Aikido the way of the rogue warrior is a NEW series on how Lenny Sly sensei of the #roguewarriors training compound shows us how aikido can be applied practically. We're premiering this video series with showing you how you can effectively apply the ineffective traditional munetsuki hijinage. Sly sensei covers all aspects and traditional principals of aikido fundamental's. He also demonstrates how to incorporate Tenshin aikido basics to validate the effectiveness of this otherwise non effective traditional aikido waza.

I am a military policeman, in Brazil, in the city of São Paulo and black belt third dan, I have studied aikido since 1994 and have already used it in some real situations and the techniques used in normal training do not really apply when in real stress situations! I have been following the video lessons and learned a lot, trying to absorb the concepts and apply them in my trainings with my students! Thank you for sharing and sharing the precious knowledge !! Domo Arigato Sensei!

I'm just going to leave this out there for general consideration. The "peace and harmony" the samurai were seeking was in preparation for their eminent death. It was NOT the buddhist/zen form of peace and harmony in preparation for helping humanity The samurai where violent men seeking to find the peace within themselves to accept their chosen profession. Was zazen a part of that process? Sure! But it was zazen as preparation for death not zazen in preparation for "helping better humanity" as practiced by buddhist monks. I'm not sure what O Sensei meant people to take away from his AikIdo teachings because I don't think any of his students had progressed to the point where he felt they were worthy to be given that knowledge before his death. This is also a typical problem with training under very traditional Japanese teachers. If you've done that, you understand what I mean. You might have to hang around the dojo for 5 years before you're considered worthy to told "good morning" as the sensei passes by. So.... how long would it take for them to share their personal feelings and phiolosophy with you? Today, Aikido, like every other martial art in America, is a business. You put in the time on the mat, you pay enough in dues and poof, you're a blackbelt. That's not the way these arts were meant to be taught but for some reason Aikido people seem to think an art developed around the military combat techniques used by the samurai was/is supposed to be some kind of partnered moving meditation used to resolve conflict. The second problem with Aikido people is any opinions about "how it doesn't work" seem to evoke hostility but, if your Kung Fu sifu/shifu, or Karate sensei told you launching a flying kick wasn't very effective thing to do..... you wouldn't bat an eye or give it a second thought. The complaining about opinions of technique seems to be unique to Aikido. Just my thoughts. Keep up the good work, Lenny. Edited for grammar, spelling and clarification.

Hell yeah!!! Thank you! Ive never trained Aikido, but huge respect for it. 18 yrs of Muay Thai, boxing, Jujitsu, and a little Silat. I have said a million times to my MMA buddies. "bullshit! There's gotta be a "combat" aspect to Aikido taught somewhere", and if it isnt. Ive also stated, "look at how potentially devastating the techniques of Aikido are!".. What stops me, a striker, from distracting, or feinting, and applying these techs? Point is. Im very happy to see this, and in everyday life. This works. Furthermore, say in Law Enforcement. It gives you OPTIONS.. To control and contain (arrest), or if you must. Damage the attacker. New subscriber. Thx again sir

I have always been fascinated by Aikido, and I have seen black belts do some cool stuff, but even my untrained eye saw a lot of "falling down" for each other and "dancing." I have seen lots of combat aikido videos etc, but nothing like what you are doing. You are down to the nitty gritty and revealed what I always wished Aikido would be! Drive on!!!

Sensei, I greatly admire your ability and the clarity of your demonstrations, via a TenShin, straight ahead, no nonsense reality. My training began in ernest in 1971 (Aikikai), but from 1975-1982, I trained under a mutual (TenShin) acquaintance of ours in Juso, Japan. I've been teaching, independently, since 1993, and therefore, greatly appreciate the value your film clips. But (I've got to air this) the amount of time spent talking, rather than showing, is really frustrating. I value the art of verbal brevity. Like the ink brush painter and haiku poet, expressing the most with the fewest lines is truly an admirable goal. Enough said.

