I am Karate Black Belt, but as for me karate is more useful for offensive in street fights rather than countering, I am learning Aikido as it is more peaceful, requires less brute strength, and it is good in countering opponents. I personally recommend Aikido.

You guy's are incredible, you are very pro active, positive and deliver content in a very clear and concise manner. Well done. My family and I live in Australia in a regional area with no access to Aikido practitioners, I have three teenage daughters who would benefit greatly from learning the philosophies and techniques that Aikido has to offer, not to mention the cardiovascular benefits. It would be amazing if you guys could offer You Tube classes each week ie Lesson 1 and Lesson 2 that teenage girls the world over could join in and learn how to defend themselves against trouble and learn a philosophy that teaches how to be a better human being regardless of race, religion or social economic status. Thanks again to you and your team, I know how much effort goes into producing something like this, it is an amazing community service, that actually saves lives.

This is a great video. in Aikido we are always concerned about where are we positioning our hands and arms before something nasty happens. Usually the aikidoka is not comfortable with the "kamae" posture practised in the dojo while in a street situation.

What many critics of Aikido don't understand is, all the flowy, impractical stuff they see as bogus tends to involve really smart placement, if trained correctly... in such a way where if you do screw up the rehearsed technique, you're still left in a good position for turning it around with more instinctive, easy striking and more mechanical, jujutsu-like grappling. Still, without developing that, without getting good at not panicking, without knowing how to mix it up... the only good option you're often left with upon losing control of the big, flowwy, formal throw is in that instant, to run away. Still, for a real, non-MMA fight, running away is unmistakably the best self defense you can have, even if you're good at MMA-style fighting. Concealed knives are something Jiujitsukas will always have to look out for on the street, making going to the ground a bad call when there's no referee.

Kokikai, or Ki Society if you can't find Kokikai. There's nothing wrong with Aikikai either, but I'm biased, since I am a Kokikai practitioner. Aikikai is the most popular, so it might be what you're looking for. For me, Kokikai is less technical and more about controlling your opponents posture, etc (we train with resistance, but usually (mostly) without atemi (strikes)) Aikikai, from what I understand, can run the risk of reducing techniques to a series of mechanics, which, for the most part, is not a good thing (except, to learn... it's okay to reduce a technique to a series of mechanics. But to get it to the point where you can do it reliably, it has to be a living, breathing grappling technique, where each throw is a little different than the last (but, follows the same basic outline, if possible)). YMMV with Aikikai and perhaps some are better about that than others. Really, it's probably more about the individual school or instructor moreso than it is about the style.

Azue I am a doorman from Australia and I was just watching this old clip and you said at the first time you got into a trouble you forgot all your training. That does happen . With me, however, I have many many years of training under my belt, and every time I got into a blue. ( blue in Australia is a fight. I don’t know if you know that ) I always get nervous sweat , Adrenaline shot through your body, makes your hands shake. Your opponent sees that and thinks you’re scared and you are , you don’t want to get hurt you don’t wanna lose your front teeth you want to get stabbed but when it starts your training cuts in straight away and you feel totally at ease and you know exactly what you’re doing That’s how I feel anyway. P S I do enjoy watching your clips.

Azu it would be useful to discuss hanmi vs square stance or kamae in general. Looks like you were mostly in square stance. DaitoRyu often moves out of square stance and can be quite effective. My aikido club strongly emphasizes classic hanmi and finding and defining the line. When I've ben attacked (by as many as 6 to one) I've had success leading out of hanmi. One can gently transition to hanmi without appearing provacative. Fred
