I super appreciate how well this is all designed. "Programmer art" is usually the barest of bare minimum, purely functional, and generally looks shitty. This is the total opposite. There's all these small details that make it look so polished. -Subtle drop shadows under text. -The "Stroke #" being offset vertically from the oval under it. -The scorecard having the opacity dropped for the "Hole #" row, which separates it from the opaque row below it. - The "Hole #/Par #" in the top left has a light gradient towards the middle of the screen - All the horizontal white separating lines, being squared off on the left, rounded on the right, with a dot off the rounded edge. -Droplet particle effect, and ripple when the ball entered the water -The club heads have lines on the faces, and there's no reason the back of the putter had to be modeled that well. -Hell, the WHOLE ASS course environment itself is awesome. The craziest thing to me is that the entire aesthetic meshes together, nothing is outta place and it's all coherent design. To have that be for the demonstration of some procedural animation is bonkers. Good shit dude.

I noticed that the distances seemed off when I made this. AI when ball is inches away from hole: _punts the thing into the ocean_
@cchhey38129 ай бұрын
Every not accounted for penalty during the game. 3:37 A Double hit: if an accident it doesn't count as a penalty but after watching closely you can see the AI turned to hit the ball twice. 7:22 Out of bounds: even if it's done on purpose, hitting the ball into the water would still count as an out of bounds shot. 9:20 miss: even if you miss the ball, it counts as a hit and adds to your score (not a penalty but the extra point weren't given). True score: +15
@bitblit9 ай бұрын
I disagree with the misses. The AI does not look like it's missing the ball, just that it is feeling out the stroke. If it weren't for the fact that it was falling over each time it would look like it never made the attempt to swing.
@jubuttib9 ай бұрын
"A Double hit: if an accident it doesn't count as a penalty" Man what kind of pussyfooting has golf become? It's a damn +1 whether you intended or not, damnit! =) (Yes I know the rules were relaxed recently...) "7:22 Out of bounds: even if it's done on purpose, hitting the ball into the water would still count as an out of bounds shot." Water is almost never an out of bounds, but either a normal or a lateral water hazard. You don't get an automatic penalty either, because you're allowed to play the ball as it lies in the hazard (sometimes it's not actually IN water, but still within the marked area), or even wade in and hit it from an underwater lie (local rules might prohibit this one though). It's only if you decide to take a drop that you get a +1, and you never lose the distance of the shot, unlike with an OB. Treating it as an out of bounds here, instead of dropping the ball where it crossed the water hazard line, is a weird local rule for this game to have. EDIT: Only times I've seen water marked as OB has been when there's something behind the water that they REALLY REALLY don't want you to hit, i.e. to try to dissuade you from even hitting in that direction. "miss: even if you miss the ball, it counts as a hit and adds to your score (not a penalty but the extra point weren't given)." Comes down to intent, if you intended to hit, but missed, it's a stroke, if you didn't intend to it's not. So if you for example start a swing, but on your downswing try to stop or alter the course of the club to abort the shot, and manage to miss the ball, it's not counted as a stroke. That last one is a bit contested, but I've seen it held up many times even during competition. Not a huge fan of it personally though, like with the double touch rule change.

So, I wanted to give a minor analysis of the AI as someone with some experience with Golf (albeit only virtually). I don't want to rag on the fact that you can only set power with the wedge and putter but it's fairly plain that a lot of times, you need to swing below the proper range of the club in order to hit your intended target. In real golf, you can easily club up or down to make it always a power swing, but in this simplified setting a power bar probably would've helped. With the way the ragdoll chips and putts, I can understand not wanting the extra training burden for even less payoff. I can understand how frustrating that shot at 7:04 lipping out must feel, but this is where I have to give massive kudos. That was an A-grade shot since you're still within tap-in distance of the hole, it only really feels so bad because you were already shooting over par and getting that chip in would've saved it. Long putts and close approaches that attack the pin are considered successful if you can get within 6 ft of the hole, amazing within 3 ft, and of course perfect if it goes in.