I was 14 in 1974 at a course in Glasgow held by Kazuo Chiba Shihan. (RIP). I always remember him saying that in martial arts, the first blow kills! My first grading to 3rd kyu that year was done by Sensei "Slim" Coyle. His main comment was that Aikido is about fighting and that I needed to toughen up! I really enjoy your videos. It reminds me of the Aikido I learned as a boy. Gracefully rough.

The "way of peace" does NOT mean the art "doesn't hurt"-- if you're defending yoruself - you're GONIG TO HURT the guy-- period!!!! IF you don't hurt them- they're going kill you!!! simple. GET REAL. Really great video Sensei Sly. I have been studying Kenpo at a local school for the last 14 years getting myself, my son and daughter trained up and have always been interested and curious about Aikido. I really appreciate you taking the time to share your knowledge. I am reasonably familiar with the principles of torque and controlling your opponent's center line you demonstrate, and of course the effects of pain. I am going to practice this technique and the "what ifs", you so graciously posted, with my son in my garage "dojo". I am excited to see and feel it be effective. I’ve been in Shorin Ryu for many years and I came across your videos a good while back and have thoroughly enjoyed them. Our style is close quarter defense. I totally agree with so much you say regarding if it works use it. If it doesn’t then transform it. Make it work or discard it. We have some pretty brutal bunkai and also realize some of it needs some revamping due to how a real street punch grab attack etc is really going to happen. My son is about to become a police officer and he’s in the academy now. But he wants to learn from me also so I want what we do to be effective. No waisted movements. It’s all about body shifting timing and accuracy of technique. Trial and error in the dojo garage gym etc. not out there where it’s too late. So I believe you have some great effective stuff here and I’m not an Aikido guy so I can only speak from what I know. I’ve also recently come upon small circle jujitsu so I love our Okinawan katas and our bunkai but I also want to know how to be better if I need to in a street situation which I hope never happens. So PLEASE Keep it up !

This could work for so many different situations in real life. Whether it's a shove to a sucker punch, if the person's arms come at you in any way, you can deflect, smack, and circle around for the arm crank flip. People tend to underestimate how disorienting it can be when you're flipped onto the ground like this. They're wide open to a knee to the face or any number of submissions inflicted by someone in a dominant position. MMA doesn't prepare people for real fights because it's predicated on the notion of a fair 1v1 with no clothes and a ref. In real life, what you want is a fast, effective concrete sandwich with a side of fuck-you to the face. As always, loving your work, Lenny. Hope all is well and the content continues in the future.

I'm nobody and I'm going to go back to shutting up, and lurking, but if you are a newbie, enthusiastic off of Lenny's videos, and deciding to practice the techniques that work, please DO always apply the love peace and harmony aspect TOWARDS YOUR UKE. Apparently in the past there used to be injuries in some dojos with the joint locks and shit, and the most important thing to remember about the techniques which actually work is that SOMETIMES, unskilled non-compliance can result in injury and breakage. When practicing the real shit start off even more gently than you'd "gently" mimic a punch into a motherfucker's face, and go from there; if you're accustomed to traditional shit that can't fucking do anything even if you put your back, butt, balls, legs and dick into it, and you go to change or adapt it to one of these techniques with full force out of nowhere and surprise your uke or just drop it on him even when he knows it's coming, you'd probably be surprised how fast you could lose a friend or get a lawsuit.

Everything is great about that but one lie that some people are saying is "you dont need strenght for aikido" WRONG. Its true if its done in traditional dojo with no resisting but in real world... Of course it works ( its just pain) but if a guy is bigger than you itll be harder to aply the technique on him if you are not strong enough to get him in good position to do that technique. (of course strike like a punch or kick under the belt can also help) But the thing is that YOU NEED STRENGHT FOR ANY MARTIAL ART. (or youll get knocked after getting a single punch in your head)
