I've watched a lot of Aikido videos on KZbin and read a lot of comments, and I've come to the conclusion that unfortunately there's really just not a lot of great ambassadors of Aikido out there. Not a lot of people really know the history behind Aikido, nor the philosophy behind it, and it seems that not a lot of people even practice it all that martially. That makes it a shame, because it really is a powerful martial art when done properly. And I wish the world could see that.

Like every art how training is actually conducted is critical. Too many martial arts classes are about flash but no substance. For instance in 1 of my classes,fellow student told me to effectively lie down. Now with MA,there is risk in volved which in itself is a lesson. So when people resist application of the technique that risk increases however on flip size(pun intented ) some people just flop on command before evasion has even occured never mind the application.

People... people. First of all, everyone should know that in the martial arts world, it is NOT a topic for comparison. All martial arts are useful and effective. However, the usefulness and effectiveness depends on the person practicing it. If the student do not have the correct set of mind in training, any martial art won't be a meaningful one for him/her. There are a alot of arguements between MMA and Aikido. UFC is all contact SPORTS and for entertainment. MMA consists on different martial arts with different philosophy and teaching. YES, I agree it is somewhat more practical in the real world. This is because it is a teaching of total contact to take down straight. AIKIDO teaches Peace and Harmony, it teaches us to control our inner self. If we are able to save someone (vid above), we will do it. The principle of Aikido- balance of our Yin and Yang. As an Aikido practitioner for about 8 yrs, I came to realised that if we are able to blend in our force with the opponent, that is creating a perfect "circle". In Aikido, the locks on the joints are really painful. MMA do not allow all these small painful locks on the joint that makes them tap out easily... Like I mentioned above that Aikido teaches PEACE and HARMONY. So why would anyone argue that Aikido should versus MMA?? Aikidoka dont challenge MMA fighters doesn't means that it is weak, it means they are able to control their mindset

+jackie goh As far as I'm concerned, as an Aikidoka myself, if an Aikidoka is not able to fight, that is a weakness in his training. Aikido is, first and foremost, a _martial_ art, and is meant to neutralize attackers. If you want to get all Shinto about it, fine, but recognize the other side of it as well.
@MrMolodiec6 жыл бұрын
You say, Aikido teaches peace&harmony. Ok. But it Does Not teaches how to fight. So, it is Not a martial art but some kind of yoga. And let it be.
@noahbryson21226 жыл бұрын
Aikido is not yoga dipshit and don't talk about a martial art like that if you were a a good martial artest you wouldn't talk about aikido like that
@remoxvideo24955 жыл бұрын
It is simple. If you are trying to use Aikido vs casual agressive mma fighter 9/10 it won't be effective in self defence because using Aikido doesn't mean to go for extreme technical Aikido position and trying to response on enemy attack in 50% or more disadvantage of you reacting to attacks. Same goes with wing chun etc. But if you stun your opponent by hitting him or controling the distance and not allowing him to create more momentum towards you by closing the gap and make him unable to rush you with punches then you can apply it. So dojo techniques and street applies are way more different and should be trained separately imo.

Well done guys! For me, it’s cool to see someone put to film the actual practical applications of Aikido. From the outside in it does look SO fake and bullshity. “Why they be always grabing my sword hand? Who does that?! How come they throw such wide punches”. All of that is quite adaptable and that’s just how we train..for trainig. Also, there are never any pretty flips on the street like you see in the dojo (just quickly broken stuff) and I think you did a pretty restrained job on this choreography. The cut back to the POV dojo was a nice touch.

***** :) that is not what I meant and you know it. Seagal started as a promoter of Aikido (and might owe his entire career to this martial art), but these past years his productions have little to no Aikido at all. It's mostly cheap Kung Fu.

