One of the keys to understanding aikido is to put a melee weapon into their hands both the attacker and the aikido defender. They are practicing the movements without any weapons because the aikido movements are the same with or without weapons.

This video doesn't show that there is a subtle joint lock involved in this throw. If she extends qi through her arm and grips the attacker's wrist with qi and raises her tegatana or "hand sword" in an upward arc she can actually force the attacker to lose balance and walk painfully behind her. This technique was one of my favorite to demonstrate when I was avidly practicing years ago: Hanmi handachi katetetori shihonage. Aikido has many "secret handshakes" or subtle, almost invisible joint locks.

Not a fan of aikido, doesn't really work in the real world, it's more of a dance than an actual self defence. I did it for a few years and never could use any of the techniques at work (security). Switched to judo and after only 12 months I was using throws and sweeps effectively at work.
