Maul really wanted Ahsoka dead the duel would have been short.