@kakridge199710 жыл бұрын
To say Aikido is defensive implies that it is reactionary. We are trained to hunt down the attackers. I see Aikido as restoring harmony to the ripples caused by the attackers. The attackers on the ground lying still is the harmonious calm being restored.
@2Short2Get10 жыл бұрын
***** I am not questioning the Aikido technique of Steven Seagal, but I can barely see Aikido in his latest movies. I've had the pleasure of practicing Aikido under the guidance of many Shihans: Fujita Sensei, Kobayashi Sensei, Christian Tissier Sensei and even Doshu Moriteru Ueshiba at Hombu Dojo. These are the people that modelled my practice of classical Aikido. When I look at the movies of Steven Seagal, I see kicks in the groints, punches in the face and lots of blocks, contrary to the flow of Aikido. And if you ever get the chance, you should also ask the opinion of the stuntmen. You'd be amazed.
@shogun563810 жыл бұрын
well yeah thing is you see with steven seagal if you look at his background of aikido it's a lot different to let's say dojo aiki. he does flowing movements in some of his movies and also when he's doing demonstrations you will see various techniques with traditional aikido which he uses and it's that style of aikido in which he cooperates punchers kicks etc type in his aikido read about it tenshin aikido with tomiki - yoshinkan various other aiki budo arts some don't practice that ?

Funny, all of the posts on here that want to bash Aikido as a martial art and for self defense...Yet they forget that Aikido was formed from the actual grappling arts of the Samurai, Aikijutsu, who tested their skills in life or death situations. It is odd, that if Aikido is "Bullshido, that the Tokyo Police Department trains their officers to use Yoshinkan Aikido. It is also odd that the majority of police departments around the world take many of their control techniques from Aikido. Also odd is the fact that military combatives have used various Aikido techniques as well, mixed in with Boxing, Ju-Jitsu and Karate. Yeah, Aikido is just all bunk I guess...Luckily, most Instructors of Aikido don't feel they have anything to prove, and they are more in line to promote peace and harmony with others instead of taking up challenges with those who feel they have something to prove, you know, like they are on an elementary school playground or something. Pretty sad really, that some people never grow up and grow past that phase in their lives. They are the ones who truly need Aikido.

What I have always thought is that it can only be effective if practiced a lot and for a long time. (Most) Aikido techniques would be difficult to do in a real situation. Whereas other martial arts can be effective within shorter time of practice. For example take one person with no prior experience with martial arts and that starts practicing Aikido, and another one that starts practicing Karate. They keep practicing for 1 year. After that, they both get into a fight. Now, who do you think is most likely to win? Me bet is on the karate practitioner. Simply because Aikido techniques take a LONG time to even learn.

I see a lot of negatives comments below. I love aikido. I have trained to 1st dan Aikido and got the equivelent grade in urban self protection in Newton Abbot Devon. . I think the traditional way in which many aikido players train, with no cross training means that they rarely spar against good strikers/ground fighters/mma/combatives students and do not undertsand the differnet ranges of combat -even when standing. Set peices are good for technique and enstalling principles of movement but much of aikido would be modified significantly if aikidoka drilled against a non-compliment attackers especially who are proficent in other arts and wrere given freedom to attack as they pleased today. That being said I have used aikido technique under pressure in combaitves train at USP and know it is fundamental part part of my own tool kit having trained for 12 years.. I think there are two sides to aikido where there is the mind body spirit health benefits of aikido practice, and self protection.. Both are great. People want different things from training. Aikido is about growth and perfection on one level but leaves the reality of combat lacking. Hopefully Aikido will evolve and become less idealistic and more pragmatic in terms self protection.

As usual all the MMA fanboys comment deriding Aikido as it does not work "in the ring". Forgetting however that fighting "in the ring" is a sport, it is a test of skill between two trained (and willing) martial artist. Aikido is not a sport, therefore how can it be expected to work in a sporting environment? The same goes the other way of course, triangle choke someone in the ring and you win. Triangle choke someone outside the chip shop on a Friday night and his mates will stomp your head flat, because MMA is not designed to work outside the ring. What does MMA teach you about dealing with multiple opponents? Nothing. You cannot put something into an environment in which it was never designed to work and then claim it has no use when it fails to work. And no, I don't train Aikido, and yes, I love the UFC.

