There is a significant correlation between James' Yeahs and Bob Rock producing the respective album. One can assume Bob either encouraged it or was the only Metallica producer who didn't try to stop it. It was just a temporary thing until James learned to become self-confident, and practiced like a motherfucker to be a decent rythm guitar player, within a few months. When Dave joined the band, James was still trying to find his place. I think James and Lars just wanted a pretext to kick Dave out of the band. The drinking episodes were what they needed. They used Dave as a teacher, and when his job was done, they fired him. Dave was never meant to be a full time member. He is a natural born leader, and Metallica is James and Lars' property.

Anthrax and Slayer were both pretty impressive back then too. And you haven't really experienced Iron Maiden until you've seen them live. They are better live than on recording.
