the hebrew dialogue at 06:35 strengthens my point. Instructor admonishes the uke for trying your suggestion and nearly breaking his neck. He says to the uke that the only reason he partly succeeded is that the instrctor felt the mistake and aborted the lock to let the uke reach the ground safely. You can not outrun an armlock like this because the trajectory is downward and not to the front. You only apply a frontal directing lever if you want to ballistically break the joint.

AKBAN This is true, and one can see how the instructor allowed the uke to escape on purpose in order to allow him to stay unharmed.

i agree, if there is resistance from uke then it will greatly increase the stress applied to his body. barring ballistic joint manipulation, it seems all uke has to do to neutralize any danger to his elbow is move forward faster that tori can move backwards. a higher degree of speed and agility can be achieved moving forward than any other direction- advantage uke. so when tori begins to sit down all uke need do is leap forward and circle out of it. the white belt at 6:35 does this shabbily.

Moderator here, Arm locks can be for control or for breaking up the joints. There is ample control in Te Makura. In the northern dojo a resisting opponent caused himself a broken elbow by resisting this technique

The founder of Aikido Ueshiba Sensei studied under Takamatsu Sensei the 33 Grandmaster of Togakure Ninjutsu so its no wonder you see the similarity of the throws, I think its more accurate however to say ninjutsu principles in aikido since Ninjutsu came first and influenced Ueshiba and his Aikido system

during te makura, what if you are doing this to someone with strong arms and he posts up with his free hand as you sit down? or if the dude is flexible and jumps forward with both feet and balls himself up to put weight on your chest as you sit down? this technique seems a little sketchy for 1v1 combat because there are several points during the demonstration where control of the opponents is absent. once arm control is gained why not just a simple osoto gari or uchi makikomi?

Do these work againt a resisting attacker?

The first variation of Shizen Kata will work against a resisting opponent easily. The Last two techniques necessitate timing

Basic waza's in taijutsu and traditional jujutsu should always be complemented with an opening , that opening can be either achieved by delivering an Atemi ( either a distractive blow or a solid devastating one) to create that gap/loosening of grip or tightening of muscle to apply the choke or joint lock/throw , the other way requires great insight and overall understanding of balance, footwork, and environment and as sensei sheriff has put below boils down to bridging and timing.....but from a realistic prespective and as per my humble experince ( a solid punch will always pave the way to a smoother application of a lock/choke or takedown) striking is vital in martial arts even in softer ( joint/manipulation forms)

lol, a good way to test the effectiveness of your elbow and shoulder manipulation techniques is to play a little ne waza with some over conditioned wrestlers from time to time. i play judo mostly and some of the most pain in the ass newaza sessions have been with wrestlers just for the insane amount of tortuous conditioning they put themselves through. sometimes i don't even attempt an armbar because they're too strong and i would just be wasting energy.