Lol we are not talking about fighting in the ring, nor we talk about MMA. Any decent fighter will beat up an Aikido masters ass, in ring or on street. Aikido works against ppl who wanna shake your hand. Let a boxer, a Thaiboxer, MMA fighter or just a brawler who goes to the gym fight an Aikidoka on street and the Aikidoka gets his ass beaten up. I thought Aikido was supposed to be painless?
@Ursacke10 жыл бұрын
All Aikido locks can be applied painfully, and we train to understand this. But with proper technique the movements are compelling without being painful, and this is by far the more interesting and challenging aspect of daily practice than just hurting each other. Applied technique (i.e.; what you would use in the street) is -- by it's very nature -- much more chaotic and ugly than you would practice in the dojo. Self-defence with martial-arts is not about executing beautiful techniques, but applying basic martial principles in order to survive encounters, or even better, avoid them entirely. Saying all that, the Aikidoka in this video really know their stuff. The video is well made, exciting, and a lot of fun. I love it!
@ronan_4210 жыл бұрын
Ursacke I practised Aikido for 6 months and at that Dojo they taught that if you're hurting someone or breaking bones, you're doing it wrong. Maybe there are different styles. But that's not really my issue with this video. My issue is that it looks like the message is "learn Aikido and protect damsels in distress".
@vlad_IT_8710 жыл бұрын
Painless? Huh ? xD Well I trained Aikido for 6 years I guess you kinda get used to the pain :'D
@Ursacke10 жыл бұрын
kerricam You're right; a painful technique is not an Aikido technique. A forward roll is not an Aikido technique either, but it helps you develop your understanding of the art. Sorry if my previous post sounded like I was condoning the practice of painful Aikido. As for the story, yes; it gets zero-points for originality (although I'd argue that there are many distressed damsels out there, female or otherwise). But execution counts, and despite the machismo it scores well I think.

It looks painful. But as you can see in the end, everybody is fine and friendly again. ;-)

In reality this girl would get raped, and this guy would be dead. First what you need to do is to call people around, shout for help, call the police. And not enter into the alley alone to face five, six or seven thugs. Maybe first will alone attack you, but then all of them would, and they will crush you. So this video isn't just fake, it is also dangerous for misguiding young people that they are Superman with knowledge of martial art, especially if that art is bullshido.

there is a reason why you dont see aikido in UFC, because its shit
@PrivateEyeYiYi9 жыл бұрын
It's because small joint manipulation is against UFC rules. Lots of moves aren't allowed in UFC, which is why it is shit in the real world.
@raduz1239 жыл бұрын
Think of Aikido almost like a stand up form of grappling, it conists of locks and movment. Many of those locks are small joint locks (band in the UFC) they work by applying a lot of force to a small area. The reason many Aikido practioners jump around in such an exgerated manner is simply because of the dynamics of the move. Simply put your wrist will only bend so far before it snaps and so jumping counters this. Aikiodo can be hard to get but it definitly works, however I think it would work best in conjunction with striking. Which to be fair Ju Jitsu practioners should be doing. (Aikido is a part of Ju Jitsu as is Judo)

put a UFC fighter against an Aikido master, I bet the Aikido master would be destroyed in seconds.
@raduz1239 жыл бұрын
YrielRazik Sounds like you were to excited to shout your opinion and forgot to actually read what I wrote. Also your opinion is without anything contructive so it is vague and basless. Be contructive.
@PrivateEyeYiYi9 жыл бұрын
YrielRazik Let's get real. You're not going to see an Aikido guy in a UFC match, just as you're not going to see a UFC guy in an Aikido dojo (or whatever they call them). Aikido isn't meant for fighting, although it's based on jujitsu techniques. UFC is a sport, and it's not really meant for fighting outside the ring. .On the other hand both are probably applicable to self defence situations.

nice video - keep going - and aikido it is not fake, it is not just offensive like other martial art and it is quite good to defend. I learn aikido because it can teach me the way to maintain my mind calm. If you want to practice brutal martial art choose karatedo or boxing, but you want to maintain your physical strength and mental health practicing aikido is not a bad idea
