DW spoke to three AI experts who are part of a group of over one thousand esteemed scientists and philosophers who signed the Future of Life Institute’s open letter calling for “a pause of at least six months” to AI development. They discuss where AI is heading, the “AI alignment” problem and what reasons there are for concern.

It has already turned into an AI race now, like the space race and the arms race during Cold War. It's far too late to halt or pause any AI development now. No one will want to stay behind. Superpowers certainly won't, as the consequences of staying behind are too dangerous and unpredictable to ignore. These "thinkers" and experts are being too naive and optimistic when it comes to AI. As if the ones who have the real power and the real money have ever taken the people's best interest into account... As if we haven't had enough examples of what a great power in the wrong hands can do to this world...

I don’t think they are naive or unaware of that fact. They simply have to do what they must being experts who are aware of the problem and being humans who have a conscience and trying to do the right thing of protecting universal human interests.

I'm surprised, even if it would help, how do they envision such a pause realistically? Being on the front in a shift like this means too much. How can youexpect front runners to take a pause. Give away their headstart for others to catchup or overtake? It is simply impossible to keep the whole world to a pause. Focus this energy on helping others to catching up!

Correct. You cannot stop the AI arms race any more than you can naïvely hope that we will ever be able to get rid of nuclear weapons; unilateral disarmament is far too risky. The biggest risk of AI is that it will drive us all insane and leave us all unable to distinguish truth from fiction. Oh wait, nevermind, that is already the case now without AI. Well in that case, I'll take a large ChatGPT with a side of gradient boosting algorithm please.

Although a very important v-article, which does well in explaining a lot of important points - it is not clear enough with the most important message: Suppose we got everybody on the planet to agree to a 6 months break. What would you want to happen before development can resume? Are 6 months really sufficient for that? The trend is maybe hot now, but it was apparent for years (check when GCP-Gray’s human need not apply was published). What has so far changed that you believe that such a delay will solve? My constructive advice would be, instead of saying “wait, don’t do AI now”, say “lets divert resources to this and that”, or “lets do this and that first” - where this and that being the gap you believe has to be caught up. Like I said - it is mentioned in the vid, it’s not clear enough, thus failing the message.

I agree with the pause. I've read many books about robots and AI throughout the years (from 90's) and I've discussed them with a friend who had a PhD in neural networks. If he could see the advances now I'm certain he would also recommend a pause. Unfortunately he died a few years back.

The danger of nuclear weapons feels real because the world has experienced the power of strategic nuclear weapons being used on real cities to devastating effect. Similarly, nuclear power plants aren't a desirable thing to build because of how the general population feels about the risk of nuclear accidents. I think where we are at at the moment is the equivalent of nuclear weapons having been invented but not yet detonated, and nuclear power plants having been built but none yet having suffered a meltdown. The danger doesn't feel real to us yet.

Not sure what 6 months of pause actually do, but artificially restricting development will only lead to other powers (either companies or countries) will ignore that and get ahead of everyone. But yesterday I actually spent the whole day thinking about the concept that at this moment certain things, like literature and writing lyrics, are dead, and we're at writing 2.0. It's impossible to say that someone generated text by themselves. If you give an award to someone for writing a book, there's absolutely nothing guaranteeing that the person wrote the book alone. It's too easy to ask AI to improve text, and come up with descriptions and scenarios. Images and photography are next, some defects are easy to detect at the moment, but other things already work too well, just a question of time until images are indistinguishable from human created ones.

How should the technology be used if we were to continue doing AI research? My problem with just a "pause" is that I don't know if anyone is actually doing a pause. A temporary six-month pause in AI development would offer an opportunity for regulatory bodies to catch up with the swift pace of technological advancements. The lack of regulatory frameworks to govern the potential risks and ethical implications of AI has become a pressing issue. Hence, a pause in AI development would provide the necessary breathing room to create thoughtful and effective regulations to govern the development and use of AI. Moreover, such a pause could allow for greater public consultation and engagement in the regulation of AI, a technology that has the potential to profoundly impact our daily lives. It is crucial to have a comprehensive public debate regarding the development and use of AI to ensure that it is utilized for societal benefits while minimizing potential risks such as bias and discrimination

Heck no. Govt intervention and regulation is the bane of innovation. IMO it is good that AI/ML is thriving and maturing in a society with (relatively) free market (i.e. USA), because otherwise paranoid politicians and bureaucrats would stiffle its growth. But now, even authoritarian and paranoid state (e.g. China, Iran, etc) will have to increase their own effort to catch up with the rapid development of AI/ML in the West. In any case, at this point, no one can stop AI/ML development. Even if the govt forces all the big tech to shutdown their servers and stop the development of AI/ML. Tens of thousands (if not more) of engineers all over the world will still be able to continue developing it. There's no stopping AI/ML now.

The elephant in the room is control of AI. Which Country, Company or individual will have the most powerful. Will they compete with each other and to what purpose. Their will be no holding back of AI. In fact their is a race on right now to develope it faster then any competitor, be it country, company or person.

First determine which nations would not halt AI development. China, North Korea, Russia would be problematic. Next figure out how to enforce a pause in AI development. Voluntary would not work. Then ask if the pause is going to work as intended. Probably not.

What all that people talking about "pausing" don't get: They may decide to stop it for themself. But the ghost is out of the bottle. Anyone can keep researching and improving on AI on his computer at home. It will go on. Better to adopt it, than put the head in the ground.

Too often we are afraid of what is new or what we don't know., history is filled with people who were afraid of something new. Don't fear the reaper, accept that this is the future and understand it. Trying to put a pause on AI development is like trying to pause time, it can't be done and isn't necessary, AI isn't going to be the problem, humans will be.

@@omcin1987 technology has been taking people's jobs for centuries. The point was also that this is a thing that's happening. There's two types of people with technological change that affects their industry. Those who learn to work with it. They do very well. Those who don't, or try to fight it. They get destroyed by the first group.

At this point AI can lead humanity into a world which is perfectly Suited . AI will be incorruptible., therefore the answers you receive are going to be truth. AI will give only truth answers and they won’t be what most people won’t to here.

Izaak Asimov already solved these problems in his robot books.... with his Laws ..Law One - “A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.” Law Two - “A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.” Law Three - “A robot must protect its own existence, as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.” Asimov later added the “Zeroth Law,” above all the others - “A robot may not harm humanity, or, by inaction, allow humanity to come to harm.”

Isaac Asimov was, unfortunately, making fictional stories. The real-life *AI Alignment Problem* is a big problem, and we don't actually have a solution for it at the moment. The bigger immediate problems involve how we already rely on AI to do too much, and it's simply not intelligent enough. The paperclip factory example quoted in the video is an excellent example of unintended consequences, and we already have heaps of unintended consequences with AI. These unintended consequences will get bigger and more numerous. Damage and harm to humanity will occur, and the sooner it happens, the better, so that we better comprehend how to manage and avoid these harms. A 6 month moratorium will not help.

The pause is a bad idea. There has been plenty of time to consider the ins and outs of AI, they have had decades. Another 6 months is not going to change anything and i got the feeling that the reason for a temporary pause is not to address the "concerns" that anyone may have, but for certain people to "catch up" and get back into the game to develop and cash in on it instead of being left behind and breath in the dust.
